The equilibrium water content, dehydration enthalpies and lattice parameter values have been determined and compared with those previously obtained for pure Li and Naβ-aluminas. The mixedβ-alumina is shown to be very similar to Liβ-alumina as concerns the dehydration enthalpy and the temperature range in which the dehydration occurs, while it seems to be very similar to Naβ-alumina with respect to the equilibrium water content andc-axis values.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

Published 1989Staff ViewISSN: 1420-908XSource: Springer Online Journal Archives 1860-2000Topics: MedicineNotes: Abstract Parasympathetic innervation of the respiratory tract of nasal mucosa plays an important role in the pathogenesis of chronic hypertrophic non-allergic rhinitis (C.H.N.A.R.), the vidian nerve providing the main parasympathetic nerve supply to respiratory mucosa. The present study investigates the effect of vidian nerve resection in 22 patient with intractable C.H.N.A.R. on histamine content and formation and on the number of mast cells and their degranulation in the respiratory tract. Samples were taken from respiratory mucosa for histamine and histidine-decarboxylase assay, and for microscopic observations for mast cell density and degranulation index, before and 12–24 months after vidian nerve resection. Neurectomy of the vidian nerve completely cured the clinical symptomatology, evaluated by rhinoreomanometry, and also significantly decreased both the high histamine levels and histidine-decarboxylase activity in patients with C.H.N.A.R. The density and degranulation index of mast cells were also significantly lower after surgery. These data suggest a relationship between cholinergic activity and the secretory response of mast cells and indicates a correlation between the parasympathetic nerve supply and chronic hyperthrophic non-allergic rhinitis. The significant reduction in mast cell density, histamine levels and histidine-decarboxylase activity also lends support to the hypothesis that the parasympathetic nerve supply plays a role in the regulation of mast cell histamine.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

Published 1992Staff ViewISSN: 1432-0843Source: Springer Online Journal Archives 1860-2000Topics: MedicineNotes: Summary The pharmacokinetics of carboplatin in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and plasma was studied in five children with brain tumors (four medulloblastomas and one ependimoblastoma) who underwent preirradiation treatment with carboplatin. Carboplatin pharmacokinetics was studied following the administration of 600 mg/m2 as a 1-h infusion. Four children were treated a few weeks after surgery, whereas one child with an unresectable tumor was treated prior to surgery. All patients had a ventricular-peritoneal CSF shunt connected to a subcutaneous reservoir. Total platinum and free carboplatin were measured. The mean AUC values for free carboplatin in CSF and plasma were 2.29±1.20 and 8.18±1.27 mg ml−1 min, respectively. The mean ratio of CSF AUC to plasma AUC was 0.28 (range, 0.17–0.46). Both plasma peak levels and AUC values showed limited interpatient variability. On the other hand, carboplatin levels in CSF showed substantial interpatient variability, with a〉5-fold difference in peak levels and a 3-fold difference in AUC values being recorded. The interpatient difference in CSF pharmacokinetics may have been related at least in part to the different anatomical alterations induced by the surgical procedures or by the presence of a large tumor mass. In the four evaluable patients exhibiting macroscopic residual tumor, we observed one complete remission (CR) and two partial remissions (PR) following two cycles that consisted of two doses of 600 mg/m2 carboplatin given on 2 consecutive days (total dose, 1200 mg/m2) and were separated by a l-month interval. These results may give some indication as to the optimal dose and schedule for carboplatin administration in the treatment of primitive neuroectodermic tumors (PNET).Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

ISSN: 1432-119XSource: Springer Online Journal Archives 1860-2000Topics: BiologyMedicineNotes: Abstract Nitric oxide (NO)-synthase immunoreactivity has been detected for the first time in mast cells of human normal nasal mucosa, with an antibody specific for neuronal NO-synthase. Intense immunoreactivity was revealed in secretion granules of mast cells but was found in mast cell granules free in the extracellular matrix only in some instances; no reactivity was found in the cytoplasm of this or other cell types. These findings suggest that human nasal mast cells contain a particulate isoform of NO-synthase, which shares epitopes with neuronal NO-synthase and is rapidly removed from granules upon exocytosis.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

In this paper, the authors report 3 cases of children under three years of age, with a presumed diagnosis of PNET/MB, who were preoperatively treated with chemotherapy consisting of high doses of carboplatin alone. The treatment improved the childrens' clinical condition prior to surgery and facilitated tumor removal, resulting in partial regression of the tumor. The preoperative single-drug therapy did not affect the distological diagnosis or prevent the presence of an effective degree of tumor sensitivity to the drug. All three children are still diseasefree, after a mean follow-up period of 42 months.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

ISSN: 1572-8943Keywords: β-cyclodextrins ; dehydration enthalpies ; water interactionsSource: Springer Online Journal Archives 1860-2000Topics: Chemistry and PharmacologyNotes: Abstract The thermodynamics of β-cyclodextrin dehydration is investigated, by parallel DSC/TG experiments, on both fully and partially hydrated samples. The apparent dehydration enthalpies per mole of water are impossibly high and this fact suggests that another phenomenon, in addition to the rupture of the β-cyclodextrin/H2O hydrogen bonds, contributes to the peak area. All the experimental evidence agrees with an ‘interaction model’ which assumes that deydration is accompanied by a slow and reversible rearrangement of the β-cyclodextrin structure.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

From the dependence of the dehydration enthalpy values on the water content it has been deduced that lattice water can be bound in two different ways i.e. by ion-dipole interactions with conducting cations and by hydrogen bonds with spinel block oxygens. As expected, the first one gives binding energies depending on the nature of the monovalent cation (ΔH=84.5 and 59.4 kJ/mol H2O for Li and Na beta-alumina respectively). In contrast, the enthalpy change associated with the second one is identical for the three beta-aluminas (ΔH=15.1 kJ/mol H2O). The ceramic Na beta-alumina undergoes a surface reaction too (with CO2) leading to the formation of carbonates and bicarbonates.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

ISSN: 1573-1111Keywords: β-Cyclodextrin ; ketoprofen ; hydrationSource: Springer Online Journal Archives 1860-2000Topics: Chemistry and PharmacologyNotes: Abstract The ketoprofen/beta-cyclodextrin (β-CD) inclusion compounds may be conveniently obtained through a solid state reaction at room temperature in the presence of saturated water vapour. Relative to the corresponding complexes produced with the usual coprecipitation method, the new compounds have a higher ketoprofen content and/or different properties. In particular, the formation reaction is not accompanied by a loss of hydration water, which is released in distinct stages upon heating. The thermodynamics of the dehydration process is discussed.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -
