ISSN: 1365-2826Source: Blackwell Publishing Journal Backfiles 1879-2005Topics: MedicineNotes: Ovariectomized aged rats, some of which received long-term hormone replacement with oestrogen or oestrogen plus progesterone, were evaluated for the number and size of basal forebrain cholinergic neurones, as well as relative levels of choline acetyltransferase (ChAT) and trkA mRNA, in order to determine whether effects on basal forebrain cholinergic cell survival and function correspond with differences in cognitive performance previously described. The results show that ageing combined with long-term loss of ovarian function produced substantial reductions in the levels of ChAT and trkA mRNA in the medial septum and nucleus basalis magnocellularis, relative to much younger ovariectomized controls. In contrast, no significant effects on the number or size of the cholinergic cells were detected, indicating that loss of ovarian function does not cause a loss of cholinergic neurones with age. Long-term hormone replacement had no apparent effect on the number of ChAT-positive neurones detected, and did not prevent the reductions in ChAT and trkA mRNA associated with ovariectomy and ageing. Collectively, the data suggest that ageing combined with long-term loss of ovarian function has a severe negative impact on basal forebrain cholinergic function, but not on cholinergic cell survival per se.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

ISSN: 1365-3091Source: Blackwell Publishing Journal Backfiles 1879-2005Topics: GeosciencesNotes: The particle sizes in bottom and suspended sediments from the ocean upstream for 80 km in the Hudson River Estuary were analysed. Several modes at 4, 8 and 30 μm were prevalent throughout the estuary. The average size of particles in bottom samples varied from 150 μm near the ocean to 15–20 μm in Haverstraw Bay. The bottom sediment size appears to be controlled by two components; (1) sand from the ocean and (2) the particles in the flocs.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

Published 1989Staff ViewISSN: 1365-3091Source: Blackwell Publishing Journal Backfiles 1879-2005Topics: GeosciencesNotes: The distribution of suspended particle size and concentration were measured along the Gironde Estuary, France, from the river seaward to the ocean. The suspended particle size and volume concentration were measured using in situ holography and onboard optical techniques utilizing special procedures in order to avoid floc breakage.Sediments discharged by the rivers coagulate upon encountering the very low salinities (0.2‰ of the upper estuary (confirmed with laboratory experiments), and are then transported and deposited by currents in the remainder of the estuary. This coagulation, coupled with estuarine circulation, produces a turbidity maximum which is offset between the surface and bottom waters. The floc size maximum is oceanward of the turbidity maximum and is, likewise, offset along the estuary by about 30 km. The estuary can be subdivided into the following zones: (1) coagulation; (2) hydrodynamic, landward of the null point; and (3) hydrodynamic, seaward of the null point. Initial coagulation appears to be completed in coagulation zone (1), and particles are transported and settled (with very little floc breakage and recoagulation) in zones (2) and (3) only. The floc settling velocities, coupled with estuarine circulation, control the concentration and size distributions of flocs in the water column, and eventually control the deposition of sediments.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

ISSN: 1747-6593Source: Blackwell Publishing Journal Backfiles 1879-2005Topics: Energy, Environment Protection, Nuclear Power EngineeringNotes: Two zones of a water distribution supply area receiving treated surface water were used to study the effect of booster chlorination on bacterial regrowth. In the first year of the study general patterns of bacterial regrowth were observed, and in the second year one of the areas was booster chlorinated at the outlet from a surface reservoir. In both years of the study the heterotrophic plate counts showed a seasonal pattern. In the second year there was a large increase in plate counts from mid-July to October in both of the study areas. During this period, booster chlorination was unable to prevent bacterial regrowth. The addition of chlorine to produce an initial free chlorine residual of 0.5 mg/1 resulted in a reduction in bacterial numbers, but with further retention in the distribution system bacterial regrowth occurred. There was little increase in the trihalomethane (THM) concentration following booster chlorination, but booster chlorination appeared to increase the assimilable organic carbon concentration.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -
