We present the design of a highly stable, compact system that achieves the frequency stabilization of a distributed feedback laser diode to an excited-state argon transition at 1.323 μm. The argon atomic reference is generated in a miniature hollow cathode lamp. A small a/c magnetic field is used to Zeeman split the transition and both right- and left-circularly polarized light are used to generate the error discriminant signal and cancel laser relative intensity noise. The output does not contain any frequency modulated components and has been measured to have long-term frequency stability of better than 8×10−11 (20 kHz) with the Allan Variance technique. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Summary.  The objective of this study was to review and evaluate the performance of health-related quality of life (HRQL) and other health status measures used in studies of adult haemophilia and provide recommendations for future research. A systematic literature review was performed to identify HRQL and health status measures used in haemophilia. Literature was identified using medical databases, Internet and manual searches. The search was restricted to articles published in English since 1986. Ninety-six abstracts were located; 19 relevant articles were selected for detailed review. Three main types of HRQL measures were identified: generic psychometric-based HRQL (SF-36 and SF-12), utility-based HRQL [EQ-5D and Health Utilities Index (HUI)], and musculoskeletal-specific HRQL (Arthritis Impact Measurement Scale 2, AIMS 2) instruments. No patient-rated haemophilia-specific HRQL instrument was found. The SF-36, the EQ-5D, and the HUI were able to discriminate haemophilia patient subgroups with respect to disease severity and HIV comorbidity status. Sixteen additional scales were identified that were used to measure the different aspects of physical, psychological, and social functioning of patients. There were no clinical studies of haemophilia carried out that employed HRQL instruments, thus responsiveness of these instruments could not be evaluated. The variety of instruments used in haemophilia studies highlights the need for a tool that can capture the full impact of haemophilia and its treatment on patients’ HRQL. Developing such a tool poses the unique challenge of accounting for common comorbidities, such as HIV and chronic hepatitis that may have a greater HRQL impact than the underlying disease.

Grasshoppers are a dominant group of herbivorous insects throughout the world, and their high diversity, functional importance, sensitivity to disturbance and ease of sampling makes them potentially useful bioindicators for land management. In Australia, however, the dynamics of grasshopper assemblages are extremely poorly understood. Here we describe the responses of grasshopper (Acridoidea, Eumastacoidea and Tettigonioidea) assemblages in the Kakadu region of the Northern Territory, Australia to disturbance associated with mining. Three questions were addressed in this study: (i) do local grasshopper assemblages show consistent responses to disturbance?; (ii) can particular species or functional groups be identified that are reliable indicators of ecological disturbance?; and (iii) to what extent do the responses of grasshopper assemblages merely reflect those of vegetation? Grasshoppers were sampled at 26 sites located in and around the Ranger uranium mine, representing three habitat types with respect to degree of disturbance: (i) ‘natural’ (10 sites representing a range of ‘undisturbed’ savanna habitats); (ii) ‘disturbed’ (10 sites representing a range of disturbances, but with soil intact); and (iii) ‘waste rock’ (six sites undergoing rehabilitation on a constructed landform). A total of 56 grasshopper species in 46 genera was recorded during the study, with site species richness ranging from five to 20. There were no significant differences between habitat types in site species diversity, but multivariate analysis demonstrated a strong correspondence between grasshopper species composition and degree of habitat disturbance. Using Indicator Species Analysis, six species and one functional group were identified as significant indicators of habitat type in relation to disturbance. Grasshopper responses were correlated with that of vegetation, but grasshopper assemblages showed apparently meaningful differentiation among disturbed sites that was not evident on the basis of floristic data. Our results demonstrate that grasshopper assemblages respond to disturbances associated with human land use and that these responses do not simply reflect those of plants. Grasshoppers are therefore potentially useful bioindicators of ecological disturbance in Australia, but further work is required on the extent to which their responses reflect general ecological change.

Background : Patient-based symptom assessments are necessary to evaluate the effectiveness of medical treatments for gastroparesis.Aim : To summarize the development and measurement qualities of the Gastroparesis Cardinal Symptom Index (GCSI), a new measure of gastroparesis-related symptoms. Methods : The GCSI was based on reviews of the medical literature, clinician interviews and patient focus groups. The measurement qualities (i.e. reliability, validity) of the GCSI were examined in 169 gastroparesis patients. Patients were recruited from seven clinical centres in the USA to participate in this observational study. Patients completed the GCSI, SF-36 Health Survey and disability day questions at a baseline visit and again after 8 weeks. Clinicians independently rated the severity of the patients' symptoms, and both clinicians and patients rated the change in gastroparesis-related symptoms over the 8-week study. Results: The GCSI consists of three sub-scales: post-prandial fullness/early satiety, nausea/vomiting and bloating. The internal consistency reliability was 0.84 and the test–re-test reliability was 0.76 for the GCSI total score. Significant relationships were observed between the clinician-assessed symptom severity and the GCSI total score, and significant associations were found between the GCSI scores and SF-36 physical and mental component summary scores and restricted activity and bed disability days. Patients with greater symptom severity, as rated by clinicians, reported greater symptom severity on the GCSI. The GCSI total scores were responsive to changes in overall gastroparesis symptoms as assessed by clinicians (P = 0.0002) and patients (P = 0.002).Conclusion: The findings of this study indicate that the GCSI is a reliable and valid instrument for measuring the symptom severity in patients with gastroparesis.

    Description / Table of Contents:

Abstract This paper provides an insight into the elaboration of strategies for emission reduction at present internationally requested by applying energy-emission models. One of these models, the EC-EFOM-ENV LP-model is presented in detail. Its application is shown in principle as well as to the special situation of countries in transition from a centrally planned to a market economy. The limitations of this approach and further applications on an international level are assessed.
