    The free-electron-laser (FEL) equations are reduced to a set of one-dimensional, normalized equations that allow a universal (dimensional) analysis. In universal parameters, numerical integration of the FEL equations indicates a relatively constant saturated ponderomotive wave amplitude independent of both the normalized wiggler potential amplitude and the injected signal level. The constant ponderomotive wave amplitude and an empirical fit for the universal saturation length as a function of normalized wiggler potential amplitude and gain permits unnormalized design calculations for saturated power and saturated length over a wide parameter range. Tapering is considered by deriving analytical expressions for the intrinsic efficiency and taper length. Design values for a high-gain, high-efficiency, tapered amplifier at 280 and 560 GHz are presented.

    Sheet electron beams focused by periodically cusped magnetic (PCM) fields are stable against low-frequency velocity-shear instabilities (such as the diocotron mode). This is in contrast to the more familiar unstable behavior in uniform solenoidal magnetic fields. A period-averaged analytic model shows that a PCM-focused beam is stabilized by ponderomotive forces for short PCM periods. Numerical particle simulations for a semi-infinite sheet beam verify this prediction and also indicate diocotron stability for long PCM periods is less constraining than providing for space-charge confinement and trajectory stability in the PCM focusing system. In this article the issue of beam matching and side focusing for sheet beams of finite width is also discussed. A review of past and present theoretical and experimental investigations of sheet-beam transport is presented.

    The combustion rate of premixed gases in a closed vessel was increased by injecting a high-current electron beam into the gas mixture within about 20 ms of spark ignition. This effect was observed with the fuels ethylene, methane, ethane, propane, and n-butane. Experimental results provide strong evidence that e-beam excitation of the fundamental longitudinal-acoustic mode of the cylindrical chamber is the mechanism of combustion enhancement. An observable combustion enhancement required that the amplitude of the fluid velocity oscillation in this acoustic mode be greater than or approximately equal to the flame propagation speed and was associated with a wrinkled or cellular flame structure with dimensions on the order of 1/2 cm. These results are in good agreement with values for the threshold acoustic velocity amplitude and dimension of cellular structure predicted for a periodically accelerated flame.

    Results are presented of the first experiments in which high-current electron beam injection is shown to modify the combustion of both lean and rich ethylene-air mixtures. The rate of pressure rise in the chamber increases by up to a factor of 2 and flame speed increases by 40%–50% for cases in which an electron beam is injected into a spark-ignited nonstoichiometric ethylene-air mixture. Spectroscopic emission from the flame is modified by electron beam injection with more rapid rise and decay of OH line emission. Further research is needed to identify the cause of the observed enhancement in combustion rate.

    The cellular and subcellular distribution of Ni within leaves of Hybanthus floribundus (Lindley) F. Muell, a hyperaccumulator of Ni, was investigated at relatively high spatial resolution using energy-dispersive X-ray microanalysis (EDAX). Elemental distribution maps showed that Ni was predominantly localized in the vacuoles of epidermal cells in the leaves. Quantification of Ni revealed concentrations up to 275 mmol kg−1 (embedded tissue) in some epidermal vacuoles. The accumulation of Ni in these cells was associated with a decrease in the concentration of Na and K. There was no indication that Ni was associated with P, S or Cl in the vacuoles. Ni was also concentrated on the outside of cell walls throughout the leaves, indicating that apoplastic compartmentation is also involved in Ni tolerance and accumulation in this plant.
