Fast C-V measurement techniques are utilized to simultaneously probe both upper and lower interfaces of silicon-on-insulator/separation by implantation of oxygen buried oxide capacitors following exposure to pulsed ionizing irradiation. In addition to the relatively stable radiation-induced positive charge, reverse annealing is observed from both Si-SiO2 interfaces over the 200 μs to 300 s post exposure interval; this behavior is consistent with electron detrapping within the oxide. The dependence of electron detrapping on dc annealing bias is attributed to field-enhanced emission effects.

Abstract : The inhibitor of apoptosis (IAP) family of anti-apoptoticgenes, originally discovered in baculovirus, exists in animals ranging frominsects to humans. Here, we investigated the ability of IAPs to suppress celldeath in both a neuronal model of apoptosis and excitotoxicity. Cerebellargranule neurons undergo apoptosis when switched from 25 to 5 mMpotassium, and excitotoxic cell death in response to glutamate. We examinedthe endogenous expression of four members of the IAP family, Xchromosome-linked IAP (XIAP), rat IAP1 (RIAP1), RIAP2, and neuronal apoptosisinhibitory protein (NAIP), by semiquantitative reverse PCR and immunoblotanalysis in cultured cerebellar granule neurons. Cerebellar granule neuronsexpress significant levels of RIAP2 mRNA and protein, but expression of RIAP1,NAIP, and XIAP was not detected. RIAP2 mRNA content and protein levels did notchange when cells were switched from 25 to 5 mM potassium. Todetermine whether ectopic expression of IAP influenced neuronal survival afterpotassium withdrawal or glutamate exposure, we used recombinant adenoviralvectors to target XIAP, human IAP1 (HIAP1), HIAP2, and NAIP into cerebellargranule neurons. We demonstrate that forced expression of IAPs efficientlyblocked potassium withdrawal-inducedN-acetly-Asp-Glu-Val-Asp-specific caspase activity and reduced DNAfragmentation. However, neurons were only protected from apoptosis up to 24 hafter potassium withdrawal, not at later time points suggesting that IAPSdelay but do not block apoptosis in cerebellar granule neurons. In contrast, treatment with 100 μM or 1 mM glutamate did not induce caspase activity and adenoviral-mediated expression of IAPs had no influence on subsequent excitotoxic cell death.

    Notes:
DPB1 locus typing of the 155 cell 4AOHW panel was performed using a PCR-RFLP method. Ambiguity of allele assignment was resolved by amplification using sequence-specific primers. Of the 150 cells for which typings were achieved, three exhibited unusual restriction enzyme fragment patterns, suggesting the possibility of novel DPB1 alleles. Sequence analysis revealed one allele present in the currently reported 46, one novel allele (4AOHW/107) not present among the 46, and one from a non-human primate which is being investigated. Twenty-six (26) of the 34 10IHW cells have been studied previously by cDNA RFLP, and strong haplotypic associations have been demonstrated between DPA1 and DPB1 locus alleles. It is proposed that exploitation of intron polymorphisms marking haplotypes will be an integral part of future DPB 1 typing as a ‘first-pass’ stratification process to minimize the requirement for sequence-based methods to definitively assign DPB 1 alleles.

Immnoglobulin allotypes (Gm) were analysed in 40 multiple sclerois (MS) patients and the distribution of phenotypes compared to that in 1220 healthy controls. The frequencies of Gm(1) and Gm(1, 2) are significantly increased in the patietns suggesting that the presence of the Gm3;5,13,14 haplotype confers a resistance to the development of MS.

This paper describes the nature of the spoil from the tunnelling activities, the plant requirements for its handling, and the investigation into possible disposal locations carried out in 1986 with a view to minimizing environmental impact. It further describes some of the steps currently being taken to minimize environmental impact at Shakespeare Cliff.

Results suggest that the mitogenic moiety of the PHA molecule is closely related to or identical with the antigenic determinant sites, and that ...
