ISSN: 1525-1314Source: Blackwell Publishing Journal Backfiles 1879-2005Topics: GeosciencesNotes: Abstract Petrological study of highly strained carbonate and pelitic rocks within the contact aureole surrounding the western part of the Papoose Flat pluton yields thermal profiles (plots of metamorphic temperature versus distance) across the aureole that show temperature gradients which are relatively flat and narrow (〈100m). The gradients occur close to the contact and indicate a slight decrease in temperature from 500–550°C at the pluton/wall rock contact to 450–500°C at the outer margin of the aureole. One thermal profile across low-strain metasedimentary rocks located in the southern part of the aureole shows that thermal effects from emplacement extend no further than 600 m from the contact. Coexistence of andalusite and cordierite in pelitic rocks of the aureole constrain pressures to 〈4 kbar. Thermal modelling using an analytical solution of the conductive heat flow equation for a rectangular-shaped pluton reproduces the observed thermal maxima and profile shape. Conductive rather than convective cooling also is supported by isotopic and field evidence for limited fluid flow along the strongly deformed margin of the pluton. Simple thermal models coupled with observed high-temperature deformation features and a measured 90% attenuation of stratigraphic units in the plastically deformed western part of the pluton's aureole indicate that strain rates may have been of the order of 10-12s-1. Evidence for episodic heating, such as two distinct generations of andalusite growth in pelites from the aureole, alternatively may indicate a longer heating event and, therefore, slower strain rates. Thermal models also indicate that parts of the pluton still may have been above the solidus during deformation of the pluton margin and aureole.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

Plasma osmolality fell by 11 mosmol/kg during pregnancy. Brain water content remained unaltered, but levels of taurine and ninhydrin-positive substances fell by 48.5 and 21.9%, respectively. It is suggested that one way in which brain cells are prevented from swelling during the mild hypoosmolality of pregnancy is through loss of cellular amino nitrogen, particularly taurine.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

This paper discusses the scope of such incidents and their consequences by reference to two particular incidents; the loss of a container of the pesticide lindane from MV Perintis in the English Channel in 1989, and the grounding of the oil tanker Sea Empress in Wales in 1996 and the consequent oilspill. Delivery was achieved by elective Caesarean section under epidural anaesthesia. The patients were examined using laryngotracheoscopy and spirometry to assess the long-term anatomical and functional consequences of percutaneous dilational tracheostomy. Apart from one patient who had requested a scar revision, no patient was symptomatic. A significant (〉10%) tracheal stenosis was identified in four asymptomatic patients, two of whom also had spirometric evidence of this obstruction. These results suggest that the long-term outcome after percutaneous tracheostomy is at least as good as that following conventional surgical tracheostomy. Refinements of the percutaneous technique, such as endoscopic guidance, may further improve the results.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

Russet Burbank) tubers. Storage of field-grown tubers at 3°C in the dark resulted in the progressive loss of tuber meristem dormancy, defined as measurable growth after transfer to 20°C for 7 days. Dormancy emergence was concomitant with sustained increases in histone H3.1 and H3.2 multi-acetylation, and with transient increases in H4 multi-acetylation that peaked 4–5 months post-harvest. Treatment of dormant tubers with bromoethane (BE) resulted in rapid loss of dormancy over 9 days. Similar to cold-stored field-grown tubers, dormancy break in BE-treated tubers occurred at the same time as transient rises in H4 and H3.1/3.2 multi-acetylation, peaking at days 1 and 4, respectively. BE treatment also resulted in small increases in RNA synthesis at day 6, and a three-fold, sustained activation of DNA synthesis thereafter. A defined sequence of epigenetic events, beginning with previously characterized transient cytosine demethylation, followed by increased H3 and H4 histone acetylation and ultimately, tuber meristem re-activation, may thus exist in potatoes during dormancy exit and resumption of rapid growth.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -
