Abstract Niacin utilization to humans from whole grain ground sorghum flour and decorticated grain ground sorghum flour was studied. During two, randomly-arranged experimental periods of 14 days each, the 10 healthy adult subjects ate constant, laboratory controlled diets which included 28 g per day of either a ready-to-eat cereal prepared from whole-ground-sorghum flour or one prepared from decorticated (polished) sorghum flour. All subjects received both experimental treatments, made complete collections of urine and stools, and gave fasting blood samples at the ends of both experimental periods. Although the whole ground cereal contained higher amounts of niacin than did the decorticated cereal, urinary losses of N-methylnicotinamine were higher when the decorticated cereal was fed than when the whole ground cereal was used. Blood serum levels of nicotinamide and N-nicotinamide were higher when the whole ground cereal was fed than the feeding of the decorticated cereal was given. Therefore, it appears that the niacin of whole ground sorghum is absorbed but then the need for niacin is either increased or its urinary excretion is inhibited.

Abstract A study of the immobilization for226Ra waste has been carried out. Cement-based concrete was used as a matrix for the solidification of radium waste. The experimental results show that the cement mixture with water/cement between 0.46–0.54 has higher strengh (above 20 MPa), and the compressive strength was not reduced by addition of 1% barite or the radium waste (RaSO4) into the concrete solid.

Abstract A new method of thermal desorption chromatography, in which hydrogen is used as carrier instead of helium, and a water bath instead of an air bath, is presented for determining the specific surface area of uranium compounds. The method proposed has a higher accuracy and a better applicability.

Abstract A three-dimensional leaching model was developed to describe the leaching of radionuclide from a cement-based concrete solid. The film mass transfer and interparticle diffusion were considered simultaneously. On the basis of the derived model the long-term behavior of radium-226 leaching from the waste solid has been quantitatively investigated.

Abstract The residual fluorine in ammonium uranyl tricarbonate (AUC) cannot be removed, while a large part of residual fluorine in ammonium diuranate (ADU) can be removed, when AUC and ADU are decomposed and reduced under dry hydrogen atmosphere. UO2 was prepared by decomposing and reducing AUC and ADU in dry hydrogen atmosphere. The defluorination kinetics of UO2 at 500–700°C in atmosphere of 50% H2-50% H2O was investigated. The results show that the defluorination kinetics supports the Lindman's assertion that the residual fluorine forms a solid-solution in UO2.

    Notes:
Abstract The aim of this paper is to consider using effective natural minerals in studying the retardation and migration of radium under the influence of groundwater in the far-field of a radioactive waste repository. The properties of adsorbing radium by minerals are studied by adopting the static and dynamic adsorption method. Preliminary experimental results give confidence in the validity of using Maifanshih and barite to adsorb radium in water and to serve as effective retarding materials in radioactive waste repositories, their Kd values being 3815 and 2955, respectively. The study on a certain number of conditions of adsorbing radium by the promissing material Maifanshih is reported for the first time. The mechanism of radium adsorption has been discussed and modeling of migration of radium in the minerals has been presented to establish a rational basis for the longterm prediction required for safety assessment of underground disposal of radioactive waste.
