Published 1995Staff ViewISSN: 1089-7550Source: AIP Digital ArchiveTopics: PhysicsNotes: The nucleation and emission of dislocations from the crack tip under mode II loading are analyzed by the molecular-dynamics method in which the Finnis–Sinclair potential has been used. A suitable atom lattice configuration is employed to allow one to fully analyze the nucleation, emission, dissociation, and pileup of the dislocations. The calculated results show that although the pure mode II loading is applied, the crack tip generally exhibits a combined mode. The stress distributions before the dislocation emission are in agreement with the elasticity solution, but are not after the emission. The critical stress intensity factor corresponding to the dislocation nucleation KIIe is dependent on the loading rate K(overdot)II. The separations of a pair of partial dislocations and the full dislocations are also dependent on the loading rate. When the first partial dislocation is blocked, a pileup of dislocations can be set up. It is also found that the dislocation can move at subsonic wave speed (less than the shear wave speed) or at transonic speed (greater than the shear wave speed but less than the longitudinal wave speed) depending on the loading rate, but at the longitudinal wave speed which just corresponds to K(overdot)II=1.15 MPa (square root of)m/ps for copper, the atom lattice breaks down. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

ISSN: 1095-8649Source: Blackwell Publishing Journal Backfiles 1879-2005Topics: BiologyNotes: Based on bottom trawl surveys in autumn 2000 and spring 2001, the fish assemblage structure in the southern Yellow Sea and the continental shelf of the East China Sea was analysed. Four groups of fishes were identified for each season by the two-way indicator species analysis (TWIA). Although seasonal migration caused a slight difference in fish assemblages between autumn and spring, two major groups of fishes, corresponding to the Yellow Sea and East China Sea were identified. Inshore and offshore groups were subsequently separated. Changes in water depth may be most important in the separation of the groups in the offshore waters of the East China Sea. Temperature affected the groupings between north and south, particularly in the central part of the Yellow Sea. Here, the cold water mass affected the species composition which was low in diversity and different from the other areas.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -
