Abstract Both synchrotron radiation-based techniques (XANES) and transmission electron microscopy (EDX, EELS) are used to draw a comparison of antiwear and thermal films generated from neutral and basic ZDDP salts. Antiwear films were created in a pin-on-flat wear machine and the wear debris was collected. The analysis of the tribofilms did not show any substantial difference between neutral and basic ZDDPs. The wear scar diameter and the P and S chemical environment in the tribofilm were very similar. The chemical analysis of the wear debris revealed differences in the chemical composition. Wear debris from basic ZDDP seems to be mostly composed either of unreacted ZDDP or of a linkage isomer of ZDDP (LI-ZDDP), and zinc polyphosphate; whereas the wear debris as far as neutral ZDDP is concerned seems to be exclusively composed of zinc polyphosphate (and sulphur species). More iron was also detected in the wear debris with basic ZDDP – possibly an indication of the iron content of the tribofilm. Differences in chemical structure could also be detected in the thermal films. While neutral ZDDP reacted with the surface to form polyphosphates at 150°C, the same reaction products were obtained with basic ZDDP at 175°C. The concentration of ZDDP in oil is thought to be the main parameter to explain the differences in the thermal film formation.

The propagation of a growing fatigue crack can be effectively retarded by heating a spot near the crack tip (under zero stress condition). Spot heating to a subcritical temperature and at a precise location modifies the crack growth behaviour in a way, more or less, similar to specimens subjected to an overload spike. It is observed that the magnitude of spot heating induced crack growth retardation increases with increase in spot temperature. It is also observed that the crack growth behaviour is influenced by the position of the heating spot and there exists an optimum position of hot spot that produces maximum retardation in fatigue crack growth rate. The plastic zone length due to spot heating has been estimated using experimental data. It is found that the plastic zone length due to spot heating increases exponentially with increase in spot temperature. The Wheeler model for crack growth retardation has been modified by introducing a plastic zone correction factor λ. The values of λ and the shaping exponent, m, in the Wheeler model have been obtained for different spot heating temperatures.

Objective To study a geographically defined population of women exposed to a drug-related risk for human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), together with carefully matched neighbourhood controls, in order to examine (1) the proportion of different groups having cervical cytopathology screening; (2) the association between HIV infection and cervical intraepithelial neoplasia; (3) the independent effect of CD4+ lymphocyte count and duration of HIV infection; and (4) the correspondence between cervical cytopathology and colposcopically directed biopsy.Design A population-based study.Subjects All women domiciled in Lothians with the following characteristics: between 1983 and 1987 they had a history of injection drug use or a seropositive partner with a history of injection drug use; they had a pregnancy after that exposure where their serostatus was known. In addition, neighbourhood controls were identified by computer matching for the following criteria—post-code sector, housing deprivation score, age, parity, pregnancy outcome, ethnic group, year of pregnancy, smoking.Main outcome measures Search was carried out for the cervical smear nearest in time to the index pregnancy end date, providing serostatus was known at that time. All identified smears were assessed by a cytopathologist without knowledge of clinical information, study group or serostatus. Results Of 376 women, appropriate cervical smears were identified for 336. The proportions screened in the different groups were similar. There were more abnormal smears in the seropositive group than in the drug-related seronegative (P 〈 0.01) or the neighbourhood control groups (P 〈 0.001). HIV-infected women with abnormal smears had lower CD4+lymphocyte counts (P 〈 0.0005). There was a reasonable correspondence between cytopathological classification and histological grading, and this was of similar strength in cases and controls (weighted kappa 0.72, 0.74).Conclusions There is a definite relation between HIV infection and cervical intraepithelial neoplasia. This is related to immune depletion but whether this is the sole mechanism for the association is unclear.

Objective To examine the suggestion, based on theoretical considerations and case reports, that pregnancy decreases survival time after AIDS (acquired immunodeficiency syndrome).Design A total population study in Edinburgh.Setting A city with a moderately high prevalence of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection in women.Subjects AIDS has been diagnosed in 22 women, five of whom had a pregnancy.Main outcome measures Clinical characteristics, disease presentation, lymphocyte markers, pregnancy outcome, subsequent progress and survival time. Results Pregnancy was not obviously associated with a difference in clinical findings. The mean survival time for the three women with a pregnancy who died was 24 months and for the 11 women without a pregnancy it was 15 months. (P= 0.63 log rank test). Conclusions The clinical presentation, severity of the illness and laboratory findings were not obviously different in pregnancy. All three women who had Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia for the first time in pregnancy survived this initial episode. Survival time was not obviously reduced by the conjunction of pregnancy with AIDS.

These experiments and complementary electronic structure calculations seek to probe the early dissociation dynamics of N2O4 excited in the strong 186 nm ultraviolet absorption band. Laser photons of 199.7, 203, and 205 nm are used to dissociate N2O4 molecules expanded in a free jet. The emission from the dissociating molecules is dispersed in a spectrometer and collected with an optical multichannel analyzer (OMA). We observe a strong progression in ν3, the N–N stretching mode, consistent with electronic structure calculations and a previous observation of N–N bond fission leading to NO2 photoproducts in this band. We also observe emission to combination bands in ν4, the torsion, and ν5, the out-of-phase antisymmetric NO2 stretch, which we attribute to vibronic coupling to a σσ* excited state configuration. Analysis of our data allows for an assignment of the torsional frequency of N2O4. Around 200 nm nitric acid, nitromethane, and N2O4 all exhibit a similar absorption to an adiabatic surface that changes electronic character from πnb,OπNO2* at short O2N–R (R=CH3, OH, NO2) internuclear distances to nσ* at extended internuclear distances. We compare our present emission spectra of N2O4 with previous emission experiments on nitromethane to understand how the character of the Franck–Condon region of the excited states in these two molecules differ. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Abstract: Various cryoprotective agents [glycerol, dimethylsulphoxide, polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP 40)], all dissolved in Krebs phosphate medium were tested for their effects on cytoplasmic preservation in oligodendroglia isolated from bovine white matter stored at -30°C. Of these agents, only PVP 40 (15% wt/vol) produced a significant improvement in recovery of oligodendroglial cytoplasm compared with untreated frozen brain. Cells isolated after PVP 40 pretreatment contained levels of membrane-bound enzymes similar to those found in cells isolated from fresh white matter. There was, however, some loss of soluble protein. Studies of galactocerebroside synthesis in neuronal and oligodendroglial perikarya have shown that the glial cells contain ceramide galactosyltransferase at much higher specific activity than the neurones.

Background In order to understand the medical decision taken during the intaial visit of a new asthmatic patient, a group experts designed an expert system which provides conclusions about severity, precipiting factors and treatment. Rules for atopy and the assesment of allergic factors have been discussed and implementedin the expert system. Conclusion about severity have been yet validated using an appropriate methodology. Objective The aim of this study was to investigate a sample of 471 patients according to conclusions regarding atopy. Methods A total of 471 cases report forms (CRf) was filled in for adult asthmatic outpatients, seen for the first time in our clinic without emergency situtations. Data of each CRF were used by the expert systemto draw conclusion. The expert systsm discerns threee patterns fir atopy, yes, possible or no. The variables known to reflect different features according to the classification of asthma as atopic or not have been studied. The Variables used in the rules for atopy, obviously linked to the conclusion, were not completed. For many medical problem no unique objectives solution esixts and this is why a group of patients with possible atomy was introduced. Results Patients with atopy had less severe asthama (P=0.01), a better FEV1 value (P=0.0007)and showed their first symptoms of asthama erlier (P=0.00001)than patients without atopy. Conclusion The Characteristics of the group studied here are consistent with the literature. This could be considered as an indirect validation of the expert system. Moreover, Patients with possible atopy show intermediate findings for these variables and it is possible to suggest a‘dose-effect’relationship.
