An elliptic multipole wiggler beamline will be constructed for inelastic scattering (Compton scattering) experiments at the SPring-8. This beamline will provide monochromatic x rays with linear or elliptic polarization in the energy range of 100–300 keV. It will extend the application of the Compton scattering experiments to the study of materials science. An outline of the beamline is given. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Eu compounds at or near the strongly magnetic (J=7/2) Eu2+ valence should enter a mixed valent Eu2+δ (||δ||〈1) nonmagnetic state at sufficiently high pressures. We have performed high pressure (P≤250 kbars) and low temperature (T≥4.2 or 77 K) resistivity measurements on semiconducting EuO and metallic Eu(AuxPd1−x)2Si2 (0≤x≤1). For EuO our results show a nonlinear gap variation above 130 kbar with a hybridization gap and ferromagnetism (Tc ≥200 K) being maintained out to 250 kbars. In the Eu(Au,Pd)2Si2 system the cooperative valence transition can be traced to higher pressures with increasing Au content. In the pure Au the magnetic order persists out to 250 kbars. A common theme in both systems is the substantial pressure-induced enhancement of the magnetic ordering temperature precursive to the eventual large Eu valence change.

A high-resolution Compton spectrometer has been installed for 29.5-keV incident x rays from a vertical wiggler inserted in the 2.5-GeV storage ring of the Photon Factory at Tsukuba. This spectrometer consists of bent-crystal monochromator, a Cauchois-type bent-crystal analyzer, and an imaging plate as a position sensitive detector. The overall momentum resolution is 0.084 a.u. for the incident x-ray energy of 29.5 keV. High-resolution Compton profile measurements on Al, a quasicrystal Al-Li-Cu, and solid and liquid phase of Li are shown to demonstrate the performance of this spectrometer.

Recent developments of the insertion devices have made it possible to utilize intense hard x rays for precise Compton-profile measurements. A Compton profile of Si (110), which is measured using 29.5-keV synchrotron-radiation x rays, is shown as an example of a precise measurement having a momentum resolution of 0.084 a.u., the best resolution ever achieved. A promising plan is presented on magnetic electron Compton-profile measurements using circularly polarized 60-keV x rays from a newly developed multipole wiggler in the 6-GeV accumulation ring at KEK as an elliptically polarized source.

A reduced oxygen atmosphere during melt processing turned out to be critical for the fabrication of NdBa2Cu3Oy (Nd123) superconductors possessing high superconducting transition temperature (Tc) with a sharp transition and large critical current density (Jc) at 77 K. In a dc magnetization measurement, Nd123 superconductors melt processed in flowing a mixture gas of 1% O2 in Ar exhibited the Tc of about 95 K and the transition width of 1.5 K with the applied field of 10 Oe. A four-probe measurement showed the zero resistive transition Tc (R=0) of about 95 K. An anomalous peak effect in the magnetization hysteresis (M-H) loops was commonly observed and lead to large magnetic Jc of 2×104 A/cm2 at 77 K and 2 T for the applied field H parallel to the c axis of a sample (H(parallel)c). This achievement is attributable to a preferential formation of high Tc phase (x〈0.1) among the Nd1+xBa2−xCu3Oy solid solutions in a reduced oxygen atmosphere.

Bulk (Sm0.5Eu0.5)Ba2Cu3O7−δ superconductors were grown isothermally and with a vertical thermal gradient of −5 °C/cm in air. The crystals grown at a large growth rate under the thermal gradient exhibited a high-Tc value of 95 K and a plateau in the Jc–B curve at 1–4 T at 77 K with postannealing in Ar. We found that the substitution of Ba by rare-earth (RE) elements could be suppressed with a large growth rate. The narrow range of RE–Ba solid solution was attributed to the fast crystallization rate of RE1+xBa2−xCu3O7−δ with low-x values. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

We prepared (Nd, Eu, Gd)Ba2Cu3Oy samples with various Nd: Eu: Gd ratios in the rare earth site. It was found that the three elements contributed to flux pinning in different ways. Nd mainly enhanced flux pinning at low magnetic fields, Eu controlled the second peak position and the irreversibility field, while Gd slightly enhanced intermediate and high-field Jc values. Scaling analyses for the pinning force density as a function of the reduced field h=Ha/Hirr (where Hirr denote the irreversibility field) showed that the highest peak was achieved at h=0.56. This value is even higher than the theoretically predicted highest value of h=0.5. We also show that a maximum flux pinning can be achieved in the whole magnetic field when very fine secondary phase particles are dispersed in a superconducting (Nd, Eu, Gd)Ba2Cu3Oy matrix with an optimum Nd: Eu: Gd ratio. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

An x-ray spectrometer has been designed and constructed for Compton scattering measurements using 40–70 keV x-rays from an ellipsoid multipole wiggler (EMPW) installed in the accumulation ring of the National Laboratory for High Energy Physics at Tsukuba. The spectrometer has four sets of a Cauchois-type energy analyzer and an imaging plate, which are arranged on the surface of a cone and share a scattering angle of 160°. In each energy-analyzing system, to increase signal to noise ratio a set of vertical and horizontal slits are inserted between the analyzer and the imaging plate. A resolution of 0.13 a.u. in terms of electron momentum was achieved. A Compton profile of a vanadium single crystal was measured with an integrated counting rate of 400 counts/s.

The beamline NE-1A, constructed at the accumulation ring of the National Laboratory for High Energy Physics in Tsukuba has brought a remarkable progress in the magnetic Compton-profile experiment. Circularly polarized hard x rays emitted from an elliptical multipole wiggler are monochromatized and focused with a quasidoubly-bent Si monochromator. We report the methodological aspect of recent successful magnetic Compton-profile experiments with high statistical accuracy achieved by using a Ge solid-state detector having thirteen segments.

Background : Gastric mucus usually induces artefacts during endoscopic ultrasonography.Aim : To investigate the effectiveness of pre-medication with the proteolytic enzyme, pronase, before endoscopic ultrasonography. Methods : Out-patients scheduled for endoscopic ultrasonography were randomly assigned to oral pre-medication with the anti-foam agent, dimethylpolysiloxane, alone (treatment A; n = 29), with dimethylpolysiloxane plus sodium bicarbonate (treatment B; n = 29) or with dimethylpolysiloxane, sodium bicarbonate and pronase (treatment C; n = 29). All drinks were given about 10 min before the start of the procedure. After insertion of the endoscope, endoscopists recorded visibility scores before the procedure, imaging scores at endoscopic ultrasonography and the numbers of high-echo spots in the gastric cavity and on the gastric wall surface after the procedure. Results : Pre-medication with pronase (treatment C) significantly reduced (both at P 〈 0.05) the visibility score (score 4, 46%) in comparison with that obtained for pre-medication without pronase (10% for both treatments A and B). Treatment with pronase significantly reduced (both at P 〈 0.05) the endoscopic ultrasonography score in the gastric cavity (score 4, 34%) in comparison with that found for treatments A (7%) and B (0%). It also significantly reduced (P 〈 0.05) the endoscopic ultrasonography score on the gastric wall surface (score 4, 14%) in comparison with that observed for treatment A (3%). The numbers of high-echo spots in the gastric cavity and on the gastric wall surface were significantly less (both at P 〈 0.001) for pre-medication with pronase (treatment C) than for pre-medication with treatments A and B. There were no complications associated with the solutions. Conclusions : Pre-treatment with pronase reduced the artefacts during endoscopic ultrasonography.
