The heated stage allows investigation of wool dyeings to be followed in situ in real time. The photometer attachment of the microscope allows for quantitative analysis. The progress of the dyeing of wool with a fluorescent whitening agent and a fluorescent dye have been monitored in real time. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

ISSN: 1365-2494Source: Blackwell Publishing Journal Backfiles 1879-2005Topics: Agriculture, Forestry, Horticulture, Fishery, Domestic Science, NutritionNotes: An hypothesis relating to the circulation of nitrogen between soil, plants and animals in fertilized grassland is presented. It embodies the results of small-plot experiments and grazing trials on serai grassland in South Africa. Where the value of land is low in comparison with the cost of fertilizer, it is essential that the maximum response be obtained from fertilizer as well as from excretal N. The assumption that 80% of herbage N is returned as excreta, of which 25% is recovered by the grasses in the first season and 25% in the second season, appears to be in accord with liveweight data. Using average values of soil N and fertilizer recovery under local conditions, it is argued that applying 30 lb N per acre (with an initial heavy dressing) should provide higher percentage recoveries of fertilizer N than fixed annual dressings of 60 Ib N per acre. In grazing trials over five years, in which these systems are compared, the apparent recoveries of fertilizer N in animal liveweight were respectively 22.4% and 11.6%.A distinction is drawn between the initial build-up of nitrogen in circulation and the long term maintenance of a nitrogen level providing maximum recovery of fertilizer N.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

ISSN: 1089-7550Source: AIP Digital ArchiveTopics: PhysicsNotes: The typical configuration for inductive write/magnetoresistive read heads used in hard disk applications involves a shared pole (shield) between the write transducer and the read transducer. The shared pole forms the leading pole of the write portion of the head. The write track width is primarily determined by the width of the trailing pole, however, the leading pole geometry has an important influence on track-edge writing effects and, therefore, on embedded servo system performance. This effect is simulated for shared pole, trimmed pole, and, for comparison, conventional inductive head pole geometries. The merits of each geometry and impact of side writing on servo is discussed. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

By use of the finite element analysis, a number of important design parameters are examined including the transfer function and the peak shift for each biasing scheme. We show that the roll-off peak shift and linearity characteristics are dependent on the type of bias scheme.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

Published 1985Staff ViewISSN: 1089-7623Source: AIP Digital ArchiveTopics: PhysicsElectrical Engineering, Measurement and Control TechnologyNotes: A simple technique to measure simultaneously the diffusion coefficient and the partial vapor pressure of a solute in a homogeneous solid solution is presented. The analysis is based on the mathematical solution of the diffusion equation for a cylindrical system with a solute loss term at the cylinder surface. The magnitude of the loss term is proportional to the solute concentration at the surface. Three zirconium rods, one with 3 at. % Sn, one with 5 at. % Sn, and one with 4 at. % Ti, were treated in vacuum at 1875 K for 7, 5, and 2.5 h, respectively. Results from these specimens indicate that Sn and Ti both diffuse via a vacancy mechanism in β-Zr. Also, the Sn–Zr bonds appear to be much stronger than the Sn–Sn bonds, whereas the Ti–Zr bonds seem to be a little weaker than the Ti–Ti bonds.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

The impact of these new developments on traditional methods of acquiring and analyzing electroencephalographic activity requires evaluation. Ultimately, the integration of the old with the new must result in an accepted standardized methodology to be used in these investigations. In this paper, basic procedures and recent developments involved in the recording and analysis of brain electrical activity are discussed and recommendations are made, with emphasis on psychophysiological applications of these procedures.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

Published 1991Staff ViewISSN: 1089-7666Source: AIP Digital ArchiveTopics: PhysicsNotes: Long range cross-field ion beam propagation in a magnetoplasma has been studied in the high kinetic beta regime by using computer simulations and analytic techniques. A new regime of long range ballistic beam propagation has been discovered for narrow high-density beams. Ion beams with transverse size Δ(very-much-less-than)Rb, where Rb is the ion beam gyroradius and mass density nbMb(very-much-greater-than)npMp, where nb(Mb),np(Mp) are the particle density (mass) of the beam and the ambient ions can propagate ballistically across the ambient magnetic field over distances varying from a minimum of (nb/np)Rb to over an order of magnitude longer depending on the extent of initial interpenetration of the beam and the background plasma. The propagation mode is characterized by the formation of a front at the head of the beam, which forces the plasma to move sideways and prevents beam-plasma interpenetration. The system momentum is locally balanced by a corresponding displacement of the head of the beam in the opposite direction to the plasma, which is equivalent to erosion of the beam front. The physics of the interaction is distinct from the conventional magnetohydrodynamic picture and requires kinetic treatment for beam ions. Scaling laws that can be tested by laboratory and space experiments are presented.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

As the beam density is increased, the nonlinear efficiency and linear growth rate of the instability increase, and the interaction length for maximum efficiency decreases. Increasing the beam density also plays a favorable role in reducing the sensitivity of the instability to adverse velocity-spread effects.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

Published 1990Staff ViewISSN: 1089-7666Source: AIP Digital ArchiveTopics: PhysicsNotes: A linear stability analysis of the collective Raman interaction in a free-electron laser with combined planar wiggler and axial guide magnetic fields is presented. The analysis involves a perturbation of the cold-fluid model of the interaction about the single-particle trajectories in the combined external fields, and the complete dispersion equation for a monoenergetic beam is obtained. In contrast to the case of a helical wiggler field in which the interaction excites a right-hand circularly polarized wave, the interaction for a planar wiggler and an axial guide field is with an elliptically polarized wave that contains both the left- and right-hand circular components. However, the results indicate that many facets of the interaction are analogous to those found with helical wiggler. In particular, both the transverse velocity and the growth rate of the instability tend to increase near the resonance at which the Larmor and wiggle periods coincide. In addition, a negative-mass regime is found in which the axial electron velocity increases with decreasing beam energy, which drives the beam space-charge modes unstable.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

The duration of these responses, 7 and 15 days respectively, exceeded the time course of the mammalian cellular inflammatory reaction. Peak leucocyte numbers were found at 2–3 days and neutrophils, which were phagocytic, were more numerous than macrophages. Although the increase in macrophage numbers was less marked, these cells appeared more actively phagocytic than neutrophils. Cortisol injections and environmentally-induced stress caused a significant reduction in the extent of inflammatory cell infiltrates, while endotoxin significantly enhanced the response.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL:
