    A continuous bubble-rise-velocity (BRV) viscometry method was developed for Newtonian fluids which is based upon the remote determination of the rise velocity of a helium bubble. The bubble rise velocity was remotely determined by using a helium-leak detector to measure the rise time of a bubble passing through a constant distance. The density of the fluid was simultaneously obtained from differential pressure measurements in the bubble launch tubes. Empirical equations were developed which allow for calculation of the absolute viscosity and density from several remotely measurable variables: helium gas pressures in the bubble generation and launching system, liquid temperature, and helium concentrations at the liquid/air interface as a function of time. BRV viscometry results for highly viscous liquids (1 Pa s〈viscosity 〈40 Pa s) correlated within ±10% with data obtained with capillary or rotational viscometers. An integrated probe was conceived for the on-line monitoring of viscosity, density, temperature, and liquid level, especially in a hostile environment.

    Summary. In 92 Hindu Asians, 59% of them vegetarian, and 51 Europeans longitudinal measurements were made during pregnancy of the zinc and copper concentrations in plasma and hair together with urinary zinc excretion, as indices of their zinc and copper status. Maternal diets were assessed once at booking. Zinc intakes ranged from 3·1 to 16·9 mg/day, with average intakes least in vegetarian Hindus and most in Europeans. Average copper intakes ranged between 1·48 and 1·80 mg/day and were similar in the three patient groups. Both ethnic groups showed the pregnancy-associated fall in the plasma concentration of zinc and rise in that of copper but throughout the study Hindus had statistically significant lower levels of zinc and higher levels of copper than Europeans. Urinary zinc excretion was not only significantly lower throughout the study in Hindus than in Europeans but the increase in excretion which occurred after 20 weeks gestation was smaller. There were no ethnic differences in the zinc content of hair. Urinary zinc excretion correlated with both plasma zinc levels and dietary zinc. Mean birth-weight in the Hindus was 2912 g and 34% of infants were below the 10th centile, using the Aberdeen standards, compared with 6% of the European babies (mean birthweight 3349 g). No association was found between crude or adjusted birthweight and any of the measures of zinc or copper status in either ethnic group. The Hindus had an apparently lower average zinc status than the Europeans, but there was no evidence that this had acted as a nutritional constraint and was the cause of their slower rate of intrauterine growth.

    The reduction in acute pain perception following dextromethorphan has previously been investigated in patients undergoing general anaesthesia. This random and double-blind study examined the effects of pre-incisional oral dextromethorphan on postoperative pain and intravenous patient-controlled morphine demand in 60 day-surgery patients undergoing lower body surgery under lidocaine (1.6%−16 ml) epidural anaesthesia after receiving placebo, 60 or 90 mg dextromethorphan, 90 min pre-operatively. Postoperative pain was scored on a visual analogue scale from 1 to 10. In-hospital observation continued for 6 h and for 3 days at home; diclofenac was available throughout. Dextromethorphan-treated patients reported significantly (p 〈 0.05) less pain and sedation, and felt better. Patients who received dextromethorphan 90 mg had significantly (p 〈 0.05) lower heart and respiratory rates than those who received 60 mg. Medicated patients required half the morphine and diclofenac of placebo patients: 38% of patients who received 90 mg and 21% who received dextromethorphan 60 mg used no morphine or diclofenac whatsoever, a previously unreported finding.

    The North American mid-continent population of lesser snow geese (Anser caerulescens caerulescens) breeds in coastal areas of the Hudson Bay region. Breeding success is highly variable, particularly during recent decades. The availability of long-term data sets of weather and the breeding success of geese allowed us to determine whether climatic variables in spring and early summer (May–June) are reliable predictors of different attributes of the reproductive biology of snow geese. A large region of strong anomalous cooling in north-eastern North America has been the dominant anomalous climatic feature since the mid-1970s. The cooling which becomes established during winter persists into spring and early summer when migration, nesting and hatching of geese are occurring. Redundancy analysis (RDA) of the data sets was made to identify dominant correlations and regression relationships between climatic and goose variables. Individual goose response variables were further explored with stepwise multiple regression and bipartial regression.96.7% of year-to-year variance in the goose data was explained by the selected climatic data. The first four orthogonal axes out of seven possible axes explained 92.2% of the total variance. Date of last snow on the ground and mean daily temperature from 6 to 20 May formed the lowest and highest predictor scores, respectively. Initiation date and hatching date at the low end and total clutch size and clutch size at hatch at the high end were associated with these extremes, particularly in certain years. Days of freezing rain in May and total rainfall were correlated with nest failure. Bivariate correlation/regression showed that the most parsimonious model for nest initiation day was based on four climatic predictors, for hatching day four predictors, and for clutch size at hatch, nine predictors.Both the multiple regression analyses and the redundancy analyses confirm the high degree of predictability of goose reproductive variables from selected climatic variables. As discussed, the correlations reflect both direct and indirect effects of climate on the reproductive biology of geese. The correlations are strongest in the early season and weaken by early summer.

    Background: Cytokine-inducible leucocyte-endothelial adhesion molecules were shown to affect the postoperative inflammatory response following cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB). Soluble P-selectin (sP-selectin) is one of these molecules. We investigated the correlation between plasma sP-selectin levels and the intra- and postoperative course in children undergoing CPB. Methods: Serial blood samples of 13 patients were collected preoperatively upon initiation of CPB and seven times postoperatively. Plasma was recovered immediately and frozen at – 70°C until use. Circulating soluble selectin molecules were measured with a sandwich enzyme-linked immunoabsorbent assay technique. Results: The significant post-CPB changes in sP-selectins plasma levels were associated with patient characteristics, operative variables and postoperative course. sP-selectin levels correlated significantly with surgery time, aortic cross-clamping time and inotropic support, as well as with the postoperative Pediatric Risk of Mortality score, hypotension and tachycardia. Conclusions: A relation between CPB-induced mediators and both early and late clinical effects is suggested. The up-regulation and expression of sP-selectin indicate neutrophil activation as a possible mechanism for the increase, and inhibiting it may reduce the inflammatory response associated with CPB.
