ISSN: 1089-7623Source: AIP Digital ArchiveTopics: PhysicsElectrical Engineering, Measurement and Control TechnologyNotes: A plasma-cathode electron gun based on a moderate pressure (〉5 mTorr) cold-cathode discharge and a high perveance, multiaperture accelerator was previously developed at Hughes Research Laboratories and produced electron beam currents of up to 1 kA at voltages of over 200 kV for pulse lengths of 100 μs. This gun was limited in pulse repetition frequency and duty by the gas-puff system that provided adequate gas pressure in the hollow cathode to operate the glow discharge while keeping the pressure in the beam transport region sufficiently low. We describe a new plasma cathode electron gun (PCE gun) that eliminates this problem by replacing the glow-discharge plasma generator in the electron gun by a low-pressure thermionic discharge in a magnetic multipole confinement chamber. Proper design of the plasma generator and electrical circuit provides high electron-current densities to the accelerator structure at very low gas pressure (〈10−4 Torr). The static gas pressure permits the pulse repetition frequency to be very high (〉1.5 kHz demonstrated) with electron beam currents up to 200 A at voltages up to 120 kV demonstrated. The design and performance of the PCE gun, along with several models used to predict and scale the performance, are discussed. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

It was shown that the thromboplastic activity and the L/S ratio in amniotic fluid had a coefficient of correlation of r =−0.73 (P〈0.004). The thromboplastic activity was estimated by a modified method for prothrombin time, and a time of 113 seconds appeared to correspond to an L/S ratio of 2, in that it was the borderline between maturity and immaturity of the fetal lungs. Thirty women were delivered within 24 hours of a sample of amniotic fluid being obtained. In the three patients whose babies developed the respiratory distress syndrome, the thromboplastic activity was estimated as being slower than 113 seconds.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

One group of 25 women had a normal active labour, the second group of 10 women were in active labour with moderate variable decelerations. A control group of 25 women—healthy pregnant women at term but not in active labour. All three groups were comparable for maternal age and parity.Setting Hospital department of Obstetrics and gynaecology, Israel.Design A prospective descriptive study. Results There was a 40% reduction in middle cerebral artery blood flow impedance in the two groups of women in active labour compared with the control group. Umbilical blood flow did not differ significantly between the three groups. Fetal middle cerebral blood flow impedance in labour was not significantly different in uncomplicated labours and those complicated by fetal heart rate decelerations. Conclusions During active labour, mechanisms that may be unrelated to low fetal blood oxygen content reduce fetal brain blood vessel impedance.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

The average baseline D3MFT scores of the 7-, 8- and 9-yr-old urban and rural children were 0.27, 0.33, 0.35 and 0.04, 0.23 and 0.23, respectively; the average deft values were 2.9, 2.4, 2.6 and 1.4, 1.9 and 1.4. The permanent dentition was caries free (D3MFT = 0) in 80 and 89% of the urban and rural children, respectively. Gingivitis was prevalent in rural (61%) and urban (55%) children; visible plaque was present in 93% of the children in both subsamples. The results of this baseline study show that the child population under study reflects the national Tanzanian situation with higher caries prevalence in urban than in rural children.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -
