The technique combines the poling and waveguide formation steps by utilizing patterned poling electrodes and the induced birefringence associated with the poling process. Such systems are based on a class of polyimides which, once cured, possess a clear glass transition in their dielectric relaxation spectra, characteristic of thermoplasticity. After doping with compatible nonlinear optical molecules the polyimide host system can first be thermally imidized (cured) and then poled with an electric field. We found that sera of patients with a variety of inflammatory dermatoses contain elevated levels of antibodies (Ab) binding to an oxidized DNA base derivative, 5-hydroxyme-thyl-2′deoxyuridine (HMdU) coupled to bovine serum albumin, as determined by the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Patients with immune complex diseases and a history of neoplasm elaborated the highest titers of anti-HMdU Ab. Titers from sera of psoriatic subjects were lower than from the aforementioned groups but were still significantly elevated (p〈0. 001) above those of healthy controls. Treatment of inflammatory dermatoses with systemic antiinflammatory and cytotoxic drugs significantly lowered the titers [p〈0. 005 (immune complex) or p〈0. 001 (psoriasis and neoplastic) diseases], suggesting that this assay may be of value in monitoring the response to therapy in these diseases.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

The condition usually occurs in adults. In 1994, the criteria for this syndrome were redefined in a multicenter European study. In children, Sjögren’s syndrome is a rare and probably underdiagnosed disease. To date, Sjögren’s syndrome in children has only been described in case reports and in the comparative presentation of various study results. So far, no study of a comparative classification into primary and secondary Sjögren’s syndrome has been carried out in a patient population of any size. Sjögren’s syndrome should be considered in the differential diagnosis of children with recurrent parotitis, keratoconjunctivitis sicca, or pronounced and early tooth decay associated with xerostomia. In this study of 23 children and adolescents under the age of 16 with the clinical symptoms and laboratory findings of Sjögren’s syndrome, we differentiate between primary and secondary Sjögren’s syndrome. The value of the individual methods of assessing the oral and the ophthalmological components and the manifestation of the underlying rheumatic condition are discussed on the basis of the EULAR criteria. The EULAR diagnostic criteria are of limited applicability in children because reliable anamnestic data are frequently lacking. Another problem in diagnosing Sjögren’s syndrome is the short-term detection of serological alterations and clinical symptoms. Even if young patients do not completely fulfill the required criteria, Sjögren’s syndrome can be assumed or confirmed in the presence of positive testing for oral and ocular manifestations and recurrent salivary gland enlargement.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

Short-term (4 hr) uptake experiments showed seasonal changes in the size distributions of organisms taking up inorganic carbon, glucose carbon, and orthophosphate in the lake water. In a time-course experiment of 48 hr (Jan 1976) most, but not all, of the photosynthetic activity (average 72%) and a similar fraction of chlorophyll (72%) were associated with organisms retained on 3-μm Nuclepore filters (retention on 0.4-μm filters was 100%). About 90% of the organisms that assimilated glucose passed through 3-μm filters. Photosynthetic carbon fixation, dark carbon uptake, and heterotrophic uptake of glucose carbon accounted for 99%, 1%, and 1%, respectively, of the total net carbon assimilated during the first 6 hours. Radioactive phosphorus showed an initial rapid uptake into particles, which was not affected by light or dark. We suggest that this methodology has a wide potential for elucidating the flux of nutrients into various components of the microplankton and in characterizing different aquatic environments.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL:
