ISSN: 1365-2494Source: Blackwell Publishing Journal Backfiles 1879-2005Topics: Agriculture, Forestry, Horticulture, Fishery, Domestic Science, NutritionNotes: The milk yields obtained from 845 herd-years within the ICI Recorded Farms Scheme have been correlated, by multiple regression analysis, with the N fertilizer supplied to the grassland, the quantities of concentrates fed and the stocking rates. The large quantity of data gave highly significant correlations which indicated that, over the whole period, the supply of an extra 1 kg N from fertilizer was associated with an average extra yield of 9·9 1 milk. 4·9 1 were associated with the extra N independently of any simultaneous changes in either stocking rate or concentrate feeding, and 4-5 1 were ascribable to a simultaneous increase in stocking rate. There was a substantial variation in the ‘milk yield per kg N’ response from year to year, but the average value over 6 years agreed closely with that observed in the period 1949–52.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

Structural analysis by x-ray and neutron diffraction has shown that the mechanical process initially reduces the crystallite size of both elements as a function of the milling time. The diffraction data show that the bcc iron phase is subsequently consumed, due to progressive incorporation of the iron atoms into the fcc copper matrix. The Mössbauer spectra of a specimen MA for 16 h has a broad magnetic profile typical of a Fe-Cu extended solid solution, with some evidence of two local environments of the iron atoms and a small admixture of the γ-Fe. The annealing of these MA treated specimens effects a decomposition of the extended solid solution into FCC copper and both α- and γ-iron allotropes. This decomposition process is discussed in relation to spinodal decomposition and to nucleation-and-growth mechanisms.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

Published 1996Staff ViewISSN: 1089-7550Source: AIP Digital ArchiveTopics: PhysicsNotes: We have studied the nature of the solid-state amorphization induced by mechanical deformation (ball milling) in the case of the Fe2Ti phase [mechanical milling (MM)] and that of the iron and titanium phases mixed in the atomic proportion Fe67Ti33 [mechanical alloying (MA)]. Neutron and x-ray diffraction, combined with Mössbauer spectroscopy at room temperature, of samples mechanically treated for different times indicate that the MM of the Fe2Ti compound leads to a highly fragmented and disordered (micro)crystalline phase. No changes of the Fe2Ti (MgZn2-type) structure are observed in the mechanically and thermally treated Fe2Ti alloys. Conversely, the MA of the pure elements shows a partial amorphization reaction. The chemical short-range order observed in the neutron-diffraction data indicates that a true alloying of the elements occurs. In addition, the thermograms of the MA specimens are different from those of the equivalent MM products. In fact, the phases observed after annealing at 600 °C of the specimens MA 2 and 4 h are a mixture of α-iron and of disordered Fe–Ti intermetallic. A fully amorphous structure is obtained after annealing the samples MA treated for 8 and 16 h. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

The defect centers were identified as electron traps lying below the surface state conduction band, each with an active area of approximately 20 nm2. An areal ion beam dose of 1×1013 cm−2 was sufficiently low that no significant surface sputtering was observed by topographic imaging which suggests that the features observed by STS are not related to gross physical damage. Spatial STS measurements also allow a lateral profile of a focused ion beam patterned line to be determined accurately, thereby setting a resolution limit on the direct write technique for nanoscale lithography. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

Published 2001Staff ViewISSN: 1460-9568Source: Blackwell Publishing Journal Backfiles 1879-2005Topics: MedicineNotes: The distinctive features of axons and dendrites divide most neurons into two compartments. This polarity is fundamental to the ability of most neurons to integrate synaptic signals and transmit action potentials. It is not known, however, if the polarity of neurons in the adult mammalian nervous system is fixed or plastic. Following axotomy, some distal dendrites of neck motoneurons in the adult cat give rise to unusual processes that, at a light microscopic level, resemble axons (Rose, P.K. & Odlozinski, M., J. Comp. Neurol., 1998, 390, 392). The goal of the present experiments was to characterize these unusual processes using well-established ultrastructural and molecular criteria that differentiate dendrites and axons. These processes were immunoreactive for growth-associated protein-43 (GAP-43), a protein that is normally confined to axons. In contrast, immunoreactivity for a protein that is widely used as a marker for dendrites, microtubule-associated protein (MAP)-2a/b, could not be detected in the unusual distal arborizations. At the electron microscopic level, unusual distal processes contained dense collections of neurofilaments and were frequently myelinated. These molecular and structural characteristics are typical of axons and suggest that the polarity of adult neurons in the mammalian nervous system can be disrupted by axotomy. If this transformation in neuronal polarity is common to other types of neurons, axon-like processes emerging from distal dendrites may represent a mechanism for replacing connections lost due to injury. Alternatively, the connections formed by these axons may be aberrant and therefore maladaptive.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

Published 2002Staff ViewISSN: 1600-0560Source: Blackwell Publishing Journal Backfiles 1879-2005Topics: MedicineNotes: Background: Bullous pemphigoid (BP) is an immune-mediated blistering disease, usually characterized immunopathologically by the linear deposition of IgG and C3 along the basement membrane zone (BMZ) of skin. However, positive deposition of C3 but negative staining for IgG on direct immunofluorescence (DIF) studies has been noted in some patients. Methods: Twelve patients known to have BP but with absence of staining for IgG were included in this study. Frozen sections of skin specimens from the 12 patients were subjected to IgG DIF, as well as a sandwich double antibody method of staining for IgG, IgG subclasses, and light chains. Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) using commercially available human IgG subclasses was used to analyze the subclass restriction of FITC-labeled antihuman IgG conjugates. Results: Of the 12 skin specimens with positive C3 and negative IgG on DIF, nine were positive for IgG with the double antibody sandwich method. In addition, all 12 specimens had positive linear staining for the subclass IgG4 along the BMZ with this method. There was no IgG light chain restriction. Two commercially obtained antihuman IgG conjugates, both commonly used in our laboratory for DIF testing, were analyzed for separate IgG subclass specificity by ELISA. Both conjugates showed high reactivity to IgG1 and IgG3 with less reactivity to IgG2 and IgG4.Conclusion: These results suggest that the following factors contribute to false-negative staining for IgG on DIF in some BP patients: (i): subthreshold IgG in skin specimens; (ii) limited reactivity of commercial antihuman IgG conjugates to the IgG4 subclass; and (iii) decreased sensitivity of DIF compared with double antibody methods for the detection of IgG. The use of sandwich double antibody immunofluorescence methods to test for IgG and/or IgG subclasses may be helpful in definitively diagnosing BP in patients with negative IgG and positive C3 staining on DIF.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

Published 1999Staff ViewISSN: 1399-3054Source: Blackwell Publishing Journal Backfiles 1879-2005Topics: BiologyNotes: ABA analog structure-function relationships were determined by testing an array of 19 different ABA analogs on 1-year-old clonal white spruce (Picea glauca [Moench.] Voss) raised from somatic embryos. The contribution of specific structural features to analog activity was determined from the relative effect of aeroponically applied analog solutions (10−3M) on seedling gas exchange. Seedling transpiration rate (E) and carbon assimilation rate (A) were measured continuously during treatment by means of a whole plant cuvette system. The analogs were racemic about the C-1′ chiral center and were derived from changes imposed on six regions of the ABA molecule. The activity of optically pure (+)-S-ABA and (−)-R-ABA were also determined. Analog activity was reduced by changing the oxidation level at C-1 from the carboxylic acid. The ring C-2′, C-3′ double bond was important but not essential to activity. The activity lost through changes in ring structure and C-1 oxidation level was, in many cases, almost fully restored by replacing the C-4, C-5 double bond with a triple bond. Therefore, analogs with a triple bond at C-4 were more active than their equivalents with a dienoic side chain. Fluorination of the C-7′ methyl caused a relatively moderate reduction in analog activity. Truncation of C-1 and C-2 from the side chain reduced activity to near zero. The unnatural (−)-ABA enantiomer was inactive.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

Methods: A double-blind, multicentre study was undertaken in 2 9 6 patients with endoscopically proven duodenal ulcer to compare the efficacy and safety of lansoprazole 15, 30 or 60 mg with placebo. Ulcer healing was documented by endoscopy at 2 and 4 weeks; patients whose ulcers healed after 4 weeks were followed for up to 6 months post-treatment. Results: Four-week healing rates of 89.4% 91.7% and 89.9% were obtained with lansoprazole 15, 30 and 60 mg, respectively, compared with 46.1 % on placebo (P 〈 0.001). All three doses of lansoprazole produced rapid symptom relief, although patients taking 60 mg lansoprazole required fewer antacids than did those taking 15 mg. At 6 months, the percentages of patients healed were 45.3%, 40.0% and 38.4% in the lansoprazole 15, 30 and 60 mg dosage groups, respectively, and 2 5.3 % for the placebo group. No significant adverse events were documented during the period of this trial. Conclusion: Lansoprazole is an effective and safe treatment for duodenal ulcer and the 15 mg dose is as effective as 30 or 60 mg.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

After cessation of treatment, secretory activity, as measured by intragastric pH, basal acid output and stimulated acid output, returned to baseline in 2 to 4 days without any overshoot, indicating the absence of acid rebound. Lansoprazole’s terminal disposition half-life was 1.11 h. Mean pH and serum gastrin returned to baseline with half-lives of 22 and 19 h, respectively.〈section xml:id="abs1-4"〉〈title type="main"〉Conclusions:Lansoprazole 30 mg daily significantly increases mean intragastric pH without producing acid rebound. The aim of this study was to compare lansoprazole to a standard dose of ranitidine in the treatment of patients with reflux oesophagitis. Methods: Two hundred and forty-seven patients with erosive oesophagitis were randomly assigned to 8 weeks of treatment with either 30 mg lansoprazole once daily or 150 mg ranitidine twice daily. Results: Two hundred and forty-two patients were included in the analysis. Lansoprazole (30 mg) daily, healed oesophagitis in 92.1% of patients after 8 weeks of treatment. This was significantly superior to 150 mg ranitidine b.d.s. which healed oesophagitis in 69.9% of patients (P 〈 0.001). Relief of reflux symptoms was superior with lansoprazole to that with ranitidine. Both lansoprazole and ranitidine were well tolerated with no serious drug-related adverse events noted. Conclusion: Lansoprazole, 30 mg once daily, is highly effective and safe in the short-term treatment of erosive oesophagitis.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -
