The times taken to reach the end point of pre-oxygenation and for the oxygen saturation to decrease to 92% during a period of apnoea were found not to be significantly different between the two age groups. It is concluded that in spite of the physiological changes that occur with age, end-tidal oxygen concentration monitoring is as useful in the elderly population as in young adults as an end point for pre-oxygenation.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

The observations have been performed partly in India and partly in Japan under the collaboration of the three groups. The present results are compared with results of similar observations carried out by the LRL (Lawrence Radiation Laboratory) group. Some of these X-ray observations were accompanied by simultaneous optical observations. Relationships between the hardness of the X-ray spectrum and the X-ray intensity and between the hardness and the optical luminosity are compiled. The relationships among the parameters (temperature, density and size) which characterize the postulated isothermal cloud model of SCO X-1 are given. They indicate that SCO X-1 is characterized by a temperature of about 107–108K, a density of about 1016–1017 cm−3 and a radius of about 108–109 cm respectively. We further show that the temperature is inversely correlated with the size of the source; an increase in temperature corresponds to a decrease in the radius and an increase in density.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

ISSN: 1572-946XSource: Springer Online Journal Archives 1860-2000Topics: PhysicsNotes: Abstract This paper describes the strong fluctuations in the intensity of radio source PKS 2025-15, observed at 327 MHz, during its occultation by comet Kohoutek (1973f) in 1974, January 5. Possible mechanisms which could produce the observed fluctuations are examined. It is difficult to explain the fluctuations in terms of scintillation produced due to the passage of radio waves through the irregular cometary plasma. No detectable radio emission was observed from the comet at 327 MHz.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

ISSN: 1420-9071Source: Springer Online Journal Archives 1860-2000Topics: BiologyMedicineNotes: Summary Rat intestine was found to show a distinct acid phytase activity (pH optimum 4.7) in addition to that of an alkaline phytase (pH optimum 8.0). The phytase and phosphatase activities were found to differ in their developmental pattern and responded differentially to some inhibitors. Thus the two activities seem to be due to two independent enzymes and are not the activity of a nonspecific phosphatase as has been suspected formerly.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

One patient had electrocardiographic evidence of Long-Ganong-Levine syndrome with multiple supraventricular premature beats. Echocardiographically one patient had late systolic prolapse of the posterior mitral leaflet and another had paradoxical movements of the interventricular septum. The study suggests that cardiac involvement is infrequent in PM-DM.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

ISSN: 1573-5036Source: Springer Online Journal Archives 1860-2000Topics: Agriculture, Forestry, Horticulture, Fishery, Domestic Science, NutritionNotes: Abstract Field experiments were conducted to determine the influence of six commercial herbicides and of hand-hoeing on symbiotic parameters and grain yield of lentil (Lens culinaris Med.). The herbicides were sprayed at the pre-emergence stage. Number of nodules, nodule dry weight and nitrogenase activity were found to decrease with the use of Oxyfluorfen, Linuron, Metribuzin and Oxadiazon, whereas the effects of Terbutryn and Methabenzthiazuron were similar to that of hand-hoeing. Any harmful effect of herbicides on symbiotic parameters was less when seeds were inoculated with Rhizobium leguminosarum.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

Les résultats obtenus permettent de prévoir à une première approximation, les effets de la largeur finie sur le facteur d'intensité des contraintes d'une plaque fissurée.Notes: Abstract The expression for the strain energy of a plate with an elliptical hole has been derived using the Inglis solution, in an attempt to trace the missing details between the Griffith Solutions of 1921 and 1924. The results obtained permit, to a first approximation, the evaluation of the finite width effect on the stress-intensity factor of a cracked plate.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -
