An inert substrate coated with a thin film thermoelectric material is increased and decreased in temperature at a predetermined rate set by program control while maintaining a constant temperature gradient across the sample. A fully automated computer data acquisition system is used to control instrumentation, measurements, and data storage. This approach is particularly useful for studying the transition from amorphous to crystalline structure in the semiconducting materials. Thin-film thermoelectric materials were prepared by magnetron sputtering and rf glow discharge. Parameters S and σ were measured as a function of temperature, histology, type, and amount of doping. Materials studied had the compositions Bi2Te3, GeTe, Ge80Te20, PbTe, and S.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

The design of a data acquisition system around a laptop computer contains many challenges not encountered in conventional PC-based systems. The focus of this article is on those aspects of the peripheral electronics that are implemented specifically to minimize power consumption in a battery-operated environment, take advantage of the particular features of our laptop, and provide the greatest possible signal processing flexibility and capability. The use of this system in an experiment to detect bearing defects by acquiring and processing the signal from an accelerometer is described. The application employs a vibration envelope detection scheme along with the full flexibility designed into the peripheral electronics to provide a quite sophisticated tool for monitoring the health of a bearing.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

Published 1985Staff ViewISSN: 1089-7550Source: AIP Digital ArchiveTopics: PhysicsNotes: We have studied the dipole-allowed nd3/2-nf5/2 and the dipole-forbidden nd3/2-ng7/2 transitions of sodium in the presence of thermal ions for n=15–17. Although the cross sections for the relevant ion–Rydberg atom collisons are too small to influence the observed transitions, these microwave resonance measurements indicate that there is a remarkable influence of even very low densities, 105 cm−3, of ions on the atoms. For instance, the d-g transition can be easily driven with a single photon, and the d-f and d-g transitions are shifted and broadened. Furthermore, the thermal sodium ions destroy the interference fringes obtained with the Ramsey method of separated oscillatory fields. Although these results are incompatible with reasonable estimates of ion-atom collision cross sections, they may be explained quantitatively in terms of the time-averaged charge of the ions.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL:
