indica and japonica cultivars of rice (Oryza sativa L.) subjected to a drying cycle in large pots in the greenhouse. The four methods were: (i) derivation of OA from regressions of leaf relative water content (RWC) on leaf osmotic potential (OP); (ii) estimation of OA from OP of stressed plants calculated to rehydrated state; (iii) estimation of OA from OP of stressed plants that have been rehydrated; and (iv) estimation (from data used in Method 1) of OA capacity by the sustained RWC at a given OP of -3.5 MPa. Method 1 was a priori considered as the best estimate. Under relatively mild atmospheric conditions and a slow development of water deficit (first experiment), mean OA over 12 cultivars was 0.89, 0.51, and 0.72 Mpa by Methods 1, 2, and 3, respectively. Mean RWC at -3.5 Mpa was 69.3%. Significant (P ≤ 0.05) variation in OA among cultivars was observed by all methods, up to a four-fold difference in OA among cultivars (0.35-1.51 Mpa) by Method 1. Simple correlation for OA across 12 cultivars with Method 1 was significantly higher for Method 3 (r = 0.76; P = 0.04) and Method 4 (r = 0.87; P 〈 0.01) than for Method 2 (r = 0.54; P = 0.07). OA by Method 4 was better correlated with Method 3 (r = 0.80; P 〈 0.01) than with Method 2 (r = 0.67; P = 0.02). The coefficient of variation (CV) as a measure of error was greater for Method 1 (47%) and Method 2 (31%) than for Method 3 (21%) or 4 (24%). Both Methods 2 and 3 were less demanding on labor and plant materials than Methods 1 and 4. The results support the use of Method 3 (the "rehydration method") as a faster and an economical replacement for Method 1.

A microprocessor based interface unit for coupling a commercial picosecond Nd:YLF laser oscillator amplifier to external high power Nd:phosphate glass laser amplifier stages is described. The system generates charging and firing signals required for the picosecond oscillator, and also carries out the charging and firing sequence of external amplifiers for a single shot or a repetitive mode of operation. The electronics developed is simple and modular, with sufficient scope for expansion of the system, and resistant to electromagnetic interference. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

We report the discovery of Early Permian (late Asselian, ∼280–275 Ma) plant fossils and associated palynomorphs from a marine sedimentary sequence of the eastern Karakoram plate, in northern India. These specimens show affinities with those found in marine Lower Gondwana sediments of the Indian subcontinent. This supports the contention that during the Early Permian Period, the Karakoram plate was Peri-Gondwanan. It is suggested to have had an intermediate position between the Indian plate and the Qiangtang–Lhasa microcontinents, at a latitude of about 35° south.

The predictive value of cord blood IgE in the development of atopic disease was evaluated in a prospective study of two groups of infants. Total serum IgE level was ≥ 0.7 U/ml in 44.3% of the infants with positive family history of atopy and in 16.0% among those with negative family history. The level of cord blood IgE correlated significantly with the subsequent development of atopic disease in both groups. Cord blood IgE higher than 0.7 U/ml was associated with a high risk of development of atopic eczema and wheezing, 52.8% and 58.8% respectively in the groups with or without family history of atopy; compared with 13.4% and 1.1% in the groups with IgE levels less than 0.7 U/ml. Among newborns fed exclusively on breast milk for a minimum of 3 months, the incidence of eczema and wheezing was significantly lower (12%) compared with findings in the formula-fed group (32%).

Abstract. One hundred and twenty-one women with history of a previous child with atopic disease were randomly allocated during the next pregnancy to antigen avoidance or control groups. Dietary advice consisted of almost complete exclusion of milk and dairy products, egg, fish, beef and peanut throughout pregnancy and lactation. A total of 109 completed the study. Maternal antigen avoidance was associated with reduced occurrence of atopic eczema and the skin involvement was less extensive and milder. The beneficial effect was observed mainly in the breast-fed group. Among the fifty-five who completed the trial of antigen avoidance, seventeen infants developed atopic eczema, five out of thirty-five who were breast-fed and twelve out of twenty who were formula-fed. Among the offspring of fifty-four control mothers given no dietary restriction, eczema was observed in twenty-four infants, eleven out of thirty-six breast-fed and thirteen of eighteen formula-fed. Avoidance of common dietary allergens during pregnancy and lactation enhanced the preventive beneficial effect of exclusive breast feeding on the incidence of atopic eczema among infants at high risk.

The volume and pressure of a tracheal tube cuff inflated with air increases during nitrous oxide anasthesia. The study was designed to investigate the changes of tracheal tube cuff pressure during nitrous oxide anasthesia following inflation of the cuff with air or saline in 10 mongrel dogs who were anasthetised with nitrous oxide and their lungs artificially ventilated. At the end of 6 hours there was no change in cuff pressure when saline had been used for inflation, but was six times the initial pressure when air had been used. On microscopic examination of the trachea, only the air group had glandular inflammation, dilatation and destruction. Therefore, it appears that if saline is used to inflate tracheal tube cuffs, there will not be an increase in cuff volume and pressure during nitrous oxide anasthesia.

Background Mycetoma is widespread in Yemen, but has not been fully documented. Methods A prospective study of 70 patients (53 male, 17 female; from different regions of Yemen) was performed. The clinical profile of the cases was recorded in a special protocol. The diagnosis was based on clinical features, examination of grains, roentgenographic studies, and histopathology (44 cases). Results Fifty cases were diagnosed as eumycetoma and 20 as actinomycetoma. The identification of the causative species was performed in 44 cases by histopathologic studies. Among the cases of eumycetoma, Madurella mycetomatis was recognized in 27 patients, Leptosphaeria senegalensis in two, and pale-grain fungi in two. Among the cases of actinomycetoma, Streptomyces somaliensis was seen in eight patients, Streptomyces madurae in one, and Nocardia species in four. The treatment of eumycetoma patients with ketoconazole and excision in selected cases controlled the disease activity in the majority. Most of the cases of actinomycetoma were better controlled with drug therapy alone, with a combination of penicillin and cotrimoxazole, or cotrimoxazole alone. Conclusions Mycetoma is widespread in Yemen, with a higher incidence of eumycetoma and a maximum number of cases from the Hudaida region. A multicenter study is needed to evaluate the exact extent of disease.
