Strain on the ZnSSe layer is calculated from x-ray and photoluminescence data. The temperature dependence of band-gap energy and the photoluminescence intensity in the Cl-doped ZnCdSe active layers is compared with that of undoped ones. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

Published 1990Staff ViewISSN: 1077-3118Source: AIP Digital ArchiveTopics: PhysicsNotes: Using the refractive index modulation in liquid crystals by an externally applied electric field, we show that common nematic liquid crystals can be used in a Fabry–Perot étalon to produce an electrically tunable optical filter for use in the infrared region. Using commercial liquid crystals we demonstrate that the wavelength can be tuned over 175 nm using less than 10 V. In our first device the free-spectral range of the étalon is about 75 nm with a passband of about 1–2 nm which is determined by the quality of the mirrors that we have used.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

Published 1995Staff ViewISSN: 1077-3118Source: AIP Digital ArchiveTopics: PhysicsNotes: Several CdTe/ZnTe strained single quantum well structures with widths ranging from 5 to 20 A(ring) were grown on GaAs (100) substrates by double-well temperature-gradient vapor-transport deposition. Photoluminescence (PL) measurements on the strained single quantum-well structures showed that the sharp excitonic peaks corresponding to the transitions from the first electronic subband to the first heavy-hole band (E1–HH1) below the critical thickness of the CdTe well were shifted to lower energy with increasing well width. However, the results of the PL spectra above the critical thickness of the CdTe clearly showed broad excitonic peaks, originating from the dislocations in the CdTe quantum well, corresponding to the (E1–HH1) transitions. Electronic subband energies were calculated by an envelope function approximation taking into account the strain effects, and the transition values were in good agreement with those obtained from the experimental measurements. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

Published 1996Staff ViewISSN: 1077-3118Source: AIP Digital ArchiveTopics: PhysicsNotes: A microscopic chemical analysis of BiSrCaCuO (BSCCO) 2212 single crystals was performed with an unprecedented combination of high (submicron) lateral resolution and high energy resolution (100 meV or better). These performances, achieved with imaging synchrotron spectromicroscopy, enabled us to detect in a very small fraction of the investigated specimens, morphological and chemical inhomogeneities. Specifically, we found deviations from stoichiometry in the surface Sr content which have a subtle effect on the chemical environment of at least one other element, Ca. The different chemical environment was found to influence surface chemical reactions. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

Published 1999Staff ViewISSN: 1077-3118Source: AIP Digital ArchiveTopics: PhysicsNotes: A dual-gate-controlled single-electron transistor with coupled dot geometry has been fabricated on a silicon-on-insulator structure. Coupled dots are defined by tunable gates which are designed to separately control the tunneling potential barriers to compensate for disorder due to size fluctuation in quantum dots. The Coulomb-blockade phenomena observed in linear and nonlinear transport regimes were found to be enhanced by the multidot coupling. The Coulomb staircase (nonlinear effect) appears more clearly with the increasing number of coupled dots, indicating definite suppression of the inevitable cotunneling process. In the linear regime, the frequency of Coulomb oscillation was able to be tuned by changing the interdot coupling strength. These results indicate that enhancement of the Coulomb blockade and tunability can be achieved through replacing the traditional single dot by gate-controlled multidots in future single-electron devices. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

Published 2000Staff ViewISSN: 1077-3118Source: AIP Digital ArchiveTopics: PhysicsNotes: We report low-temperature conductance measurement on a Coulomb-blockaded dot in a silicon-on-insulator-based single-electron transistor with in-plane side gates. The linear conductance for 4.2 K at zero magnetic field exhibits up to three paired peaks, indicating simple alternating odd (spin 1/2)-even(spin 0) filling. Three intrapair spacings are found to be nearly a constant value, corresponding to the single charging energy U, whereas two interpair spacings are different which are associated with U+ΔE1 and U+ΔE2, i.e., successive quantized level spacings added to U. The quantized level spacings were also revealed in the nonlinear current staircases. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL:
