For quantum metrology, the use of entangled states has been discussed and demonstrated as a means of improving the signal-to-noise ratio. The complete specification of the quantum state of a system generally requires an infinite amount of information, even for simple two-level systems (qubits). ISSN: 1434-601XSource: Springer Online Journal Archives 1860-2000Topics: PhysicsNotes: Abstract We performed a microwave-optical double resonance experiment on the ground state of171Yb+ ions. About 105 particles were confined in a r.f. quadrupole trap for periods of several hours in the presence of He buffer gas. Hyperfine pumping by a pulsed dye laser was followed by microwave transitions, which we observed via changes in the ionic fluorescence intensity. The ground state hyperfine splitting has been determined togD W=12642812124.2±1.4 Hz. The ultimate line width obtained in this experiment was 33 mHz, corresponding to a lineQ of 3.8·1011. The final error ofgD W is mainly determined by the accuracy of the available frequency reference.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

A signal-to-noise ratio of 500 is obtained with 1 mW laser power and with a time constant of 10 ms; the lineshapes are investigated in detail for different demodulation phases. The signal can be used to servolock a blue dye ring laser at 467 nm on a 130Te2 resonance which serves as reference line for precision spectroscopy on single, trapped Yb+ ions at 467 nm.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

The mode frequency is derived from a measurement of the cavity's free spectral range taking into account the cavity dispersion due to phase shifts in the dielectric mirror coatings. The experimental technique is based on dual frequency modulation and is applied to determine the transition wavenumbers of several lines in130Te2 near 467 nm with an uncertainty of 2 × 10−8.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL:
