ISSN: 1433-0474Keywords: Schlüsselwörter Lymphadenitis colli ; Atypische Mykobakterien ; Antibiotische Therapie ; Inkomplette Operation ; Key words Lymphadenitis colli ; Atypical mycobacterial infection ; Antibiotic treatment ; Incomplete excisionSource: Springer Online Journal Archives 1860-2000Topics: MedicineDescription / Table of Contents: Summary The treatment of choice of atypical mycobacterial cervical lymphadenitis is complete surgical excision of all involved lymph nodes. However, a high recurrence rate of infection following incomplete surgery has been described. We report on 3 children with atypical mycobacterial cervical lymphadenitis who underwent incomplete surgery of lymph nodes in order to preserve cranial nerves and blood vessels. After surgery, the patients were treated with clarithromycin alone or in combination with protionamid and rifabutin over a period of 6 weeks to 3 months. All 3 patients were completely cured with no recurrence of lymphadenitis. Discussion: In case of an infiltrative character of a cervical lymphadenitis caused by atypical mycobacteria, surgical resection is often incomplete. A postoperative antibiotic treatment might prevent recurrence of lymphadenitis in these cases. Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

ISSN: 1433-0474Keywords: Schlüsselwörter Bluttransfusion ; Malaria ; Fieber unklarer Genese ; Malariatherapie ; Key words Blood-transfusion ; Fever of unknown origin ; Malaria therapySource: Springer Online Journal Archives 1860-2000Topics: MedicineDescription / Table of Contents: Summary An 18 month old boy developed septic fever 14 days after surgery not responding to antibiotic treatment. The cause was found to be a transfusion transmitted infection with plasmodium falciparum. The patient completely recovered after anti-malaria treatment with quinine and halofantrine. Discussion: In cases of unclear septic illness up to 3 month after a blood transfusion, a transfusion malaria should be included in the differential diagnosis. The mortality rate is 15%. Early treatment can prevent a lethal outcome. Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

Published 1997Staff ViewISSN: 1432-119XSource: Springer Online Journal Archives 1860-2000Topics: BiologyMedicineNotes: Abstract Histones are the major protein constituents of the chromatin of eukaryotic cell nuclei. This group of basic proteins is extremely conserved throughout evolution and includes five classes termed H1, H2A, H2B, H3and H4. In mammals, each of these classes except H4 is subdivided into several subtypes. The most divergent class of histones is the H1 protein family, which consists of seven different subtypes, termed H1.1–H1.5, H1°, and H1t. The subtypes H1.2 and H1.4 are found in most somatic cell nuclei, whereas H1° is found in several differentiated tissues, and H1t is restricted to mammalian testicular cells. Similarly, core histone subtypes replacing the major forms of H2A, H2B or H3 have been described. Biochemical analysis of protein and RNA from different tissues and cell lines demonstrates varied patterns of expression of individual histone subtype genes. Moreover, antibodies against specific histone subtypes and in situ hybridization with subtype-specific probes indicate that the expression of histone subtype genes is in several cases modulated in a tissue-specific manner. This is particularly evident at the different stages of spermatogenesis when chromatin undergoes substantial reorganization, which finally results in the highly condensed state of chromatin of the mature sperm head.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

ISSN: 1433-0350Keywords: Key words Venous sinus thrombosis ; Dural arteriovenous fistula ; Protein S deficiencySource: Springer Online Journal Archives 1860-2000Topics: MedicineNotes: Abstract A 12-month-old infant presented with cerebral seizures and neurological deficits. MRI scan of the brain and angiography showed massive cerebral venous sinus thrombosis complicated by a dural arteriovenous fistula. Subsequent clotting analysis revealed a protein S deficiency. Screening for inherited coagulation inhibitor deficiency is recommended in children with unexplained or atypical thrombotic events.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -
