ISSN: 1468-2494Source: Blackwell Publishing Journal Backfiles 1879-2005Topics: MedicineNotes: It has been proposed that oxygen free radicals are involved in skin aging. This paper describes a new method for the evaluation of oxygen free radical scavenging by cosmetic products. It is based on the measurement, by gas chromatography, of ethylene produced during the oxidation of methionine by the hydroxyl radical. OH· is produced by an iron catalyzed superoxide-driven Fenton reaction in which superoxide is obtained by photochemical oxygen reduction. The cosmetic is applied, together with methionine, riboflavine, NADH, FeCl3 and EDTA, on a glass microfibre filter and submitted to UVA exposure through a quartz cell. Ethylene is then measured from aliquots of the atmosphere inside the cell. Catalase or Desferal completely inhibits ethylene production. SOD or high concentrations of hydroxyl radical scavengers (Mannitol, DMSO etc.) afford a partial protection. Thus the efficiency of O2−·, H2O2 and OH· scavengers and iron chelators can be measured. The main advantage of this test is that it is performed in conditions which simulate skin during UV exposure (e.g. air and UV exposed thin layer). Furthermore, as it is non-invasive, it can also be applied to human skin in vivo.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

The Si-TaSi2 material is an ideal candidate for large area field emission array cathodes due to the large density of TaSi2 fibers incorporated into the Si matrix, the high melting point of the TaSi2 material, the ease with which single-crystal large diameter (2.5 cm) material can be fabricated, and the promise of integrability of the field emission array with conventional Si technology through the use of epitaxial Si layers grown on the cathode backplane.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

Inter- and intra-species variations in mineral composition were found among all the muscle tissues investigated. Muscle-to-muscle variation was found to be highly significant for all but one of the minerals analyzed in the avian (K) and bovine (P) muscle tissues and all but three (Fe, Ca, P) in the porcine tissues. The mineral content of three major meat products and four meat additives are reported. The least variability in tissue mineral content was found when the data was expressed on a dry weight, fat free basis.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

ISSN: 1436-2449Source: Springer Online Journal Archives 1860-2000Topics: Chemistry and PharmacologyMechanical Engineering, Materials Science, Production Engineering, Mining and Metallurgy, Traffic Engineering, Precision MechanicsPhysicsNotes: Summary Water molecules sorbed in pure poly(vinyl alcohol) and poly(vinyl pyrrolidone), as well as in their blends is found to be only partially crystallizable. The fraction of noncrystalizable water is shown to vary with the blend composition. Such variation is explained by the newly proposed Tg-regulation effect when the swollen blend materials is cooled down. A part of the sorbed water cannot crystallize due to the fact that during cooling the amorphous polmer-water phase is frozen before the water crystallization temperature is reached.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

The spectrum is rich of isolated and blended H2O lines. For their identification and in order to determine the physical parameters of the circumstellar envelope, we have constructed a model which treats radiative transfer, chemical exchange and photodissociation reactions, and various heating and cooling processes in a consistent manner. By fitting the observed line fluxes and using stellar parameters based upon the Hipparcos distance, we derived a mass-loss rate of M = 1 10-6 M⊙ yr-1 which is close to the value 6 10-7 M⊙ yr-1 previously derived for W Hya, another oxygen-rich AGB star.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -
