    Notes:
Summary Recent studies suggest that lower survival among gravid squamate reptiles may be partially the result of decreased locomotor ability during gestation. In this study, we compared the speed and endurance of female garter snakes (Thamnophis marcianus), before, during, and after pregnancy. Gravid snakes had significantly lower locomotor performance than did non-gravid females, and performance varied among stages of gestation, reaching a minimum 0–6 weeks prior to parturition. Both number of offspring and relative clutch mass were inversely correlated with locomotor performance; as females increased these traits, locomotor ability decreased. If reduced locomotor performance results in greater risk of predation and/or lowered foraging ability, then natural selection (operating via differential mortality or feeding rates of gravid females) may result in important constraints on both clutch size and relative clutch mass in squamates.

Abstract Objective: The single-dose and steady-state pharmacokinetics of the HMG CoA reductase inhibitor pravastatin and its two metabolites, SQ 31 906 and SQ 31 945, were evaluated in 12 hemodialysis patients. A single 20-mg i.v. dose was employed, followed by daily oral dosing of 20 mg over four hemodialysis intervals. Results: No statistical differences in the pharmacokinetics of pravastatin or SQ 31 906 were evident when comparing the first and last days of oral dosing with pravastatin. The pharmacokinetic parameters of pravastatin and SQ 31 906 were similar to those of healthy volunteers. SQ 31 945, the inactive polar metabolite, did accumulate in dialysis patients, as evidenced by an accumulation index of 1.7 ± 1.0. Although metabolic clearance is the predominant mode of elimination of pravastatin, hemodialysis clearances of pravastatin, SQ 31 906 and SQ 31 945 will contribute to total body clearance since dialytic clearance ranged from 40 to 80 ml · min−1. Conclusion: Pravastatin can be safely administered in the usual dosages to subjects with renal failure on hemodialysis and no change in dosing is necessary.

Abstract A small-angle intensity fluctuation spectrometer has been constructed and used to measure the width Γ of the Rayleigh component of 514.5-nm light scattered from liquid helium. The techniques utilized to maximize the weak scattered signal are described. Measurements of Γ at small angles (65〈θ 〈 104 mrad) as a function of temperature (2.6〈T〈4.3 K) and pressure (0.27〈P〈1.42 MPa) agree with predictions based on hydrodynamic theory.
