Published 1976Staff ViewISSN: 1468-2958Source: Blackwell Publishing Journal Backfiles 1879-2005Topics: Media Resources and Communication Sciences, JournalismNotes: A field experiment was conducted to explore the relationship between two known determinants of helpfulness (cost of helping and dependency of other) and predecisional communication behavior. Male undergraduates were contacted by telephone and asked to volunteer for a survey study. The caller was either very dependent or less dependent on the subject for help. The survey was described as taking 3 hours (high cost), 1 hour (moderate cost), or 20 minutes (low cost). Following the request for aid, the information seeking and information giving behavior of the subject was coded. As anticipated, the greatest information giving was elicited from non-helpers, especially among subjects in the high cost-high dependency condition. Path analysis of the data indicated a causal sequence in which information giving mediated the effects of cost on decision to help. The findings were discussed in terms of Schwartz's (1975) model of normative behavior.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

ISSN: 1468-2958Source: Blackwell Publishing Journal Backfiles 1879-2005Topics: Media Resources and Communication Sciences, JournalismNotes: The question of what promotes closer ties between nations has long been central to the study of intercultural communication. This research develops and tests a model that specifies three factors drawn from social distance and systems perspectives that are posited to have an influence on the desire for closer ties between the U.S. and Mexico. Each of the factors, perceptions of homophily, shared interests, and threats, have previously been identified as occupying central positions in the development of international relationships. The sample used to test the model was drawn from eight elite occupational groups within Mexican urban centers (N = 800). The results were supportive of the model, with quite acceptable goodness of fit measures, with a high level of variance accounted for in the dependent variable, and with support for the paths between exogenous and endogenous variables as predicted in the model.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

ISSN: 1469-8986Source: Blackwell Publishing Journal Backfiles 1879-2005Topics: MedicinePsychologyNotes: The influence of the level of prestimulus alpha phase synchronicity on the N100 component and reaction time (RT) was examined, in target auditory oddball data from 25 normal subjects. Alpha phase synchronicity is a new measure consisting (for a given stimulus presentation) of the angular or circular variance of the alpha phase at stimulus onset across the parieto-occipital sites. The lower the angular variance, the higher the phase synchronicity (the more closely in phase the alpha activity across these sites) and vice versa. Subaveraged event-related potentials (ERPs) were formed for high and low prestimulus alpha phase synchronicity stimulus presentations. N100 amplitude was significantly greater in the high than the low phase synchronicity subaverages. In addition, RT was significantly reduced in the high prestimulus alpha phase synchronicity cases. Alpha phase synchronicity reflects an aspect of brain state that influences subsequent stimulus processing.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

The incident electron energy ranges from threshold to 450 eV. The excitation functions show a broad maximum at about 85 eV and a shoulder structure near 35 eV. Near the threshold energy the formation of the excited nitrogen atoms is believed to be largely due to dissociative excitation through the repulsive part of Rydberg states of N2 that converge to the N+2(D 2Πg) ion. An abrupt increase in the slope of the excitation functions at 5 eV above threshold is suggestive of the opening up of higher-energy channels of dissociative excitation. Combining the measured optical emission cross sections with theoretical transition probabilities calculated by a Hartree–Fock procedure with configuration interaction, optical cross sections have been obtained for a number of long-wave infrared emission lines of the N atom excited by electron-impact dissociation of the N2 molecule.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

ISSN: 1540-5915Source: Blackwell Publishing Journal Backfiles 1879-2005Topics: EconomicsNotes: The final test of any management decision is its effect on the value of the firm's securities. This paper examines the subsequent impact of the publication of new product announcements on stock returns. A distinguishing feature of this presentation is the integration of decision making in the marketing and finance functional areas.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL:
