ISSN: 1089-7690Source: AIP Digital ArchiveTopics: PhysicsChemistry and PharmacologyNotes: Coherent anti-Stokes–Raman scattering (CARS)-excitation profiles (CEPs) of the fundamental vibrational mode of I2 dissolved in cyclohexane and dibromomethane are determined with excitation wave numbers ranging from 17 000 to 23 000 cm−1. The experiments were performed at room temperature and with laser beams polarized parallel to each other. Calculations were performed for both the absorption spectrum and the CEPs of iodine in both solvents and compared with experimental results. Good qualitative agreement of the major features of the CEPs was found using gas phase potentials for the excited states 1Π1u and 3Π0+u and the ground state 1Σ+g. The excited state potential functions were slightly shifted to match the measured absorption spectra. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

Cosmids were selected from a provisional set of minimally overlapping clones, subcloned in pUC18, and sequenced using a hybrid (random plus directed) strategy to give two blocks of contiguous unique sequence, respectively, 100389 and 56105bp. These two contigs contain a total of 163 open reading frames (ORFs) in 26–29 putative operons; 56 ORFs could be identified with reasonable certainty. Clusters of ORFs potentially encode proteins of glycogen biosynthesis, oxidative decarboxylation of pyruvate, ATP-dependent transport across membranes, isoprenoid biosynthesis, protein synthesis, and ribosomes. Putative promoters occur upstream of most ORFs. Thirty per cent of the predicted strong and medium-strength promoters can initiate transcription at the start codon or within 10 nucleotides upstream, indicating a process of initial mRNA-ribosome contact unlike that of most eubacterial genes. A novel termination motif is proposed to account for 15 additional terminations. The two contigs differ in densities of ORFs, insertion elements and repeated sequences; together they contain two copies of the previously reported insertion sequence ISC 1217, five additional IS elements representing four novel types, four classes of long non-IS repeated sequences, and numerous short, perfect repeats.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

Published 2002Staff ViewISSN: 1365-2133Source: Blackwell Publishing Journal Backfiles 1879-2005Topics: MedicineNotes: Summary Background Previous studies have indicated that solar and artificial ultraviolet (UV) radiation have a positive influence on psychological variables such as mood and emotional state. Circulating opioid peptides have been suggested as being important in this effect. Objectives To investigate in a controlled trial the influence of UVA radiation on opioid peptide levels. Methods We determined plasma levels of β-endorphin immunoreactive material (IRM) and met-enkephalin in UV-exposed ( n = 35) and non-exposed ( n = 9) healthy volunteers. On the first day of the study, blood samples were taken from the volunteers (time A). UVA irradiation was subsequently administered with an air-conditioned tanning device. During the UV exposures the volunteers wore opaque goggles. Twenty minutes after UV exposure, blood samples were collected again (time B). Within the following 3 weeks the volunteers had a series of five UV exposures. On the last day of the study (24 h after the sixth UV exposure) blood samples were collected (time C). The cumulative UVA doses were 96 J cm −2 for skin type II and 126 J cm −2 for skin type III. The controls had no UV exposures. Plasma β-endorphin IRM and met-enkephalin levels were determined using radioimmunoassays. Results At all times of blood collection (A, B, C), there were no significant differences in plasma levels of β-endorphin IRM and met-enkephalin between UV-exposed and non-exposed volunteers ( P 〉 0·05). Conclusions UVA irradiation does not significantly elevate plasma levels of β-endorphin IRM and met-enkephalin. Therefore we suggest that psychological benefits claimed to occur after UV exposure are unlikely to be mediated by the types of circulating opioid peptides measured in this study.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -
