    Description / Table of Contents:
    Notes:
Summary The acid-base equilibria of propane 1,2,3-triamine (PTA) and the formation equilibria of binary and ternary complexes of palladium(II) withPTA as primary ligand and amino acid, peptide, and DNA subunits as secondary ligand have been investigated. Pd(II) is found to form a 1:1 complex withPTA. The ternary complexes are formed in a stepwise mechanism, wherebyPTA first binds to Pd(II) and then ligates to the secondary ligand. The hydrolysis of the Pd-PTA complex and the deprotonation of the amide residues in the peptide complexes are discussed in relation to physiological conditions.

    Description / Table of Contents:

Summary The complex formation equilibria involved in the binary and ternary systemsM(II)-sulpha andM(II)-phen-sulpha were investigated by potentiometric titrations at 25°C and a ionic strength of 0.1N NaNO3 (M = Cu, Ni, Co, Zn;sulpha = sulphamethoxazole;phen = phenanthroline). The stability constants of the binary and ternary complexes follow the order ofIrving andWilliam. The formation of the ternary complex is discussed in terms of the binary species. The mode of chelation was ascertained by conductivity measurements.

Summary The complex formation equilibria of the binary and ternary systemsM(II)-Cephradine andM(II)-2,2-Bipyridyl-Cephradine were investigated by a potentiometric technique at 25°C and an ionic strength of 0.1M NaNO3 (M=Cu, Ni, Co, and Zn). The effect of dioxane as a solvent on the protonation constants of cephradine and the formation constants of the Cu-cephradine complex was studied. The relative stability of each ternary complex was compared with that of the corresponding binary complex in terms of ΔlogK. The mode of ternary complex formation was ascertained by conductivity measurements. The copper(II), nickel(II), and cobalt(II) complexes of cephradine were synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis, conductivity measurements, and IR spectra.

    Notes:
Abstract Radiologic evaluation is the mainstay in urogynecology. Currently videofluorourodynamics is the most precise diagnostic tool for evaluating disturbances of micturition. However, evolving application of ultrasonography, when combined with urodynamics, constitutes an attractive alternative for such evaluations. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) may prove to be a powerful research and clinical tool. Advantages and limitations of each imaging modality are discussed.

    Notes:
Abstract The effect of lipoprotein-deficient serum (LPDS) with and without added low-density lipoprotein (LDL), isolated from diabetic subjects, on the replication of SV40-transformed islet cells (HIT cells) was investigated. Whole serum as well as LPDS preparations stimulated DNA synthesis maximally when added to the culture medium at a final concentration of 0.1%. The addition of LDL at 25 and 175 μg protein/ml medium did not cause further stimulation. On the contrary, the higher concentrations resulted in a significant inhibition. These results suggest that previously observed stimulation of DNA synthesis in smooth muscle cells by LDL from diabetic subjects is most likely due to the presence of growth factors in the serum of these patients and not to LDL per se.
