An endemic disease in tropical countries, especially in Latin America, an increase is expected in its frequency in Europe because of increasing shifts in population. We report the case of a Spanish woman who had lived for some time in Bolivia and Peru who presented at our Department with a tumoral growth on the mucosa of her lower lip. Clinically, this was interpreted as a mucocele (salivary mucoid ‘cyst’); but histological study of the excised piece revealed, surprisingly, that it was a single–element cysticercosis.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

The potential usefulness of filamentous haemagglutinin (FHA) of Bordetella pertussis as an adjuvant was assessed in a mouse model. The glutathione-S-transferase of Schistosoma mansoni (Sm28GST) was used for intranasal administration, while the gut-resistant keyhole limpet haemocyanin (KLH) was administrated by the oral route. For both antigens, coadministration with FHA increased antigen-specific immunoglobulin titres. This adjuvant effect did not require chemical cross-linking or direct interaction between FHA and the antigen tested. FHA also behaved as an adjuvant by the subcutaneous route, indicating that its adjuvanticity is not restricted to binding to mucosal surfaces. The FHA-induced adjuvanticity was also observed in mice with high anti-FHA antibody titres as a result of antipertussis vaccination, indicating that pre-existing anti-FHA antibodies do not impair FHA adjuvanticity. No mRNA coding for proinflammatory cytokines was induced in the lungs after intranasal FHA administration. However, an increase in the levels of mRNAs coding for B7-1, transforming growth factor (TGF)-β and major histocompatibility complex (MHC)-II was detected in the lungs after FHA administration. Although the molecular mechanisms of the FHA-induced adjuvanticity remain to be elucidated, the data presented here indicate that this adhesin, already assessed for human use as a pertussis vaccine constituent, represents a promising adjuvant to improve the humoral immune response when given by mucosal routes.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

Dermatofibroma is a cutaneous fibrohistiocytic lesion considered neoplastic by some authors and inflammatory by others. Eruptive dermatofibromas have been described in patients with HIV infection or with other altered immunity situations. We present the case of a 32-year-old, HIV-positive man with visceral leishmaniasis who complained of the appearance of a cutaneous lesion in the leg formed by the coexistence of dermatofibroma and Leishmania parasitic colonization. As far as we know, this type of association has not been reported previously. We consider that the dermatofibroma could have developed as an unusual form of fibrohistiocytic reaction to leishmania. From a practical approach, we recommend the search of leishmaniasis in dermatofibroma in immunosupressed patients.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

Consistent disease transmission via latex injection, presence of similar isometric particles in the laticiferous vessels of diseased plants, and detection of double-stranded DNA in naturally and experimentally infected papaya trees suggest that a virus is the causal agent. Conclusive evidence for viral aetiology was previously lacking, mostly because every attempt to purify the putative virus from infected papayas had failed. Following the successful purification and partial characterization of the meleira virus, healthy papaya seedlings injected with purified virus particles later developed typical symptoms of the disease. Negatively stained, isometric, full and ‘empty’ purified virus particles measured 42 and 38 nm, respectively. The viral genome was a single dsRNA molecule of about 12 kbp. Several capsid proteins, ranging in size from 14·4 to 45 kDa, were consistently revealed by PAGE. Papaya meleira virus (PMeV) appears to represent a novel group of viruses, with no known similar counterpart among known plant-, vertebrate-, invertebrate- or prokaryote-infecting viruses.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

Patients and methods: Between July 1989 and December 1991, 44 consecutive patients (M/F 36/8; median age: 45, range 20–72; performance status (PS) 0: 20 patients, PS 1: 14 patients, PS 2: 10 patients) with recurrent or metastatic UCNT were entered in this study after complete clinical, biological, and radiological pre-therapeutic work-ups. Chemotherapy (FMEP regimen) consisted of 800 mg/m2/day 5-fluorouracil in continuous infusion from day 1 to day 4 combined with 70 mg/m2 epirubicin, 10 mg/m2 mitomycin, and 100 mg/m2 cisplatin on day 1, every four weeks for six cycles. Mitomycin was delivered in cycles 1, 3, and 5 only. Eleven patients had isolated loco-regional recurrences, 12 patients had local recurrences associated with distant metastasis, and 21 patients had metastasis only. Toxicity and response were evaluated according to WHO criteria. Toxicity: Grade 3–4 neutropenia was observed in 122 of 212 evaluable cycles (57%) and 39 of 44 patients (89%); febrile neutropenia occurred in 16 patients (36%) and 24 cycles (11.3%). Grade 3–4 thrombocytopenia was observed in 27 patients (61%) and 45 cycles (21%), including 27 of 45 cycles (60%) with mitomycin. Grade 3 anemia was noted in 18 patients (40%) and 23 cycles (11%), including 18 of 23 cycles (78%) with mitomycin. Grade 3–4 mucositis occurred in 25 cycles (11%) and 14 patients (32%), mainly in those previously treated with radiation therapy in the head and neck area. There were four treatment-related deaths (9%); three of them neutropenia-related, and one of cardiac toxicity. Response: Forty-four patients were evaluable for response: There were 23 of 44 objective responses (52%), including six complete responses (13%), and 17 partial responses (38%). Additional radiotherapy was given to 13 patients after documentation of response: Nasopharyngeal tumor + cervical nodes (eight patients) and/or on bone metastasis sites (five patients); mediastinal lymph nodes (one patient). At a median follow-up of 87 months (range 71–100), five patients are alive and in continuous complete remission. The median survival time was 14 months and the median time to progression nine months. We present a first analysis of such a system using the potential vorticity approach. Our results show that its main characteristic is the existence of a negative potential vorticity (PV) dome and a funnel-like structure for potential temperature, both located at the centre of the low. The build-up and evolution of this PV dome can be understood in terms of the dot products of the absolute vorticity and the gradient of diabetic heating vectors and the curl of the friction forces and the gradient of potential temperature vectors. The inhibition of the Algerian Mediterranean cyclogenesis during the summer seems to bear some relation to the existence of this kind of low-pressure disturbance over the Iberian Peninsula.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

Very often from April to October, and almost every day during the summer, the sea breeze circulation develops. The shape and the topography of the island determine that the main characteristic feature of the sea breeze is the existence of a convergence line in the centre of the island. In this paper we describe the sea breeze circulation. ISSN: 1436-5065Source: Springer Online Journal Archives 1860-2000Topics: GeographyPhysicsNotes: Summary Several cases of lee cyclogenesis that occurred during ALPEX-SOP have been analyzed, with the aim of separating the large scale structures from the subsynoptic/meso-a scale features that are characteristic of this meteorological phenomenon. The results presented here are mainly based on composites of the analyzed cases. We assume that the deformation caused by the orography can be, at least to a reasonable extent, isolated from the “undisturbed” state using scale separation. The analysis technique we employ provides the scale separation as built-in in the interpolation algorithm. The scale separation error due to the large inhomogeneities of the data density distribution is partly corrected using a method described in the text. The orographic disturbance appears in different mesoscale fields as a quasiantisymmetric dipolar structure. For example, high/low pressure, cold/warm temperature and anticyclonic/cyclonic couplets characterize the mesoscale fields near the Alps. A qualitative agreement is found with the structure of the orographically induced perturbations predicted by the normal mode theory of lee cyclogenesis.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL:
