X-ray diffraction studies of boron carbide thin films on Si(111) exhibited characteristic microcrystalline diffraction lines. Soft x-ray emission spectroscopy was used to verify that the local electronic structure and composition of each sample corresponded to a homogeneous solid solution boron carbide phase.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

Published 1991Staff ViewISSN: 1089-7550Source: AIP Digital ArchiveTopics: PhysicsNotes: The Si L2,3 emission spectra of silicon crystals implanted with Co at doses of (1–8) × 1017 Co/cm2 have been examined using soft-x-ray-emission (SXE) spectroscopy. At the lowest dose, the spectra are little modified from that of crystalline Si, indicating that only a small fraction of Si is in the form of silicides within the probe depth of SXE spectroscopy. For higher doses and implant profiles with Co extending to the surface, there is clear evidence for ordered CoSi2 combined with richer Co phases, but little evidence for pure Si or for ordered regions of CoSi.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

The measurements have suggested that the "vacuum heating" is the main heating process for the hot electrons with high energies. The energy of the vacuum-heated hot electrons has been found to be higher than the prediction from the scaling law of resonance absorption. Particle-in-cell simulations have confirmed that the hot electrons are mainly generated by the vacuum heating process under certain experimental conditions. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

ISSN: 1089-7674Source: AIP Digital ArchiveTopics: PhysicsNotes: The interaction of modest, femtosecond (fs) laser pulses with solid targets is studied with particle-in-cell (PIC) simulations. A bi-temperature distribution of hot electrons is found. The first hot electron temperature can be attributed to the resonance absorption of the laser field, whereas the second hot electron temperature is identified to be due to the combined acceleration by the static electric field in front of the target and by the laser induced oscillating electric field in the thin plasma layer between the vacuum and the target. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

ISSN: 1089-7623Source: AIP Digital ArchiveTopics: PhysicsElectrical Engineering, Measurement and Control TechnologyNotes: The U7A bending magnet toroidal grating monochromator (TGM) beamline has been converted into a spherical grating monochromator (SGM) type, without constructing any new vacuum components. That is, the mirror, slit, and grating chambers have been recycled. The inherited optical arrangement and the recycling concept prevented the use of "standard'' SGM Kirkpatrick-Baez collecting and focusing mirrors at the front end. We show that this modification is not a serious detriment to the optical properties of the resulting beamline. Specifically, the resolution is completely unaffected and the throughput is approximately 2/3 of the "standard'' SGM value. The flux and photon energy resolution of the U7A beamline throughout its 200–1000 eV operating photon energy range will be presented. Three end stations are being constructed for this beamline, featuring soft x-ray absorption and photoemission chambers optimized for operation in the carbon K-, oxygen K-, and transition metal L-edge ranges. Two of these end stations will be preceded by refocusing mirrors that will focus the soft x-rays to 〈1 mm spot size onto their samples. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -
