Microhabitat data was collected by underwater observation using an equal effort habitat sampling design; HSC were constructed using nonparametric tolerance limits. Transferability of previously published HSC to the West Branch Farmington River was poor; only 1 of 13 HSC tested was considered transferable. The HSC developed for the West Branch Farmington River were tested for transferability to the East Branch Westfield River, Massachusetts. First, a composite suitability index (SI) score was calculated using the source HSC for each occupied and unoccupied location in the Westfield River. Then, χ2-tests were used to determine if optimal or suitable locations were occupied in greater proportion than usable or unsuitable locations. Composite SI scores based on total depth, mean velocity, and cover were not transferable, but composite SI scores based only on total depth and mean velocity were. A multivariate profile analysis was also used to test for transferability. In each test, only total depth, fish depth, and mean velocity HSC were successfully transferred. Transferability of depth and velocity HSC between rivers shows promise for applications to similar systems where brown trout occur.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

Published 1985Staff ViewISSN: 1095-8649Source: Blackwell Publishing Journal Backfiles 1879-2005Topics: BiologyNotes: We measured serum calcium concentrations in mature white suckers and bluegills collected from clear-water Wisconsin lakes before spawning. The mean serum calcium concentration in female white suckers was greater in a circumneutral lake than in two naturally acidic lakes, whereas mean concentrations in fish from the two acidic lakes did not differ. Serum calcium concentrations in female bluegills from four acidic and four circumneutral lakes varied among lakes, but no relation was apparent between serum calcium level and either lake pH or waterborne calcium. In contrast, a strong negative correlation between mean serum calcium concentration and relative density of bluegill populations in the eight lakes was observed, suggesting that serum calcium levels in this species are affected by density-dependent factors. Mean serum calcium concentrations were substantially lower in mature male bluegills than in females, which is the norm prior to spawning. We hypothesized that serum calcium levels in female white suckers are depressed by exposure to pH 6.0 or less in calcium-poor waters. The utility of serum calcium concentrations, measured before spawning, as a measure of pH-related stress on populations of white suckers and other synchronous spawners merits further study. However, this measure is probably not useful for evaluating acid stress on fish species such as the bluegill, which have asynchronous reproductive cycles.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

The reactions of the primary alkyl halides produced the corresponding phosphonium cationic compounds, whereas the secondary and tertiary halides underwent elimination to form the corresponding olefins and the protonated form of 1. Based on 1H and 13C NMR studies, it appears that elimination is exclusively trans, favoring the Saytzeff product. It was also observed that this reaction is enhanced by the solvent CH3CN. The X-ray crystal structure of [Me(I)] I is also reported, featuring a transannular distance of 2.773 Å (2) facilitated by a rather wide average equatorial MeN-P-NMe bond angle of 113.1 (2)°. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.Additional Material: 2 Ill.Type of Medium: Electronic Resource -

IIWhereas o-bromobenzyldiorganophosphines react with n-BuLi in ether to give o-metalated products only, o-chlorobenzyldiorganophosphines leads to α-metalation and/or nucleophilic substitution at phosphorus, depending on the size of the substituents at phosphorus and the acidity of the CH2-protons. Under standard conditions o-ClC6H4CH2P(t-Bu)2 does not react with n-BuLi. A preliminary structure of [ (t-Bu)2]2 determined by X-ray diffraction reveals the large steric requirements of the t-butyl groups. Additional Material: 1 Ill.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL:
