ISSN: 1573-7357Source: Springer Online Journal Archives 1860-2000Topics: PhysicsNotes: Abstract Measurements of the thermal conduction of liquid 3 He in the collisionless regime, where the mean free path of the thermal carriers is much greater than the channel diameter, allow a direct measurement of the carrier velocity. These experiments have been done using Vycor porous glass as the channel (average diameter ∼70 Å) at temperatures down to 16 mK. They show that the carrier velocity (∼43 m/sec) is that of quasiparticles rather than of bare 3 He atoms, whose velocity would be a factor of m*/m (∼3) greater, and thus confirm quite independently of any other measurement the validity of Landau quasiparticle theory. The data also strongly suggest a zero quasiparticle specular reflection coefficient, which allows an estimate to be made of the quasiparticle lifetime. This shows that the energy levels of quasiparticle states have a width more than ten times greater thankT at 20 mK. As an incidental result, a value for the low-temperature thermal conductivity of Vycor glass has been calculated.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL:
