    A prospective study was performed of 100 caesarean sections (31 elective, 69 emergency) to determine the incidence of blood splashes to the masks and goggles of surgeons, assistants and scrub nurses. The rate of blood splashes was 40% on surgeons’ masks, 49.29% on surgeons’ goggles, 31% on assistants’ masks, 21.12% on assistants’ goggles, 23.1% on scrub nurses’ masks and 15.71% on scrub nurses’ goggles. The use of masks and protective goggles is strongly recommended to avoid body fluid contamination and acquiring disease in obstetrics.

    Summary. Atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP) concentrations were determined by radioimmunoassay technique in 23 women, 11 women with premenstrual syndrome (PMS) and 12 comparable asymptomatic women. The asymptomatic women showed no change in ANP concentration during the menstrual cycle. In the PMS group ANP levels showed a significant fall in the midluteal phase compared to levels in the follicular phase. Throughout the cycle ANP concentrations were lower in the PMS group than in the comparison group. This difference was statistically significant in the early, mid and late luteal phases of the cycle. The lower ANP concentration in the PMS group in the luteal phases may indicate either a lower plasma volume or a decrease in the total body sodium content or both. These findings are contrary to those expected.

    A total of 50 bread-wheat varieties bred in Pakistan were characterized for the composition of the high-molecular-weight glutenin subunit (HMW-GS). The glutenin subunits, as revealed by sodium dodecyl-sulfate-polyacrylamide-gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE) were numbered according to Payne's numbering system and, varieties were accordingly assigned theoretical quality scores. All varieties were found to possess either subunit 1 or 2* coded by the A genome. Subunits 17+18 and 7 + 9 of the B genome and 5+10 of the D genome were predominantly found in this set of varieties. The frequency of the appearance of Glu-l alleles in the varieties was different from that seen in other countries, especially in terms of the absence of the ‘null’ form of the A genome and the presence of novel subunits at the Glu-Bl and Glu-Dl loci. The compositions of HMW-GS were generally of good quality, with more than 50% of the varieties achieving quality scores of 9–10 with a high (8.6) average score. The results in this study indicate that wheat varieties bred in Pakistan have a narrow genetic base in terms of HMW glutenin subunits. It appears that the breeders have been selecting wheat genotypes of glutenin subunits associated with good quality without knowing the actual composition of these subunits. The database established on the basis of these results is useful for wheat-improvement programmes aimed at varietal identification and breeding for good quality parameters.

    The aim of this study was to examine the performance of anaesthetists while managing simulated anaesthetic crises and to see whether their performance was improved by reviewing their own performances recorded on videotape. Thirty-two subjects from four hospitals were allocated randomly to one of two groups, with each subject completing five simulations in a single session. Individuals in the first group completed five simulations with only a short discussion between each simulation. Those in the second group were allowed to review their own performance on videotape between each of the simulations. Performance was measured by both ‘time to solve the problem’ and mental workload, using anaesthetic chart error as a secondary task. Those trainees exposed to videotape feedback had a shorter median ‘time to solve’ and a smaller decrease in chart error when compared to those not exposed to video feedback. However, the differences were not statistically significant, confirming the difficulties encountered by other groups in designing valid tests of the performance of anaesthetists.

    Diacodexis pakistanensis is the smallest and most primitive artiodactyl. It is Known from the ealry Eocene of the Indo-pakistani subcontinet. It retains a clavicle, has five complete digits in the manus and four in the pes and is digitigrade.The elongated limbs, reduced ability to pronate and supinate, double pulleyed astragalus and reduced lateral digits indicate that D.Pakistanensis is coursorial. However, the shape of the spinous Processes of the sacrum, the size of the deltoid tubercle of the humerus, the shape of the proximal femur. the narrow distal trochlea of the astragalus and proportions of the long bones indicate that it is less cursorial than any other dichobunid artiodactyl.

    Mature and immature tubers of purple nutsedge (Cyperus rotundus L.) chilled at 0°C in dry and wet conditions, were sprouted along with fresh, unchilled tubers over a range of temperatures (10°C-45°C) in light and darkness. Fresh immature tubers showed a high sprouting percentage at all temperatures between 20°C and 40°C, while the mature ones did so only at 30°C and 35°C. Chilling of dry tubers stimulated early sprouting and increased the maximum sprouting percentage of both the mature and immature tubers. Dry chilling also lowered the limit of favourable temperatures to 15°C in the case of mature tubers. Chilling of wet tubers had a depressing effect and no sprouting occurred below 30°C.At all temperatures, light apparently favoured the sprouting of both the mature and immature tubers (except mature wet-chilled ones at 35°C and 40°C). Immature tubers showed relatively higher sprouting percentage than the mature ones, both in light and darkness. Alteration of temperature requirements due to dry and wet chilling of the tubers is regarded as significant and functional in relation to the ecology of the species.

    In Equidae, the limb structure adapted for fore and aft running motion first developed during late Paleocene (Hyracotherium). Since then, almost all the modifications contributed in developing a limb structure in which flexion and extension were primary movements. In Hyracotheriinae and Anchitheriinae, the hip and stifle joints were more flexed and had stronger semitendinosus muscles for fore and aft motion of the limb than in Equinae. Hyracotheriinae and Anchitheriinae had unstable hock joint and had significant intertarsal movement. In Hemphillian and earlier Equinae, the intertarsal movement was considerably reduced and in post Hemphillian Equinae it was negligible because of the presence of strong intertarsal ligaments. In the evolution of the horse the development of intertarsal ligaments, reduction of lateral digits and shortening of the astragalar neck contributed in providing the stability at the hock joint. Four types of limb structures are recognized in Equidae: (1) Hyracotheriinae, (2) Anchitheriinae, (3) Tridactyl Equinae, and (4) Monodactyl Equinae.Monodactyl tendencies appeared for the first time in Hemingfordian Parahippus (reduced metatarsals II and IV and their phalanges). The foot structure of this group is more like Equinae rather than Anchitheriinae, and is considered one of the Equinae in this paper. Early Clarendonian Pliohippus was the first equid to achieve monodactylism, but is not in the directancestry of Equus. Dinohippus became monodactyl at about the same time and has more in common with Equus (skull and dental characters) than Pliohippus.

    A specific and sensitive PCR assay for the detection of Phytophthora infestans, the cause of late blight of potato, in soil and plant tissues was developed. A P. infestans-specific primer pair (INF FW2 and INF REV) was designed by comparing the aligned sequences of rDNA internal transcribed spacer regions of most of the known Phytophthora species. PCR amplification of P. infestans DNA with primers INF FW2 and INF REV generated a 613 bp product, and species specificity was demonstrated against DNA from nine other Phytophthora species and seven potato-blemish pathogens. In a single-round PCR assay, 0·5 pg pure P. infestans DNA was detectable. Sensitivity was increased to 5 fg DNA in a nested PCR assay using Peronsporales-specific-primers in the first round. As few as two sporangia or four zoospores of P. infestans could be detected using the nested assay. Procedures are described for detection of P. infestans in leaves, stem and seed potato tubers before expression of symptoms. A soil assay in which 10 oospores per 0·5 g soil were detectable was developed and validated using samples of field soil. The PCR assay was used to examine the long-term survival of sexual (oospores) and asexual (sporangia and mycelium) inoculum of P. infestans in leaf material buried in a replicated experiment under natural field conditions. Oospores were consistently detected using the PCR assay up to 24 months (total length of the study) after burial in soil, whereas the sporangial inoculum was detected for only 12 months after burial. Sporangial inoculum was shown to be nonviable using a baiting assay, whereas leaf material containing oospores remained viable up to 24 months after burial.
