    Oral lichen planus (OLP) is a chronic inflammatory disease of the oral mucosa characterized by a band-like accumulation of lymphocytes in the connective tissue adjacent to the basement membrane as well as intraepithelially. Amalgam fillings can induce oral lichenoid reactions (OLR) that are similar to OLP. The adhesion molecule ICAM-1 and the chemokines interleukin-8 and RANTES all play central roles in leucocyte trafficking. The aim of this study was to investigate the possible role of these molecules in the migration of leucocytes into the oral mucosa in OLP and OLR. Standard immunoperoxidase techniques were used to visualize the expression of ICAM-1, RANTES and interleukin-8 in frozen biopsy sections. ICAM-1 was expressed by endothelial cells, but not by keratinocytes, in normal oral mucosa. ICAM-1 was expressed by keratinocytes in 11 of 12 biopsies of OLP and in six of seven biopsies of OLR. In all of these cases ICAM-1 was also expressed by endothelial cells and leucocytes. Although not present in normal oral mucosa, RANTES was expressed by keratinocytes in 21 of 24 biopsies of OLP and in seven of seven cases of OLR. Interleukin-8 was not detected in any of the samples. The expression of ICAM-1 and RANTES by epithelial keratinocytes in the oral mucosa in OLP and OLR could be a key inflammatory mechanism in these diseases.

    Reactive sputtering was used to grow thin films of ScxGa1−xN with scandium concentration of 20%–70% on quartz substrates at temperatures of 300–675 K. X-ray diffraction (XRD) of the films showed either weak or no structure, suggesting the films are amorphous or microcrystalline. Optical absorption spectra were taken of each sample and the optical band gap was determined. The band gap varied linearly with composition between 2.0 and 3.5 eV. ScN and GaN have different crystal structures (rocksalt and wurzite, respectively), and thus may form a heterogeneous mixture as opposed to an alloy. Since the XRD data were inconclusive, bilayers of ScN/GaN were grown and optical absorption spectra taken. A fundamental difference in the spectra between the bilayer films and alloy films was seen, suggesting the films are alloys not heterogeneous mixtures. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    The purpose of this study was to investigate the efficacy of organic ligands in cleaning human skin contaminated with nickel. 4 ligands were investigated, 5-chloro-7-iodoquinolin-8-ol (either as HL1 or NaL1), ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (either as H4L2 or Na2H2L2), sodium diethyldithiocarbamate (NaL3) and -histidine (HL4). The cytotoxicity of these ligands was assessed using HaCaT cells (a transformed human keratinocyte cell line). The cytotoxicity order of the ligands was NaL1 〉 Na2H2L2 〉 NaL3 〉 HL4. An in vitro methodology for examining nickel removal from viable human skin was developed. This methodology was then used to compare the efficiency of the ligands in removing nickel from skin, both alone and in combination with soap solutions. HL1 and NaL3 were no more effective than control solutions in removing nickel over the pH range 2–11. In contrast, both H4L2 and HL4 removed between 74 and 87% (mean=82±3%) of nickel from human skin over the same pH range. Nickel removal from skin by sodium lauryl ethoxy sulfate (SLES, the active ingredient in most liquid skin cleansers) was independent of concentration and no more effective than phosphate-buffered saline (PBS). The amount of nickel removed by PBS solutions of Na2H2L2 and HL4 was significantly greater than the amount removed by SLES and was concentration dependent. An evaluation of nickel removal from skin by commercial solid soap, liquid soap and PBS, both alone and with added Na2H2L2 or HL4, was conducted. Commercial liquid soap with added HL4 was more effective than the untreated soap. PBS with either added Na2H2L2 or HL4 was more effective than PBS alone.

    The results of a beach seine survey of an East African mangrove creek are presented. The fish community of the creek is described and is compared with that of a nearby lagoonal site and with those described for other mangrove and estuarine systems. The species composition was found to differ substantially between the creek and the lagoon site, though diversity indices for the two areas were similar. Eighty-three species of teleost fish werecollected from the mangrove area of the creek. This number is considered high in relation to comparable studies and is attributed to the constant high salinity (approximately 35%o) measured throughout the study period. Approximately 90% of the fish caught were juveniles. Plankton sampling was also carried out and representatives of 21 fish families were collected as larvae within the creek. Catches from both beach seining and plankton sampling in the mangrove areas were dominated numerically by resident clupeid and gobiid species. The majority of species, however, were considered to have a widespread distribution as adults. A discrepancy between the catch composition of larvae and juveniles suggests that species that use the creek as a nursery area enter the system principally at a post-larval/ juvenile stage of development. No systematic spatial or temporal variation in the community structure was identified over the study period.

    This paper describes design and construction of two new sea outfalls discharging from Gullane Waste Water Treatment Works (WwTW) to Aberlady Bay, on the south side of the Forth estuary (Firth of Forth), 25km east of Edinburgh, Scotland. The outfalls were installed by float and lower, using the Flow-Lay® technique, believed to be a first for steel pipes. The paper also describes air transport, beach movement and soil liquefaction and their effect on pipe stability, material and profile.
