Reciprocal translocations, t(6;14), had been transmitted by his mother, his father being apparently homozygous for a translocation comprising pairs 1 and 19-t(1;19)(1;19). The genetic consequences of this complex chromosomal rearrangement are analyzed.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

ISSN: 1749-6632Source: Blackwell Publishing Journal Backfiles 1879-2005Topics: Natural Sciences in GeneralNotes: The purpose of this study was to investigate the differential effects of prenatal exposure to psychostimulants, e.g., cocaine or amphetamine, on basic growth parameters and morphometry of the medial prefrontal cortex of the rat. A group of pregnant Wistar rats was given 60 mg/kg body weight/day of cocaine hydrochloride and another group 10 mg/kg body weight/day of d-amphetamine sulfate, subcutaneously, from gestational days 8 to 22. Control groups of pregnant rats were pair-fed; litters were culled to eight pups (4 males and 4 females) weighed every other day until postnatal day 30 and every week until day 90. The body weight growth patterns modelled by a Gompertz curve were different in rats prenatally exposed to the two psychostimulants. Rats exposed to amphetamine had on average a slower growth than those exposed to cocaine, reaching an identical estimated adult weight. Allometric relationships between forebrain and body weight and cerebellum and body weight were described by two distinct postnatal growth phases that are different among the experimental groups. In the comparison of the two psychostimulants the relative cerebellum/body growth is lower in the offspring of the cocaine group than in the amphetamine group between PND14-PND30; between PND30-PND90 the relative growth rate is considerably higher in the offspring of the cocaine dams compared to that of the amphetamine dams. Groups of perfused animals were selected at postnatal days 14 and 30 to analyze the morphometric organization of the medial prefrontal cortex. In serial celloidin sections the volumes of the prefrontal cortex were determined; the number of neurons per unit volume of reference area was calculated using the stereological technique of the disector. The changes found in the morphometric parameters show a catch-up at postnatal day 30 of the “increased” density of neurons of the medial prefrontal cortex found at postnatal day 14. These data show differential growth patterns of offspring from cocaine- and amphetamine-exposed rats; a delayed development in the achievement of normal morphometric parameters of neurons in the prelimbic subarea of the medial prefrontal cortex occurs in the prenatally amphetamine-exposed offspring at early ages, and a catch-up is found after the first month of life. Complementary studies are needed to assess whether these changes have functional implications in the rats exposed prenatally to psychostimulants.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

Thirty patients with comedonal or inflammatory acne vulgaris were enrolled. The medications were applied once daily during the first week, and then twice daily for the rest of the trial (45 days). In patients with comedonal acne there was no difference in the effect of the two therapies. In patients with inflammatory acne the percentage reduction of the number of lesions on Day 30 was significantly higher in the benzoyl peroxide plus miconazole group (66%) compared to benzoyl peroxide alone (37%). At Day 45 there was a trend favouring the combined therapy but the difference was not signifieant. There were no significant differences i n the adverse reactions reported by the two groups of patients (erythema, itching or moderate exfoliation).Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

Published 1989Staff ViewISSN: 1741-2358Source: Blackwell Publishing Journal Backfiles 1879-2005Topics: MedicineNotes: As part of a collaborative multidisciplinary investigation of root surface caries (RSC), 273 subjects (median age = 57) were clinically evaluated for coronal caries, debris, calculus, gingivitis, periodontal pocketing, recession, abrasion, as well as RSC. The entire study group was divided into three subgroups: (1) subjects whose exposed root surface were without lesions or restorations (non-diseased individuals, n= 43); (2) subjects whose exposed root surfaces had one or more lesions and may or may not have had restorations (diseased individuals, n= 110); (3) subjects with one or more restorations but no lesions, since it was not known whether these restorations were preceded by RSC or abrasion the disease status of these individuals was unclear (n= 120). A comparison of Subgroup 1 (unequivocally non-diseased) and Subgroup 2 (unequivocally diseased) revealed that subjects without RSC had more teeth, less coronal caries, less recession, less debris, less calculus, less gingivitis, and more abrasion. We infer that the common factor underlying most if not all of the subgroup differences is oral hygiene which must therefore be a major disease determinant.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

ISSN: 1420-9071Source: Springer Online Journal Archives 1860-2000Topics: BiologyMedicineNotes: Summary Primitive neuritic plaques were observed in the inner third of the molecular layer of the cerebellar cortex of rats following chronic alcohol consumption. Neurites were indentified as dystrophic parallel fiber bouton. Amyloid material dispersed among neurites was not clearly recognized, dystrophic some fibrils were frequently seen among them. Astrocytic processes were noted in the periphery of the plaque. Microglial reaction, however, was non-existent. The rarity of these lesions in the rat cerebellum and their probable relation to long periods of alcohol consumption is discussed.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

ISSN: 1432-0568Keywords: Lipofuscin ; Alcohol-ageing ; Cerebellar interneurons ; RatSource: Springer Online Journal Archives 1860-2000Topics: MedicineNotes: Summary Lipofuscin deposition in nerve cells is one of the most reliable and consistent neurocytological features correlated with ageing. Purkinje cells of long-term alcoholfed rats show large agglomerates of lipofuscin granules after six months of alcohol experiment, whereas in normal biological ageing, this happens only after 25 months of age. Cerebellar interneurons have specific patterns of lipofuscin accumulation during ageing concerning both its morphological type and chronology of deposition. We studied the effects of chronic alcohol treatment on cerebellar interneurons taking particular account of lipofuscin pigment accumulation. Control and alcohol-fed groups for 1, 3, 6, 12 and 18 months were used. A precocious and progressive accumulation of lipofuscin granules occurred in granule, Golgi and basket cells. Stellate cells remained pigment-free. The lipofuscin deposited in the granule and Golgi cells was of the granular type, whereas that of basket and stellate cells was lamellar (fingerprint-like pattern). These results parallel those observed during normal ageing, and reinforce the hypothesis of the existence of a close relationship between chronic alcohol consumption and precocious nerve cell ageing.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

ISSN: 1432-0533Keywords: Subacute sclerosing panencephalitis ; Mitochondria ; Dendrites ; Mental changesSource: Springer Online Journal Archives 1860-2000Topics: MedicineNotes: Summary Biopsy fragments from the frontal cortex of two patients with early forms of subacute sclerosing panencephalitis (SSPE) were studied with ultrastructural methods. Special attention was given to mitochondrial abnormalities observed in dendrites from the three superficial cortical layers. Some of the mitochondria presented atypical elongated cristae parallel to the longer axis of the organelle and closely apposite each other. The surface of these cristae is undulated, and the intracristal space is regularly septate. As these abnormal mitochondria appeared in dendrites, which in later stages of the disease are supposed to degenerate, it is advanced that these abnormalities could be precursors of dendritic changes and be possibly related to the precocious, insidious mental changes which characterize the early forms of the disease, as it is known that the disruption of the dendritic domain is linked with neuronal dysfunction.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL:
