    Women have been characterized as having more difficulty than men in developing a separate sense of self. This sex difference is held to have its origins in infancy in the differential response of mothers to sons and daughters. While there is clinical evidence for this sex difference, as yet there is no clear support for it in the experimental literature. In this paper we provide a foundation for future experimental research on the origins in mother-infant interaction of sex differences in the development of a separate sense of self. Using Mahler's description of the separation-individuation process as a general framework, we specify behavioral indicators of differential progress in the development of a separate sense of self at each subphase of separation-individuation and define the particular maternal behaviors relevant to that progress. An examination of existing experimental studies that employ these measures suggests that sex differences in the experience of a separate sense of self begin to emerge in early infancy and that mothers engage in different types of contact with sons and daughters in ways that facilitate the achievement of separation more for boys than for girls. The implications of these findings for future research are discussed.

    Cyclosporin and mycophenolate mofetil (MMF) are immunosuppressant agents now used frequently in the field of organ transplantation. More recently cyclosporin has been used for the treatment of a number of dermatological conditions, including severe psoriasis and eczema. Extensive diffuse morphoea is very difficult to treat. PUVA, UVA and a number of immunomodulating drugs have been used to attempt improvement but are most beneficial only in early disease. Combination treatments are often used in psoriasis, for example, but are not reported in morphoea. We present the case of a patient treated initially with cyclosporin and PUVA and subsequently with MMF and PUVA, with considerable improvement in his condition.

    Microfilamentary composites of continuous Nb fibers in Cu matrices prepared by the stack-and-draw method were tested for normal-state electrical conductivity, residual stress state, and tensile properties. Composite wires having nominal filament diameters of about 0.1 μm were characterized by elevated matrix annealing temperatures, large Nb residual strains, and high tensile strengths. In the fine-filament regime, finer wire sizes result in larger matrix resistivities, higher residual fiber strains, and higher tensile strengths with little effect on matrix annealing temperatures.

    Microfilamentary superconducting composites of Nb fibers in Cu matrices prepared by the stack and draw method were tested for tensile critical-current performance at 4.2 K. The superconducting critical-current densities increased exponentially under the influence of an applied mechanical strain until the onset of Nb fiber plastic deformation. In the elastic range, the critical-current densities conformed to log10 Jc =m (strain)+b. In several tests the critical current was increased by more than an order of magnitude by the applied strain. This behavior is consistent with an increase in the upper critical field of the Nb fibers by the applied stress.

    Microfilamentary composites of continuous Nb fibers in Cu matrices were tested for superconducting transport properties after heat treatments at 200–900 °C. The critical current density at applied magnetic field was reduced dramatically as the heat treatment temperature was increased. The scaling relations describing the critical current as a function of applied field shifted from conventional (1−h)2 scaling to higher-order relations as the heat treatment history was varied. Critical temperature transitions were abnormally broad in the fine-filament composites examined. The upper critical fields and transition temperatures approached bulk values after severe heat treatment.

    Halophilic archaea thrive in environments with salt concentrations approaching saturation. However, little is known about the way in which these organisms stabilize their secreted proteins in such ‘hostile’ conditions. Here, we present data suggesting that the utilization of protein translocation pathways for protein secretion by the Halobacteriaceae differs significantly from that of non-haloarchaea, and most probably represents an adaptation to the high-salt environment. Although most proteins are secreted via the general secretion (Sec) machinery, the twin-arginine translocation (Tat) pathway is mainly used for the secretion of redox proteins and is distinct from the Sec pathway, in that it allows cytoplasmic folding of secreted proteins. tatfind (developed in this study) was used for systematic whole-genome analysis of Halobacterium sp. NRC-1 and several other prokaryotes to identify putative Tat substrates. Our analyses revealed that the vast majority of haloarchaeal secreted proteins were predicted substrates of the Tat pathway. Strikingly, most of these putative Tat substrates were non-redox proteins, the homologues of which in non-haloarchaea were identified as putative Sec substrates. We confirmed experimentally that the secretion of one such putative Tat substrate depended on the twin-arginine motif in its signal sequence. This extensive utilization of the Tat pathway in haloarchaea suggests an evolutionary adaptation to high-salt conditions by allowing cytoplasmic folding of secreted proteins before their secretion.

    Dimorphic chloroplasts of Zea mays L. cv. GH5004 from bundle sheath and mesophyll cells contained similar amounts of DNA, while bundle sheath chloroplasts contained twice the number of nucleoids compared to mesophyll chloroplasts. On average bundle sheath nucleoids were half the size of mesophyll nucleoids and contained half as much DNA. Electron microscope autoradiography of the chloroplasts showed that the nucleoid DNA is associated with the thylakoids and in the case of mesophyll chloroplasts preferentially with the grana. These observations suggest that the differences in nucleoid distribution may be due to differences in membrane morphology, with the small nucleoids of agranal bundle sheath chloroplasts being widely dispersed.
