Abstract  Four Late Holocene pyroclastic units composed of block and ash flows, surges, ashfalls of silicic andesite and dacite composition, and associated lahar deposits represent the recent products emitted by domes on the upper part of Nevado Cayambe, a large ice-capped volcano 60 km northeast of Quito. These units are correlated stratigraphically with fallout deposits (ash and lapilli) exposed in a peat bog. Based on 14C dating of the peat and charcoal, the following ages were obtained: ∼910 years BP for the oldest unit, 680–650 years BP for the second, and 400–360 years BP for the two youngest units. Moreover, the detailed tephrochronology observed in the peat bog and in other sections implies at least 21 volcanic events during the last 4000 years, comprising three principal eruptive phases of activity that are ∼300, 800, and 900 years in duration and separated by repose intervals of 600–1000 years. The last phase, to which the four pyroclastic units belong, has probably not ended, as suggested by an eruption in 1785–1786. Thus, Cayambe, previously thought to have been dormant for a long time, should be considered active and potentially dangerous to the nearby population of the Interandean Valley.

    Notes:
Abstract  A recently favored hypothesis is that duetting in birds has a mate-guarding function: a male responds vocally to his partner’s song, thereby forming a duet that repels males who are attracted to her song. Previous studies have not provided unambiguous tests of the mate-guarding hypothesis because: (1) the probability of a male answering his partner’s song has not been shown to increase specifically when the female is fertile, and (2) the probability of a male answering his partner’s song has not been assessed separately from simply a higher song initiation rate. We investigated extra-pair paternity, mate-guarding, and duetting in the socially monogamous Australian magpie-lark (Grallina cyanoleuca). DNA fingerprinting revealed that 3% of young were the result of extra-pair paternity, and we found that males guarded fertile females by staying close to them. However, males did not initiate songs at a higher rate when females were fertile and actually reduced their probability of replying to female song during this period. We conclude that although male magpie-larks did guard fertile females in an attempt to prevent extra-pair copulations, they did not use duetting for this purpose.

Abstract It is commonly assumed that there is minimal variation between the hips in an individual, but is densitometry of one femur representative of the other? We performed bone mineral density (BMD) measurements of both hips using a Hologic QDR 1000 densitometer. There were 110 patients, all of whom were right handed, and three main groups of subjects: (1) normal volunteers (n = 36); (2) subjects with known hip pathology (n = 36); (3) subjects with medical conditions not affecting the hip (n = 38). The mean age of the subjects was 46 (21–87) years and a standard analysis protocol was followed in all patients. The coefficient of variation (COV) for femurs was 0.9–3%, depending upon the region studied and the BMD. The left femur had a greater BMD 48% of the time and there were variable differences between femurs in each group studied. While the greatest differences were found in people with unilateral hip pathology, all groups had mean differences greater than the COV It may be acceptable to study only one hip, but the large variation between femurs in individuals should be borne in mind when interpreting data.

    Description / Table of Contents:
Résumé Des échantillons prélevés sur des animaux de ferme à l'abattoir et une usine de traitement de carcasses ont été examinés pour une recherche de Salmonelles. Vingt sept sérotypes ont été décelés dans cent trente échantillons infectés. Un produit de l'usine de traitement carcasses était fortement infecté. La salmonellose est considérée comme une maladie économiquement importante chez les dromadaires, les veaux et les volailles en Ethiopie.
    Abstract:

Summary Samples derived from farm livestock, an abattoir and a bone factory, were examined for salmonella. Twenty-seven serotypes were detected in 130 infected samples. A bone factory product was heavily infected. Salmonellosis is considered to be an important disease of dromedary calves and poultry in Ethiopia.

    Notes:
Abstract Sixteen plasmid profile types have been identified in drug-sensitive isolates ofSalmonella berta isolated from humans and human food in England and Wales in the ten-year period 1981–1990. Since 1988 six profile types of epidemiological importance have caused infections in widelyseparated geographical areas and of these, four types have been identified inS. berta isolated from chicken carcasses imported from Denmark. The findings suggest that imported Danish poultry has substantially contributed to a recent upsurge ofS. berta in humans in England and Wales.
