ISSN: 1089-7550Source: AIP Digital ArchiveTopics: PhysicsNotes: Different anisotropy components originating from various mechanisms in dc-magnetron sputtered Tb39Fe70 films have been identified. The inverse magnetostrictive anisotropy component was determined by comparing the anisotropy of Tb30Fe70 films when they were removed from their substrates and when they were still attached to their substrates. The single-ion anisotropy component was then derived by subtracting the pair-ordering anisotropy, which was determined as the anisotropy of Gd21Fe79 films which had been removed from their substrates, from the anisotropy of Tb30Fe70 films which had been removed from their substrates. By this method, single-ion and inverse magnetostrictive anisotropies were found to contribute 30–60% and 30–65%, depending on argon sputtering pressure, of the total anisotropy, respectively. Pair-ordering was responsible for less than 10% of the total anisotropy in dc-magnetron sputtered Tb30Fe70 films. Thermal stability of each anisotropy component was studied by annealing films when still attached to their substrates. The anisotropies of films, which had been annealed and removed from their substrates were then compared with those of films, which had also been removed from their substrates but without annealing. Effects of Ar sputtering pressure on the thermal stability of anisotropy were also investigated. Better thermal stability was found in single-ion and pair-ordering anisotropy than in magnetostrictive anisotropy. Films deposited at lower argon pressures show better thermal stability of single-ion and pair-ordering anisotropy than those deposited at higher argon sputtering pressures.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

Published 1996Staff ViewISSN: 1077-3118Source: AIP Digital ArchiveTopics: PhysicsNotes: A microscopic chemical analysis of BiSrCaCuO (BSCCO) 2212 single crystals was performed with an unprecedented combination of high (submicron) lateral resolution and high energy resolution (100 meV or better). These performances, achieved with imaging synchrotron spectromicroscopy, enabled us to detect in a very small fraction of the investigated specimens, morphological and chemical inhomogeneities. Specifically, we found deviations from stoichiometry in the surface Sr content which have a subtle effect on the chemical environment of at least one other element, Ca. The different chemical environment was found to influence surface chemical reactions. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

The eradication rates vary greatly from country to country and from region to region.〈section xml:id="abs1-2"〉〈title type="main"〉Aim:To assess the efficacy at eradicating H. pylori of 1-week regimens containing three medications: omeprazole (O) or colloidal bismuth subcitrate (B), furazolidone (F) or metronidazole (M), and amoxicillin (A) or clarithromycin (C).〈section xml:id="abs1-3"〉〈title type="main"〉Methods:A multicentre study involving 20 hospitals in different regions of China. A total of 892 patients with H. pylori-positive non-ulcer dyspepsia or healed duodenal ulcer confirmed by endoscopy were recruited to receive, randomly, one of four regimens: OMC, OFC, OFA, and BFC, b.d. for 7 days. 13C-urea breath test was performed 4–8 weeks after completion of treatment.〈section xml:id="abs1-4"〉〈title type="main"〉Results:The eradication rates with per protocol/intention-to-treat analyses were: OMC (n=217/219) 66%/65%; OFC (n=227/229) 69%/69%; OFA (n=223/225) 87%/86%; and BFC (n=214/219) 80%/78%. The eradication rate (per protocol analysis) in duodenal ulcer (79%) was higher than that in non-ulcer dyspepsia (73%, P=0.033). Patient compliance was good. The adverse events of the four regimens were mild, and mainly gastrointestinal.〈section xml:id="abs1-5"〉〈title type="main"〉Conclusions:The omeprazole, furazolidine and amoxicillin regimen achieves a high H. pylori eradication rate in different geographical regions of China.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

To investigate devices built from these complex materials we applied element-sensitive photoemission electron microscopy (PEEM). Information about the chemical composition of the imaged sample can be obtained by PEEM via tuning the photon energy to X-ray absorption edges. To apply spectromicroscopy we acquired microscopic images using photon energies near and at the edges. Such images give the lateral distribution of a specific element. Microspectroscopy is performed by recording the intensity of the true secondary electrons in selected spots during a sweep of the photon energy. The main aim of our work was to observe oxygen-related defects and changes in the composition affecting the physical properties of the materials. Therefore, we applied both methods to micro-patterned devices using soft-X-ray synchrotron radiation and found that small local defects and chemical differences can be easily detected. Such defects and chemical differences are quite critical to the physical properties of the devices, since they simulate spurious effects thus influencing the reliability of the devices.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

An all-optical computing device is proposed to perform incoherent digital operations, including the NAND, NOR, and XOR gates. Instead of using interferometer-based methods, making use of self-generating noise gratings and the erasure of them by another beam in two photorefractive self-pumped phase conjugators (SPPC), the device is able to process mutually incoherent as well as mutually coherent inputs. Changing the orientations of two polarizers and a photorefractive crystal, we are able to perform incoherent parallel NAND, NOR, and XOR operations with this proposed setup.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

Notes: Summary Nine cases in the literature and seven patients in our series with hipache due to avascular necrosis of the femoral head have been reviewed. The onset of symptoms is related to pregnancy. The high adenocortical activity during pregnancy is invoked as a possible explanation of pregnancy avascular necrosis of the femoral head. Maternal parathyroid gland hyperplasia and the elevated parathyroid hormone during pregnancy may play an additional adverse effect on bones. Mechanical stress, due to a difficult labour or excessive weight gain during the last trimester of pregnancy, may be another aetiological factor.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL:
