Two solid phases, α-N2O and β-N2O, were observed. The α pattern is consistent with the known low-pressure low-temperature ordered cubic form, space group Pa3, up to 4.8 GPa where transition to a new β solid occurs. From refinements using photographic x-ray intensities, the β-N2O structure was determined to be orthorhombic Cmca. There are four molecules in a unit cell with a=4.954 A(ring), b=4.497 A(ring), and c=6.201 A(ring) at 5.81 GPa and 298 K. The molecular axes lie parallel to the bc plane and are tipped at an angle of 37.2° to the b axis. Random head-to-tail orientation is probable in both solids. The phase diagram and values of the molar volume for N2O are compared with published data for the isoelectronic molecule CO2. First, unilateral intrastriatal microinjection of the excitotoxin kainic acid (2 μg in 1 μ1) was shown to evoke vigorous contraversive circling, followed 1 or 2 weeks later by profound decreases in striatal AChE (24 and 54%), GAD (51 and 75%), and protein (36 and 47%), as well as loss of GAD (45% at 2 weeks) in the ipsilateral substantia nigra. Similar striatal treatments with SKF 38393 (30 μg in 0.5–1 μ), the related benzazepines SKF 82526 (D1 agonist, 30 μg in 1 μ1) and SCH 23390 (D1 antagonist, 5 μg in 1 μ1), or the phenanthridine D1 agonist CY 208-243 (5 μg in 1 μ1) failed to affect the rats' behaviour or their striatal levels of AChE, GAD, and protein. Intrastriatal SKF 38393 (30 μg in 0.5 μ1) also had no influence on these enzymes in the substantia nigra. It is concluded that none of the D1 dopaminergic compounds examined here was neurotoxic toward the many different cell groups that contain AChE and/or GAD in the striatum.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

Measurements were also made in the postpartum period. There was no significant change in these measurements either throughout pregnancy or compared with postpartum values. The programme involved: (i) the establishment of district metering throughout the distribution system; (ii) the replacement of certain retail meters; and (iii) the metering of new fire connections (other than those serving sprinkler installations). Further steps were taken to improve the situation and included: (a) the monitoring of minimum night flows, (b) regular sounding of distribution mains; (c) the establishment of a full-time waste detection gang; and (d) with improved control valves becoming available, more effective pressure control of the system. The Corporation's computer was called upon to determine: (i) the monthly losses from each of the hundred or so districts; (ii) the life history, in graphical form, of retail meters under review; and (iii) a record of expenditure on leakage control. The paper describes the development of the methods used in leakage control, costing less than half a cent per cubic metre of water purchased, and outlines the practical experience gained in reducing losses from 16% to less than 5% over a period of 14 years.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

Three solid phases, β, δ, and ε, were observed in each material. The known β and δ solids were confirmed to have hexagonal space group P63/mmc and cubic space group Pm3n, respectively. From refinements using photographic x-ray intensities, the new ε-N2 and ε-CO structures were determined to be rhombohedral R3¯c. There are eight ordered molecules in the ε-N2 unit cell with a=5.928 A(ring) and α=85.14° at 110 K and 7.8 GPa, and eight ordered molecules in the ε-CO unit cell with a=6.059 A(ring) and α=85.73° at 100 K and 5.5 GPa. The CO molecules are randomly oriented head to tail. The δ–ε transition takes place through an ordering and small displacement of the N2 and CO molecules, accompanied by a slight extension of the lattice along a cube diagonal. Molar volumes are presented over an expanded P-T region. Recent theoretical calculations using lattice energies, molecular dynamics, and symmetry correlations correctly predict features in the N2 and CO phase diagrams.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

For the first time in field conditions, both the production and expansion of leaf cells were shown to be sensitive to atmospheric carbon dioxide. Leaf area expansion rate and final leaf size were stimulated under FACE for three species (Populus x euramericana (I-214), P. nigra (Jean Pourtet) and P. alba (2AS-11), with the largest effect observed for P. x euramericana (61%). In this species and in P. nigra, both epidermal cell size and cell number were increased, whereas for P. alba, only cell production was increased in FACE. Two findings suggest that changes in the cell wall may be important in explaining larger leaf cells in FACE: (i) Leaf cell wall extensibility of rapidly growing leaves increased in all species in FACE; and (ii) an increase in xyloglucan endotransglycosylase activity, a cell wall-loosening enzyme, was increased in FACE and associated with leaf growth rate. The results suggest that the mechanisms by which FACE promotes leaf growth differ, depending on species. Despite this, increases in final leaf size provide an important component driving increased biomass accumulation in POPFACE, during this first year of rapid growth, prior to canopy closure. The question as to whether these effects are the result of a direct response to CO2, or are driven indirectly through substrate availability remains unresolved, although evidence from the literature suggests that the latter mechanism is most likely.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -
