ISSN: 1089-7623Source: AIP Digital ArchiveTopics: PhysicsElectrical Engineering, Measurement and Control TechnologyNotes: A mutual inductance bridge which may be used for automatic measurement of ac magnetic susceptibilities from 4 K to room temperature at frequencies up to 1 kHz is described. An alternative and new arrangement of the probe is described in details. The coil set is kept at room temperature and moves in such a way to place the sample in the center of each of the secondary coils. The sample, motionless, has its temperature controlled by a helium flow refrigerator. Use of a magnetic shield minimizes coupling of the probe with nearby magnetic materials. The movement of the probe and the operation of the bridge are fully controlled by a personal computer. This probe has a sensitivity of 10−7 emu in an ac magnetic field of 8 G rms and frequency of 100 Hz. The frequency range employed can easily be extended to 10 kHz without seriously affecting the accuracy of the measurements. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

Contributions from other proton sites were first subtracted from the line shape which was subsequently analyzed by Van Vleck's second moment method using a spin-echo technique to separate like-spin from unlike-spin contributions. Among various models examined, only one in which protons are located on oxygen planes nearest to normal lithium sites, midway between two oxygen anions in an oxygen triangle, was found to be consistent with the data. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

Published 2000Staff ViewISSN: 1089-7690Source: AIP Digital ArchiveTopics: PhysicsChemistry and PharmacologyNotes: Continuous-wave (cw) and pulsed electron paramagnetic resonance (pulsed EPR) techniques were used to investigate spin dynamics in moderately and slightly doped poly(o-methoxyaniline), a polyaniline derivative. EPR line shapes, measured by standard cw EPR, and relaxation rates, measured by electron spin–echo methods, were studied as a function of temperature, in the ranges 6–300 K (cw) and 6–100 K (pulsed). Experimental results were explained by a model which considered two types of spins: isolated polarons in an insulating matrix, and delocalized ones in conductive islands (clusters) formed by dopant aggregates. Experimental data agreed with the assumption that EPR spectra are generated by isolated polarons coupled to the clusters by dipole–dipole interactions. Furthermore, some experimental evidence suggests that spin dynamic within the clusters, which play an essential role in the interpretation of the EPR results, is determined by exchange interactions. Consequences of the proposed model are discussed. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

Furthermore, preliminary findings with the selective orexin-1 receptor antagonist, SB-334867, suggest that orexin-A regulation of food intake is mediated via the orexin-1 receptor. At present, however, little is known about either the intrinsic effects of SB-334867 on the normal structure of feeding behaviour, or its effects upon orexin-A-induced behavioural change. In the present study, we have employed a continuous monitoring technique to characterize the effects of SB-334867 (3–30 mg/kg, i.p.) on the microstructure of rat behaviour during a 1-h test with palatable wet mash. Administered alone, SB-334867 (30 mg/kg, but not lower doses) significantly reduced food intake and most active behaviours (eating, grooming, sniffing, locomotion and rearing), while increasing resting. Although suggestive of a behaviourally nonselective (i.e. sedative) action, the structure of feeding behaviour was well-preserved at this dose level, with the reduction in behavioural output clearly attributable to an earlier onset of behavioural satiety. As previously reported, orexin-A (10 µg per rat i.c.v.) stimulated food intake, increased grooming and delayed the onset of behavioural satiety. Pretreatment with SB-334867 dose-dependently blocked these effects of orexin-A, with significant antagonism evident at dose levels (3–10 mg/kg) below those required to produce intrinsic behavioural effects under present test conditions. Together, these findings strongly support the view that orexin-A is involved in the regulation of feeding patterns and that this influence is mediated through the orexin-1 receptor.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

A rod shaped, facultatively anaerobic, Gram negative bacterium was isolated that infected healthy parsley plants, reproducing the original symptoms. Biochemical, biological, staining and morphological studies suggested that the bacterium was most closely related to Erwinia carotovora subsp. betavasculorum. As E. carotovora has not been reported from parsley (in Brazil) (Robbs et al., 1981), this appears to be a new disease in Brazil.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

A cuneiform leaf blight which started at the edges of leaves and resulted in complete leaf decay has recently been observed. The causal agent was identified as Pseudomonas cichorii.
