ISSN: 1471-0528Source: Blackwell Publishing Journal Backfiles 1879-2005Topics: MedicineNotes: Summary. The results of a cervical mucus scoring system and of basal body temperature (BBT) chart interpretation were compared with those of a short-incubation radioimmunoassay for luteinizing hormone (LH) in 198 ovulatory menstrual cycles. The timing of the maximal cervical mucus score was similar to that of the LH peak in all but 7% of assessable cycles. In contrast, the timing of the nadir of the BBT differed widely from that of the LH peak in 45% of cycles with interpretable charts. These findings suggest that cervical mucus scoring might be useful for identifying the time of ovulation where LH assays are unavailable or where speed and economy are at a premium.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

Published 1996Staff ViewISSN: 1077-3118Source: AIP Digital ArchiveTopics: PhysicsNotes: A magnetic field induced insulator to metal transition has been observed in both polycrystalline and single crystals samples of Pr0.7Ca0.3MnO3. Application of a magnetic field leads to a first-order phase transition from an insulating to a conducting state at low temperatures. The hysteresis associated with this transition allows the resistivity at 4 K to be varied by more than eight orders of magnitude depending on the field history of the sample. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

Below 50 K, a field induced insulator-metal transition results in changes in resistivity of at least 6 orders of magnitude. The field induced conducting state is metastable at low temperature. The temperature dependence of the resistivity exhibits considerable hysteresis in a field of 40 kOe but becomes reversible in a field of 80 kOe. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

The model uses export coefficients to predict annual diffuse losses of phosphorus from catchment land use, which are temporally disaggregated using empirical relationships between phosphorus load and discharge in headwater streams. Dynamic inputs of phosphorus are incorporated into a hydrologically based, multi-reach distributed catchment model which also simulates sewage discharges, abstractions and reservoirs/ lakes. The model allows a comparison of simulated output with observed discharge and water-quality data from various points within the river system.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

Application of the model for critical-period analysis and the setting of environmental targets and trigger values are discussed, and an example is given showing the impact of changing reservoir output on the frequency distribution of phosphorus using an eighty-year set of river-discharge data. The impact of phosphorus removal at point sources in the catchment on phosphorus concentrations in the river and reservoir is simulated and compared to results from SIMCAT - a steady-state model which was developed by the Environment Agency. Results are also compared with observed data following the implementation of the EC urban waste water treatment Directive, at the end of 1998.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

ISSN: 1747-6593Source: Blackwell Publishing Journal Backfiles 1879-2005Topics: Energy, Environment Protection, Nuclear Power EngineeringNotes: A modification of the well-known water-quality model ‘quality simulation along river systems’(QUASAR) is presented in order to extend its ability, so that it may be considered applicable under unsteady-flow conditions. An aggregated dead-zone travel-time parameter, based on (a) the kinematic wave velocity (celerity) of the flow wave and (b) the behaviour of the solute within so-called ‘dead zones’, has been incorporated into the existing model formulation. This extends the current continuously-stirred tank reactor-based model process to account for the behaviour of solute under unsteady-flow conditions. The enhanced water-quality model has been validated by application to the Colorado River.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -
