ISSN: 1089-7550Source: AIP Digital ArchiveTopics: PhysicsNotes: We discuss some properties of the scalar moving Preisach model (MPM) in relation to the description of magnetic interactions. MPM predictions for the behavior of Henkel plots are worked out. The role of the factorization properties of the Preisach distribution and the consequences of the joint presence of mean-field effects and local random interactions are discussed. Literature data are analyzed in the frame of this description, with particular attention to thin-film media with perpendicular magnetization, where mean-field effects are particularly strong. Some of the theoretical predictions are directly tested by hysteresis and Henkel plot measurements performed on SiFe soft alloys. A good agreement, in some cases involving no adjustable parameters, is found.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

ISSN: 1468-2397Source: Blackwell Publishing Journal Backfiles 1879-2005Topics: SociologyNotes: Argentina is considered to be one of the most successful cases of structural reforms in Latin America, because of the extent and rapid pace of the reforms after the hyperinflationary process of 1989–1990. At the beginning of 1991, the convertible plan was launched and inflation fell sharply. However, even when the economy is growing fast, the problems in the labor market seem to worsen. Unemployment and underemployment have risen, and an increasing number of people have fallen out of normal work. The article analyzes how changes in labor markets are closely related to the transformation process in the economic system. After a summary of the situation before the crisis of the 1980s, the article analyzes the stabilization plans applied and then discusses the current dynamics of labor markets and the policies implemented to change labor regulations. Finally, some hypotheses about future scenarios are presented.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

It is thought that the fish will alter the phytoplankton community, improve water quality, and enhance channel catfish production. Co-stocking of shad and catfish is a common practice, although there is limited information regarding the effects of threadfin shad on pond dynamics and catfish production. To evaluate the influence of shad in catfish ponds, this study was conducted in ten 0.04-ha experimental earthen ponds near Auburn, Alabama. All ponds were stocked in April with 600 fingerling channel catfish Ictal-urus punctatus (13,200/ha) with a mean length of 10.4 cm (4.1 in). Additionally, five of these ponds were randomly chosen and stocked with 70 adult threadfin shad (1,750/ha) weighing a total of 3.3 kg (16.5 kg/ha). At harvest in November, an average of 1,284 threadfin shad (32,100/ha), weighing a total of 55 kg (1,375 kg/ha) were collected from each shad pond. Water quality was improved with the addition of threadfin shad to channel catfish ponds. Mean total ammonia-nitrogen was significantly lower and less variable in the shad treatment. Observed mean nitrite concentrations, though not significant, were lower in the shad treatment. The phytoplankton community of the shad treatment had significantly higher density, more taxa, and smaller organisms. Pond water in the shad treatment had higher projected early morning dissolved oxygen levels requiring less aeration. Channel catfish had significantly higher survival in the shad treatment, furthermore, though not statistically significant, observed mean fish production was higher and feed conversion ratio was lower than in the no-shad treatment.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

ISSN: 1432-0630Keywords: 81.15Source: Springer Online Journal Archives 1860-2000Topics: Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science, Production Engineering, Mining and Metallurgy, Traffic Engineering, Precision MechanicsPhysicsNotes: Abstract The major reasons for the low photovoltaic efficiency of Cu2S/CdS cells, in which the CdS film is deposited by spraying, are due to small film thicknesses which do not exceed 4 μm and the small average grain size which ranges from 0.1 to 0.5 μm. A new experimental “solution spraying” procedure is described that prevents both restrictions by controlling the substrate temperature. Average grain sizes of more than 1 μm are obtained.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

All patients underwent the same diagnostic protocol. The presenting symptoms were: ptosis, 35 patients (33%); diplopia, 27 patients (26%); ptosis and diplopia, 43 patients (41%). The oculomotor nerve was most frequently involved, followed by the abducens nerve. The final diagnoses were: ocular myasthenia, intracranial and/or orbital pathology, thyroid ophthalmopathy, diabetic ophthalmoplegia, mitochondrial myopathy, oculopharyngeal muscular dystrophy. In 26 patients (25%) the cause remained undetermined. Our study confirms the difficulty of establishing an aetiological diagnosis in patients with isolated ocular palsies.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -
