Summary A number of cut-off processes are investigated, with the Alpine region in most cases lying at the margins of these upper lows. Our aim was to determine whether the thermal front parameter (TFP) can be used to objectively define the areas of bad weather from analysis charts and prognostic charts. An attempt is made to formulate two synoptic “guidelines”, for the eastern Alpine region, on front-sides and northern margins of upper lows, into objective synoptic rules.

    Description / Table of Contents:
Summary Using the power spectrum analysis the series of the monthly mean values, of the standardized monthly mean values, of daily values of the temperatures and heights of the main pressure surfaces and of some secondary pressure surfaces above Vienna are examined for periodicities. Then the presence of persistence of Markov-Type is tested in the series. It does not come out in the analysis. In the aerological series of Vienna periods exist, then lengths of which comprise a relatively large range. Especially the 12.8month period, the periods of 8 to 9 months, the 30.3day period and the short periods with a length of 2 to 5 days stand out from the red-noise-spectrum. The 26month oscillation appearing in several meteorological parameters in many territories cannot be proved in this material.
    Notes:
