ISSN: 1365-3040Source: Blackwell Publishing Journal Backfiles 1879-2005Topics: BiologyNotes: We report the characterization of high- and low-sodium-transporting lines developed by intravarietal selection within a cultivar, IR36, of rice (Oryza sativa L.). The purpose was to investigate the mechanistic basis of sodium uptake in material in which differences in salt uptake could be isolated from the many other morphological and physiological characteristics that affect the phenotypic expression of salt tolerance. The lines differed in mean sodium transport by a factor of 2. They differed in vigour and water use efficiency, which are characters that modify the effects of salt transport, by only 12% or 13%. The lines did not differ significantly in other physiological traits that are components of salt resistance: compartmentalization at the leaf and cellular levels. There was a strong correlation between the transport of sodium and a tracer for apoplastic pathways (trisodium, 3-hydroxy-5,8,10-pyrene trisulphonic acid, PTS) in both lines. The regression coefficient for sodium transport on PTS transport was the same in both lines. The individual variation in PTS transport was similar to that in sodium transport, and the variation in the transport of both was very much greater than the variation in any other character studied. The high-sodium-transporting line took up proportionately more PTS than the low-sodium-transporting line. It is concluded that the transpirational bypass flow is of major importance in sodium uptake by rice and that selection for differences in sodium transport has been brought about by selection for heritable differences in the bypass flow.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

ISSN: 1572-946XSource: Springer Online Journal Archives 1860-2000Topics: PhysicsNotes: Abstract This article studies the laminar flow of an electrically conducting non-Newtonian fluid (Rivlin-Encksen type) past an infinite porous flat plate to a step function change in suction velocity in the presence of a transverse magnetic field. The Laplace transform technique has been employed to solve the basic differential equations. The solutions of the velocity profile and skin-friction are obtained and the effects of the visco-elastic parameter, the magnetic field and the time parameter on the fluid flow have been studied in several tables.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

We report here two cases of brain abscess due to Nocardia species-one due to usual N. asteroides and other by uncommon N. caviae. N. asteroides affected the brain in a post renal transplant patient, whereas N. caviae caused infection of brain in an apparently healthy individual. To the best of our knowledge, all the previous cases of brain abscess due to Nocardia caviae have been reported in compromised hosts. Agar dilution antimicrobial testing showed relatively higher resistant pattern in N. asteroides. In spite of antimicrobial therapy, both the patients succumbed, one within 4 days and other after an initial improvement for four weeks due to drainage of abscess.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

ISSN: 1573-093XSource: Springer Online Journal Archives 1860-2000Topics: PhysicsNotes: Abstract The data from a high counting rate neutron monitor has been analysed to study the nature of galactic cosmic-ray transient modulation associated with three classes of magnetic clouds, i.e., clouds associated with shock, stream interface and cold magnetic enhancement. It is found that the decreases in cosmic-ray intensity which are associated with clouds preceded by a shock, are very high (Forbush-type) and these decreases start earlier than the arrival of the cloud at the Earth. From the study of the time profile of these decreases it is found that the onset time of a Forbush-type decrease produced by a shock-associated cloud starts nearly at the time of arrival of the shock front at the Earth and the recovery is almost complete within a week. The decreases in cosmic-ray intensity associated with clouds followed by a stream interface are smaller in magnitude and larger in duration. The depression starts on the day of the arrival of the cloud. The decreases associated with the third category of clouds, i.e., clouds associated with cold magnetic enhancement (a region in which plasma temperature is anomalously low and the magnetic field strength is enhanced) are of still smaller amplitude and duration. The decrease in this case starts on the day the cloud arrives at the Earth. It seems that the Forbush decrease modulating region consists of a shock front followed by a plasma sheath in which the field intensity is high and turbulent. The amplitude of decrease is related to the field magnitude and the speed of the cloud. Both shocked plasma and the magnetic cloud are influential in determining the time profile of these decreases. In our view it is not the magnetic field strength or the topology alone which is responsible for the cosmic-ray depression. The most likely additional effect is the increased degree of turbulence.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL:
