    The GEO 600 gravitational wave detector is currently under construction in Germany. To ensure that the detector sensitivity is not limited by seismic noise above 50 Hz a significant degree of seismic isolation has to be provided for each test mass. To achieve this level of isolation each test mass, which will be made from fused silica (mass ∼14 kg), will be suspended as the final stage of a triple pendulum from an isolation stack consisting of layers of stainless steel masses and graphite loaded silicone rubber. Extending from the stack will be three cantilever springs supporting an upper mass from which a double pendulum stage will be suspended. This double pendulum will incorporate cantilever springs in the upper stage in order to enhance the vertical isolation, and will use fused silica fibers in the lower pendulum stage in order to minimize thermal noise from the pendulum modes. The expected performance from this arrangement of stacks, vertical spring stages, and double pendulums should achieve our goals for seismic isolation. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes:
    The investigation of the servo control of the position of the bottom mass in a balanced two-stage pendulum vibration isolation system is reported. Experimental results for a simple prototype system and predictions based on a model presented in this paper are in good agreement. The application of such a system to a high-sensitivity laser interferometric gravity wave detector is discussed.

    Seismic isolation is a necessity for many delicate experiments such as those designed to search for gravitational radiation. One method of providing a significant amount of isolation has been the use of multiple stage stacks of alternating layers of dense material (metal) and elastic material (rubber). In this work finite element analysis is used to model stack systems in a relatively realistic way, allowing the importance of cross coupling of degrees of freedom to be evaluated. It becomes clear that care has to be taken with the geometrical construction in order to achieve the isolation predicted by simple dynamical analysis.

    Experimental 120-turn thin-film inductive heads have been built. The key features of this head are the 6-μm pitch helical coils and an omega-shaped, planar yoke structure having dual easy axes. Hardbaked photoresist insulator layers are used to encapsulate the yoke and to smooth out the wafer surface topography. Micro-Kerr studies show that the easy axis remains in the transverse direction in the yokes after multiple anneals. The P1/G/P2 is 3.8/0.3/3.8 μm, and the yoke length is close to 1 mm. The helical coils were built with a novel process that combines yoke/stud coplating and a photoresist planarization process. The coil resistance is 68Ω and the inductance is 5.5 μH. The yoke saturates at 5 mA. The heads were tested over disks having Mrt of 2.5 memu/cm2 and Hc of 1500 Oe. The write threshold current is 5.3 mA (peak-to-peak) and the overwrite is 30 dB. The isolated pulse amplitude Vpp is 10.3 μV/(TwV), where track width Tw is in μm and the linear velocity V in m/s.

    Extensive dynamic six degree-of-freedom modeling of a multiple pendulum suspension has been developed for application to the design and analysis of the planned suspensions for the main mirrors in GEO 600, the German/United Kingdom gravitational wave detector. Two models were developed independently, and results from both were compared with the experiment to verify their applicability. The models have been applied to investigate the optimization of parameters for achieving the desired modal behavior. In addition, the levels of cross coupling between degrees of freedom due to mechanical misalignments have been investigated and shown to be within acceptable limits. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    In this article we describe aspects of the suspension system for each of the main optics (test masses) in the GEO 600 interferometric gravitational wave detector currently under construction in Germany. In particular we describe the triple pendulum, which is a key aspect of the overall system, discuss the details of the mechanical design, present transfer functions of the isolation performance, and display examples of impulse responses for the local control used to damp the low frequency modes of the triple pendulum. This local control is achieved using co-located sensing and feedback at the highest mass of the triple pendulum, providing a significant attenuation of local control noise to the fused silica test mass, the lowest mass of the triple pendulum. In order to enhance the vertical isolation, the triple pendulum will incorporate two stages of cantilever springs, and fused silica fibers will be used in the lowest pendulum stage in order to minimize thermal noise from the pendulum modes. It is expected that the thermal noise associated with the internal modes of the fused silica test mass (mass ∼6 kg) will set the sensitivity limit for GEO 600 from 50 to ∼200 Hz. The measured performance from individual stages of the prototype suspension system indicates that a seismic noise level which is a factor ∼3 lower than this thermal noise level at 50 Hz can be achieved. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    We present a description of the prototype interferometric gravitational wave detector at Glasgow. The detector, which has been under development for a number of years, consists of two perpendicular 10-m-long high finesse Fabry–Perot cavities formed between test masses hung as pendulums and is illuminated with a cw argon ion laser. The differential displacement sensitivity of the detector is ∼7×10−19 m/(square root of)Hz from 500 Hz → 3 kHz and is close to being limited by photoelectron shot noise in the detected photocurrent. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

    Physiological homeostatic mechanisms and interventions by anaesthetists attempt to moderate excessive change in many biological variables during anaesthesia. These mechanisms may have fast or slow response times. This study describes how mean arterial blood pressure changes with time and how the change is dependent upon the pre-existing blood pressure. The results demonstrate the ‘regression towards the mean’ concept; low arterial blood pressures increase and high pressures decrease. The data are the result of all interactions and have been used to produce an ‘envelope’ into which 80% of all changes fall. Alarm systems using this envelope could warn of excessive changes that occur within short time intervals.

    Isolations from pyrethrums (Chrysanthemum coccineum Willd.) affected by a slow-wilt disease demonstrated that there was a consistent association with a Cephalosporium sp. Inoculation of seedling pyrethrums followed by infection, the development of symptoms and re-isolation, showed that the organism was pathogenic.A randomized comparison of plants vegetatively propagated from inoculated and non-inoculated stocks of pyrethrum demonstrated that the vigour of infected plants, as measured by the numbers of flowering heads produced, was reduced and also showed that the disease could spread laterally from infected to healthy plants.The fungus in the Cephalosporium stage was similar to C. chrysanthemi but it also produced, sparsely in culture and more frequently on autoclaved pyrethrum stems, pycnidia referable to the genus Deuteroplioma.

    The relative effectiveness on plaque removal and gingival health of three brushes containing 6: 10 nylon filaments of varying filament diameter and tuft density was evaluated in an un-supervised double-blind, cross-over trial conducted on twenty subjects. The two brushes with filaments of 0.28 mm diameter were greatly superior to the brush containing filaments of 0.14 mm diameter. Although the brush of fine diameter filaments contained twice and thrice as many filaments as the others this did not compensate for the narrower filament. Differences between the two brushes with the broader filaments were not significant and increasing the number of tuffs by 40 per cent did not confer any benefits. Many of the brushes with the finer filaments showed considerable wear after two weeks use and there was almost universal condemnation of these by the subjects taking part in the trial.

    A new virus named Nootka lupine vein-clearing virus (NLVCV) was isolated from Lupinus nootkatensis plants that were confined to a relatively small area in the Talkeetna mountains of south-central Alaska. Annual surveys (2000–03) consistently found leaf symptoms of pronounced vein clearing and mosaic on 3- to 4-week-old plants in late June. Spherical particles ≈30 nm in diameter were isolated from these leaves. Virions contained a single-stranded RNA of ≈4·0–4·2 kb and one species of capsid protein estimated to be ≈40 kDa. The double-stranded RNA profile from naturally infected leaves consisted of three major bands ≈4·2, 1·9 and 1·5 kbp. Protein extractions from either sap or virions of diseased plants reacted to polyclonal antiserum made against the virions in Western blot assays. A predicted PCR product ≈500 bp was synthesized from virion RNA using primers specific to the carmovirus RNA-dependent RNA polymerase (RDRP) gene. The nucleotide sequence of the amplified DNA did not match any known virus, but contained short regions of identity to several carmoviruses. Only species belonging to the Fabaceae were susceptible to NLVCV by mechanical inoculation. Based on dsRNA profile, size of virion RNA genome and capsid protein, and similarity of the RDRP gene to that of other carmoviruses, it is suggested that NLVCV is a member of the family Tombusviridae, and tentatively of the genus Carmovirus. As the host range, RDRP gene and dsRNA profile of NLVCV are different from those of known viruses, this is a newly described plant virus.
