    A clonal strain of mammalian cells with increased resistance to acute heat shock at 46° was compared with the heat-sensitive parental line from which it was derived for possible differences that might account for this acquired resistance. Studies on synchronized populations of the two cell strains did not reveal any differential heat sensitivities in the various parts of the cell cycle (G1, S, G2) within either the sensitive or resistant populations. During thermal stress both cell types exhibited marked inhibition of ability to incorporate isotopically labeled precursors into macromolecular RNA, DNA, and protein.However, significant differences were observed between the sensitive and resistant cells in the amount of leakage of materials from the two cell types during heat stress and in their relative rates of recovery after stress. Sensitive cells pre-labeled with 3H-uridine released considerably more acid-soluble (cold, 5% TCA) label-containing materials during heat stress than did pre-labeled resistant cells. This differential release of uridine-containing materials was not paralleled by a generalized differential leakiness to other compounds. In addition, the resistant cells were found to regain the capacity to synthesize vital macromolecules sooner, and at initially faster rates, than the sensitive cells after stress.These results suggest that permeability changes causing decreased leakage of uridine-containing materials during heat stress combined with accelerated rates of recovery of synthesis of essential macromolecules after stress may be important cellular mechanisms in resistance to heat shock.

    Summary: Clinical correlates associated with urinary albumin excretion (UAE) in non-insulin dependent diabetes (NIDDM) are less well known than in insulin dependent diabetes (IDDM). We therefore performed a cross sectional study examining the relationships of clinical risk factors and diabetic complications with UAE in 950 NIDDM patients. the UAE status was classified into the following categories: (i) no albuminuria (〈20 μmg/min), (ii) microalbuminuria (20–200 μg/min); and (iii) overt albuminuria (〉200 μg/min). Univariate and miltivariate analyses were initially performed evaluating the associations between clinical risk factors and UAE. Univariate and multivariate analyses were then performed examining the relationships between UAE and the diabetic complications (retinopathy, neuropathy and cardiovascular disease). Using multivariate logistic regression analyses controlling for diabetes duration, glycosylated haemoglobin, gender and race, the most significant predictors of microalbuminuria and overt albuminuria were systolic hypertension, increased body mass index (BMI), decreased high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol, insulin use and smoking pack years. Univariate and multivariate analyses evaluating the associations between UAE and diabetic complications revealed that UAE was a strong predictor of retinopathy (odds ratio [OR]=1.31:95% confidence interval [CI]=1.05,1.66), neuropathy (OR=1.47; CI=1.19,19.83), and cardiovascular diseases (OR=1.28; CI=1.05,1.52). Thus, in the present study increases in UAE were associated with retinopathy, neuropathy and cardiovascular disease. Urinary albumin excretion may therefore be a marker of diffuse vascular disease in NIDDM. Aggressive treatment of smoking, cholesterol and hypertension may not only diminish UAE but may also play a significant role in decreasing the other NIDDM vascular complications.

    x La2/3+yTiO3-δ perovskite (with δ≤0.5) were deposited by the laser ablation technique from Li0.33La0.56TiO3 targets. Their growth onto MgO substrateswas studied as a function of the oxygen pressure. For films grown in vacuum (10-6 mbar), a La0.63TiO2.5 composition was obtained, meaning that Ti3+ alone is present in the films, while Li ions are not incorporated under these conditions. This material shows good electric conductivity (ρ=500 mΩ cm). By contrast, insulating films with a Li0.1La0.70TiO3 composition corresponding to the Ti4+ species were obtained at high oxygen pressures (〉0.05 mbar). For all conditions, textured films were grown with different orientations depending on the temperature and the oxygen pressure.

    Summary. A modified classical penalty method for solving a Dirichlet boundary value problem is presented. This new fictitious domain penalty method eliminates the traditional need of generating a complex computation grid in the case of irregular domains. It is based on the fact that one can expand the boundary measure under the chosen basis which leads to a fast, approximate calculation of boundary integral. The compact support and orthonormality of the basis are essential for representing the boundary measure numerically, and therefore for implementing this methodology.

    Abstract Repeated measures designs have been widely employed in psychological experimentation, however, such designs have rarely been analyzed by means of permutation procedures. In the present paper certain aspects of hypothesis tests ina particular repeated measures design (one non-repeated factor (A) and one repeated factor (B) withK subjects per level ofA) were investigated by means of permutation rather than sampling processes. The empirical size and power of certain normal theoryF-tests obtained under permutation were compared to their nominal normal theory values. Data sets were established in which various combinations of kurtosis of subject means and intra-subject variance heterogeneity existed in order that their effect upon the agreement of these two models could be ascertained. The results indicated that except in cases of high intra-subject variance heterogeneity, the usualF-tests onB andAB exhibited approximately the same size and power characteristics whether based upon a permutation or normal theory sampling basis.

    Abstract Estimates of test size (probability of Type I error) were obtained for several specific repeated measures designs. Estimates were presented for configurations where the underlying covariance matrices exhibited varying degrees of heterogeneity. Conventional variance ratios were employed as basic statistics in order to produce estimates of size for a conventional test, an ε-adjusted test, and ε-adjusted test and a conservative test. Indices for empirical distributions of two estimators of ε, a measure of covariance heterogeneity, were also provided.

    Abstract Two different linear models are presented for the four-dimensional classification system in which correlations exist between certain pairs of observations. Except for the assumption of correlated observations, classical assumptions associated with classification systems are made. The models considered are modifications of those which underlie the split-plot design and the split-split-plot design. In the first model the correlations between observations of the levels of one dimension are all set equal toρ. In the second model the observations of the levels of one dimension are assumed correlated to degreeρ 1, whereas the observations of a second dimension are correlated to degreeρ 2. Analyses for the two models and tests of hypotheses for various parameters are indicated.

    The paper investigates the accuracy and numerical stability of a class of wavelet Galerkin formulations on irregular domains. The method of numerical boundary measures is based upon a domain embedding strategy in which the irregular domain of interest is embedded in a larger domain having regular geometry. One advantage of the domain embedding method is that the boundary conditions on the larger, regular domain can be enforced in a straightforward manner, and the solution procedure can exploit the highly structured form of the resulting governing equations. The defining characteristic of this method is that the calculation of integrals along the irregular boundary are carried out using recently derived numerical boundary measures. In addition, the coercive bilinear forms characterizing the boundary value problem of interest must be calculated when restricted to the actual domain. In the case of wavelet Galerkin formulations, this calculation is accomplished with the three term connection coefficients that characterize the numerical boundary measure. The numerical stability and accuracy of the domain embedding procedure is compared to a newly developed wavelet-based finite element formulation.
