The presence of diabetic retinopathy and nephropathy in patients with pancreatitic diabetes without a family history of diabetes mellitus suggests that these patients have “primary” diabetes mellitus unmasked by the pancreatitis. The occurrence of diabetic microangiopathy is significantly correlated with the duration of diabetes. The frequency of these diabetic complications seems to increase when there is a family history of diabetes in patients whose pancreatitis is simultaneous with or precedes the onset of diabetes. The majority of patients with diabetic microangiopathy were on insulin therapy, but the need for insulin treatment is an indication of the severity of the diabetes, rather than the insulin being a causative factor of the microangiopathy. The frequency of respiratory distress was 31% in infants of diabetic mothers, 2.6% in infants of prediabetic mothers, and 0.46% in all infants born at the same hospital during the same period. Neonatal mortality during the first month of life was 14% in the infants of diabetic mothers and 3.5% in the infants of prediabetic mothers. Both these rates for neonatal mortality are higher than those reported for live births in the United States and Minnesota between 1950 and 1965. Of the deaths in both groups combined, 77% occurred in the first 3 days of life in infants diagnosed as having respiratory distress. Birth weight and prematurity, gestational age, and toxemia were associated with an increased frequency of respiratory distress in the infants of prediabetic mothers, whereas gestational age, mode of delivery, and weight gain during pregnancy were so associated in infants of insulin-dependent diabetic mothers.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

In patients with SLE the mean fasting SBA concentration was 9.6±1.4μmol/L; in normal subjects the concentration was 2.9±0.6μmol/L (P〈0.01). In patients with SLE, mean gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase (GGTP) concentration was 31.5 ±5.9 mU/ml versus 10.05±1.1 mU/ml in controls (P〈0.01).The bromsulphalein (BSP) excretion test, 45 minutes after injection, was 6.8±1% in SLE patients versus 2.8±0.4% in controls (P〈0.02). No significant difference was found between these two groups of subjects with respect to leucine aminopeptidase (LAP), alkaline phosphatase (AlPh), glutamic-oxalacetic transaminase (SGOT), glutamicpyruvic transaminase (SGPT), bilirubin serum rates. SBA rate was abnormal in 50% of the SLE patients; GGTP rate and the BSP excretion test were abnormal in 38% and 27% respectively. Our findings show the presence of an actual liver impairment in SLE patients, significantly demonstrated by fasting SBA concentration, GGTP rate and BSP excretion test. Production, processing and analysis of cosmic dust analogues in the laboratory represents a powerful tool to interpret astronomical observations and to contribute to the solution of puzzling problems which are so far unsolved. In the present paper we summarize recent results obtained in our laboratory on carbon-based and silicate materials able to simulate various types of cosmic grains.
