    Notes:
Abstract The first case of adenocarcinoma developing in a continent ileostomy is reported. A healthy, 39-year-old man with a continent ileostomy for 17 years developed subacute obstructive symptoms and was found on endoscopy to have a large adenocarcinoma involving the intussusception valve. At operation, he was found to have a large tumor originating in the valve, extending through the reservoir, and involving the afferent ileal limb. A number of metastatic lymph nodes were identified in the mesentery of the small bowel. He underwent excision of the pouch and formation of an end ileostomy. He is currently undergoing adjuvant chemotherapy. Biochemical and morphologic changes in the ileal pouch, both in the pelvis and the continent ileostomy, are discussed. The implications of this apparentde novo cancer arising in an ileal pouch are discussed.

The crystallographic structure and coercive force of Co75Pt12Cr13/CrVx bilayer films sputter deposited on NiP/AlMg disks used in longitudinal magnetic recording were characterized as a function of varying V content from pure Cr through pure V. The coercive force of the CoPtCr peaked at an intermediate composition of the CrVx sublayer. The origin of this effect was elucidated by x-ray diffraction, x-ray pole-figure analysis, cross-section TEM, and elongated probe microdiffraction. The improving degree of epitaxy between the CoPtCr and the CrVx sublayer, the increasing fraction of Cr grains favoring the growth of (112¯0) Co grains with c axis in-plane, a narrowing of the mosaic spread in the orientation of Co grains, and an increasing size of Co regions with the 〈112¯0(approximately-greater-than) fiber axis orientation as CrVx composition approaches values between 80/20 and 50/50 Cr/V content account for the observed coercivity increase.

It is well established that magnetic interactions in particulate media and films can be assessed on the basis of the correlation between the normalized dc demagnetization remanence, Id(H), and the normalized isothermal remagnetization remanence, Ir(H). Departures of Henkel plots from the straight-line relationship of the Wohlfarth equation may be regarded as a measure of the strength of the intergranular field interactions in thin films. Delta-I plots are commonly used to manifest these interactions. These remanence techniques have been applied to both ordered and highly disordered (granular) sputtered multilayers of Co/Cu in which the giant magnetoresistance effect has been observed. Both the Henkel plots and the delta-I (MR) plots exhibit oscillatory characteristics, which correlate with magnetoresistance and critical field data. Figure 1 shows the amplitude of the delta-I plot as a function of Cu volume fraction in quasigranular Co/Cu films in good correlation with the amplitude of the giant MR effect. Similar results have been obtained even with relatively thick multilayers of Fe/Cu in which the giant MR is extremely weak. These results would seem to indicate that comprehensive remanence measurements involving Henkel and/or delta-I plots are effective in evaluating intergranular exchange coupling in giant MR film systems, given that these plots can be processed to provide quantitative interaction field data.

We report on K-band ferromagnetic resonance studies made on a sequence of PtCo multilayer films. Two principal results emerge: (a) the angular dependence of the resonance fields can be fitted only by a combination of second and fourth order anisotropy: E = Keff sin2 θ+ K4 sin4 θ, and (b) an additional resonance was observed at fields below the major resonance position in some of the specimens. Although these latter spectra were observed about the surface normal only over a restricted angular range, we were able to fit these lines as well with a combination of second- and fourth-order anisotropy. In each case the integrated absorption intensity of the secondary spectrum, when present, was comparable to that of the primary resonance. The physical origin of these additional spectra is not yet entirely clear.

We report the observation of a large magnetoresistance in as-deposited co-sputtered Ag-Ni-Fe films. The size of the magnetoresistance has been measured as a function of the film composition. Measurement of the samples' hysteresis indicates that smaller Ag concentrations result in regions of the films becoming ferromagnetically coupled while greater concentrations result in the formation of a superparamagnetic state. Crystallographic evidence obtained using x-ray diffraction shows the samples to have the crystal structure of a contracted Ag lattice possibly caused by the inclusion of Ni and Fe.

Giant magnetoresistance in granular alloy thin films prepared by co-sputtering as well as in quasi-granular disordered multilayers has been modeled with relative ease using a simple scattering concept appropriate to superparamagnetic films and involving the Langevin function. The model has been applied to both as-deposited and annealed samples with the result that approximate sizes of spin clusters may be determined.

Thin films of Ba-hexaferrite of the magnetoplumbite structure have been prepared on sapphire substrates of orientation (112¯0), (11¯02), and (0001). Torque magnetometry indicates easy axes parallel, tilted off parallel, and perpendicular to the substrate for the A-, R-, and C-plane substrates. X-ray diffraction shows that this is due to epitaxy between the Ba-ferrite and sapphire. For each substrate orientation, the c axes of the Ba-hexaferrite and sapphire are parallel and the directions of close packing in the close-packed oxygen planes perpendicular to the c axes are parallel. Torque measurements are consistent with the combined effects of crystal and shape anisotropy. These results suggest that Ba-hexaferrite thin films with an easy axis at any angle with respect to the substrate can be prepared by appropriate choice of the sapphire substrate orientation, which may be of interest for microwave and other applications.

"Giant'' magnetoresistance ratios have been measured at room temperature in single layer Co–Ag alloy thin film. The effect has been observed over a broad range of Co concentrations with a maximum as-deposited MR ratio of ≥22% (at x=0.38). The effects of two annealing sequences have also been studied. The MR ratio generally increases on annealing reaching a maximum of ∼28% (at x=0.38) after the second anneal.

Recent published work has indicated Kerr rotation enhancement in periodic magneto-optic (MO) multilayers as compared to values obtained for single magnetic films. This paper describes both computational and analytical investigations of MO multilayers. Computational studies indicate only marginal gains in shot-noise-limited signal-to-noise ratio in periodic magnetic film-dielectric spacer systems over the corresponding values for fully optimized single magnetic films.
