: Decision parameters affecting combined use of effluent discharges and surface flows and ground water available at Gillespie Dam on the Gila River in Arizona are identified and analyzed. Hydrologic, economic, legal, and institutional parameters are considered separately and in combination. The interrelationships of irrigation subsystems, water use functions, institutional involvement, economic and legal constraints are illustrated. Recent hydrologic studies indicate that the natural flow of the Gila River will increase with the discharge of Phoenix sewage effluent and then there will be a drastic decline when the Palo Verde Nuclear Generating Station commences in 1985. Competition for any increases in effluent discharges and surface flows could be ameliorated through the combined efforts of existing or reorganized entities resulting in sharing of costs and benefits. The analysis leads to recommendations concerning joint use of facilities, proration of fixed and variable costs, and creation of a mutual water company.

Principal component analysis has been used in this study to describe the associations among 17 traits measured on progenies developed from matings of two adapted pearl millet inbreds with three exotic pearl millets. The exotic parents were a primitive I and race, a weedy relative, and a wild relative. The first three components were calculated for these matings and the associations defined. Correlations between these components and grain yield and growth rate were also determined. The first principal component described a hybrid index in five of the six matings, and a number of other complexes of traits were determined by this component or the other two. Some were common to several matings. The first three components accounted for only 50–60% of the total variability; thus no strong association of trans was found that would hinder recombination of parental types to select agronomically desirable segregates with high grain yield or growth rate.

Three currently available pressure infusor devices, based on three different principles, were tested to see if the pressure reading on the infusor manometer corresponds to the pressure generated in the infusion system. Each device was tested in two ways. First, the pressure generated in the infusion system was measured when the infusor bag pressure was maintained at 300 mmHg while the infusion bag was emptied in aliquots of 50 ml. Second, the pressures in the infusor bag required to maintain a pressure of 300 mmHg were measured as the infusion bag was emptied stepwise. The results reveal surprisingly large discrepancies between the pressure registered on the infusor manometer and the actual pressure generated in the fluid, which are not due to manometer inaccuracy. The degree of discrepancy depends on the amount of fluid that remains in the infusion bag and, when the infusor manometer shows a pressure of 300 mmHg, pressure in the fluid can be as much as 170 mmHg above or 200 mmHg below this value. Furthermore, it was impossible to maintain a pressure of 300 mmHg in the infusion system using one of the devices despite the fact that 100 ml fluid remained. The clinical significance of these findings is discussed.

    Notes:
Nitric oxide is a potent endogenous vasodilator involved in the homeostatic control of systemic blood pressure. It has also recently been demonstrated that when inhaled in low concentrations it acts as a specific pulmonary vasodilator. The concept of inhaled nitric oxide as a form of therapy is almost an anathema to anaesthetists. However, nitric oxide is being used increasingly for the treatment of persistent pulmonary hypertension of the neonate and in the adult respiratory distress syndrome. One major limitation to its frequent and widespread use is the problem of measuring the concentration of nitric oxide delivered. Currently, the gold standard technique used is chemiluminesence. However, the equipment required is costly and can be difficult to use. If the use of inhaled nitric oxide increases and it develops a therapeutic role then its applications may be limited only to centres which can afford such equipment. Others may be prevented from using a potentially valuable therapy due to lack of a controlled delivery system for nitric oxide. An inexpensive, simple alternative technique to chemiluminesence is described, which will allow most intensive care units the freedom to use inhaled nitric oxide if necessary.

A serious disease of cardamom in East New Britain Province of Papua New Guinea was shown by pathogenicity and biochemical tests to be caused by Erwinia chrysanthemi. The bacterium was repeatedly isolated from blackened roots, soft discoloured rhizome tissue and rhizosphere soil, but not from field soil in the immediate neighbourhood of diseased plants.

A procedure is outlined which allows consideration of both objective and subjective indicators to establish priorities in plan implementation of water resource development. The objective procedure utilizes stepwise multiple discriminant analysis to predict community performance regarding planned project implementation, based on previous project implementation in the Northeast. The subjective procedure incorporates prior probabilities developed by the planner, based on observation and experience gained through the planning process. The proposed analysis could eliminate waste through better allocation of planning funds to implementation studies exhibiting higher probability of early implementation.
