    Summary In a model of focal cerebral ischaemia in the cat (transorbital occlusion of the middle cerebral artery for 60 minutes, thereafter 6 hours reperfusion by clip removal), hydroxyethyl-starch (HAES) (ELOHES; Leopold Pharma GmbH, Graz, Austria) was administered intravenously before and during the ischaemic episode as a 6% or as a 10% solution in a randomised manner (6 animals each group). The size of the developing cerebral infarct was not significantly different when comparing the 6% and the 10% group with the controls (SALINE). Collateral circulation to the infarct border (pial arteries on the suprasylvian gyrus) was also not significantly different between the two groups, except for the first hour of reperfusion, where vessels of the 6% group were wider than vessels of the 10% group. At the infarct border (ectosylvian gyrus) small resistance vessels were significantly more dilated in the 6% than in the 10% group both during the occlusion period and during the reperfusion episode after removal of the clip. Pial arteries dilated less in both HAES-groups than in the controls. It can be assumed, that HAES-incuded decrease of plasma viscosity led to an elevation of blood flow velocity and blood flow quantity (CBF). But the latter might be counteracted by autoregulation of CBF, i.e. vasoconstriction. Thus, a possible positive effect of HAES might in part be counteracted by autoregulation, which explaines that no significant therapeutic effect could be achieved.

    Summary Using parietal cranial windows and multichannel videoangiometry, pial vessel responses were studied in cats during stepwise elevation of superior sagittal sinus pressure (PSSS) to a level of 50 mmHg or reduction of CSF-pressure (PCSF). PCSF was monitored via a needle in the great cistern, known from previous studies to be identical to supratentorial CSF-pressure. During elevation of PSSS, large and small pial veins dilated by 14±6.1% from resting diameter. Small arteries remained unresponsive until they were dilated by 9±2.1% at the level of PSSS 50mmHg. Large arteries dilated by 18±5.5% at the level of PSSS 50 mmHg. PSSS was always approximately twice as high as PCSF during increase of PSSS. During reduction of PCSF to − 5 mmHg, pial veins also dilated, by 7.4±1 % on the average. This observation suggests that normal PCSF is a result of mainly venous vascular pressure, and that the level of normal venous pressure is not dictated by PCSF but by the function and architecture of the cerebral vasculature. Since the rapid reduction of cerebral perfusion pressure CPP by elevation of venous pressure does not induce autoregulatory adjustment according to the level of CPP, but to the level of arterial transmural pressure, it is concluded, that the basic mechanism underlying autoregulation of CBF is myogenic.

    Summary During the period of one year, from the 21. 4. 1992 to 21. 4. 1993, a total of 201 radiosurgical sessions on 181 patients were performed with the first Austrian Gamma-unit in Graz. 42% of radiosurgical sessions were undertaken for malignomas, 20% for meningiomas, 11.5% for vascular malformations, 9% for neurinomas, 8.5% for low grade astrocytomas and glomus jugulare tumours, 5% for sellar and suprasellar lesions, and 4% for functional disorders. Dose plan data for all the lesions treated are shown. Clinical and imaging data of the first year which are available for 120 patients (66%) are presented and discussed.

    Abstract A 76-year-old woman presented with an intrasellar and suprasellar mass which caused deterioration of visual acuity and bitemporal visual field defects. Trans-sphenoidal and transcranial partial resection revealed a primary chemodectoma. This tumour is very rare in the sellar area, where there are normally no paraganglionic cells. We review the literature and discuss possible mechanisms for the development of this tumour.

    Abstract Intrafamilial spread ofHaemophilus influenzae typ B disease has often been described for meningitis, but rarely for epiglottitis. Here we report for the first time epiglottitis occurring simultaneously in two siblings and comment on the value of chemoprophylaxis and vaccination to prevent secondary and primary disease.

    Abstract Between October 1989 and Junuary 1991 five children with brain stem tumors were treated with sequential chemo- and radiotherapy. The polychemotherapy consisted of procarbazine, ifosfamide, etoposide, methotrexate, cisplatin and cytosine arabinoside. Locally, hyperfractionated radiotherapy was delivered at a total dose of 63.8 Gy (1.1 Gy twice daily, 10 fractions per week). After a median observation time of 11.8 (range 4–23) months from diagnosis three children are alive and without evidence of tumor progression. Two patients died from tumor progression 11 and 16 months respectively after initiation of therapy.

    Abstract We report the finding at follow-up in 67 consecutive children with central nervous system tumors treated over a 5-year-period at a single institution. The diagnoses were supratentorial astrocytoma (n = 12), cerebellar astrocytoma (n = 10), ependymoma (n = 9), medulloblastoma (n = 9), brain stem glioma (n = 6), optic pathway glioma (n = 5), and others (n = 16). The survival rates were 83% for supratentorial astrocytomas at a median of 46.5 months, 90% for cerebellar astrocytomas and 55% for ependymomas at 40 months, respectively, 55% for medulloblastomas at 22 months, 33% for brain stem gliomas at 23 months, and 80% for optic pathway gliomas at 49 months. With regard to neurological sequelae, 13 patients were treated for epilepsy, 13 patients had mild to moderate neurological deficits, and 4 patients were severely disabled. Seventeen of 37 tested patients performed below average on formal neuropsychometric testing, one-fourth attended special education courses, and at least one-fourth suffered from behavioral and adjustment problems.

    Abstract Fluorescence images of leaves of sugar beet plants (Beta vulgaris L. cv. Patricia) grown on an experimental field with different fertilisation doses of nitrogen [0, 3, 6, 9, 12, 15 g(N) m−2] were taken, applying a new multicolour flash-lamp fluorescence imaging system (FL-FIS). Fluorescence was excited by the UV-range (280–400 nm, λmax = 340 nm) of a pulsed Xenon lamp. The images were acquired successively in the four fluorescence bands of leaves near 440, 520, 690, and 740 nm (F440, F520, F690, F740) by means of a CCD-camera. Parallel measurements were performed to characterise the physiological state of the leaves (nitrogen content, invert-sugars, chlorophylls and carotenoids as well as chlorophyll fluorescence induction kinetics and beet yield). The fluorescence images indicated a differential local patchiness across the leaf blade for the four fluorescence bands. The blue (F440) and green fluorescence (F520) were high in the leaf veins, whereas the red (F690) and far-red (F740) chlorophyll (Chl) fluorescences were more pronounced in the intercostal leaf areas. Sugar beet plants with high N supply could be distinguished from beet plants with low N supply by lower values of F440/F690 and F440/F740. Both the blue-green fluorescence and the Chl fluorescence rose at a higher N application. This increase was more pronounced for the Chl fluorescence than for the blue-green one. The results demonstrate that fluorescence ratio imaging of leaves can be applied for a non-destructive monitoring of differences in nitrogen supply. The FL-FIS is a valuable diagnostic tool for screening site-specific differences in N-availability which is required for precision farming.
