Published 2005Staff ViewISSN: 1600-0560Source: Blackwell Publishing Journal Backfiles 1879-2005Topics: MedicineNotes: Malignant mesothelioma presenting as a primary umbilical tumor is not reported in the English literature, to our knowledge. We present a 63-year-old woman with a painless and initially skin colored nodule in the umbilical area, which within one month became erythematous. The performed biopsy revealed an infiltrating glandular and ductal proliferation involving the dermis, subcutaneous fat and underlying skeletal muscle embedded in a loose and mucinous stroma. The tumor cells were of medium size with round to oval nuclei and prominent nucleoli. Mitoses were conspicuous. The tumor cells showed a positive reaction for kermix, EMA, CK5/6, calretinin and CK7 and a negative reaction for CK20, CEA, Ber-Ep4, S100 protein, TTF-1, PRP, ERP, and Leu-7. Since calretinin is both a sensitive and specific marker of reactive and neoplastic mesothelial cells, a diagnosis of malignant mesothelioma, epithelioid variant, was made. The performed exploratory laparotomy showed no evidence of malignancy and wide excision of the umbilical area showed no evidence of residual tumor. Follow-up examinations of the patient with repeated CT scans for the past two years were negative for recurrent or metastatic disease. We conclude that this malignancy likely developed in a setting of umbilical abnormalities associated with mesothelial remnants.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

ISSN: 1399-3054Source: Blackwell Publishing Journal Backfiles 1879-2005Topics: BiologyNotes: The formation of new xylem in the spring is preceded by bud development. In decapitated pine stem the formation of xylem is arrested until the outgrowth of interfascicular buds takes place. When indole-3yl-acetic acid (IAA) is applied to the cut surfaces of decapitated stems it induces the formation of a xylem ring on the whole length of 5-ycar old trees. Naphthaleneacetic acid (NAA) causes the formation of xylem; however, the width of the growth ring is several times broader at the point of application than at the base of the leader. Cis- and trans-cinnamic acids, coumarin, L-tryptophan, kinetin (Kin), benzylaminopurine (BAP) and gibberellic acid (GA) alone do not induce cambial divisions; however, GA and the cytokinins given jointly with IAA or NAA accelerated the basipetal stimulus which has been induced by the auxins, resulting in normal xylem formation. 2,3,5-Triiodobonzoic acid (TIBA) given jointly with IAA-induced formation of compression wood in the apical part of the stem and narrow diameter tracheids at the base. When carboxyl labelled IAA or NAA are applied to pine segments it is found that the basipetal movement of IAA is much quicker than that of NAA. GA and the cytokinins increase the rate of transport of both auxins, whereas TIBA arrests the bulk of auxin in the apical part of the stem.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

Elaboration of compound 12 along slightly different pathways culminated in the synthesis of carboxylic acid 10 and hydroxy compound 11, whose union by an esterification reaction, followed by ring closure of the subsequently derived hydroxy acid under Yamaguchi conditions, led to swinholide A (1) upon deprotection. The chemistry developed also allowed the total synthesis of prewinholide A methyl ester (7), preswinholide A (8), and hemiswinholide A (78).Additional Material: 4 Ill.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL:
