Published 1992Staff ViewISSN: 1089-7550Source: AIP Digital ArchiveTopics: PhysicsNotes: The wavelength shifts of the R1 and R2 fluorescence lines of alexandrite (BeAl2O4:Cr+3) have been experimentally calibrated against the ruby-fluorescence scale as a function of both hydrostatic and nonhydrostatic pressures between 0 and 50 GPa, and simultaneously as a function of temperatures between 290 and 550 K. The results can be expressed in nm as λ(R1)=680.26(±0.01)+8.7×10−3 (±0.3) (T−273)+0.292(±0.003)P +1.3(±0.1)×10−3 P2 and λ(R2)=678.63 (±0.01)+7.8×10−3(±0.2)(T−273)+0.031 (±0.003)P+0.8(±0.1)×10−3 P2, with pressure P in GPa and temperature T in K. Notably, we find that the pressure–temperature cross derivative of the fluorescence wavelength shifts are negligible for both ruby and alexandrite.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

Published 1989Staff ViewISSN: 1089-7690Source: AIP Digital ArchiveTopics: PhysicsChemistry and PharmacologyNotes: The effects of compression on the structure and bonding of Mg(OH)2 brucite and Ca(OH)2 portlandite are documented to pressures of 34 and 24 GPa, respectively, by way of infrared spectroscopy of the O–H stretching vibration at 300 K. The frequency of the infrared-active (A2u) mode of both hydroxides decreases with pressure, by −0.6 cm−1/GPa for Mg(OH)2 over the pressure range studied, and by −3.5 cm−1/GPa for Ca(OH)2 to 10.6 GPa. An additional mode observed in Mg(OH)2 is due to an optically induced hot band (A2u X A2u overtone): with increasing pressure, its intensity grows and its frequency decreases (−3.7 cm−1/GPa). The negative pressure dependencies of these modes (negative Grüneisen parameters) are explained in terms of compression increasing the hydrogen bond strength within the hydroxide structure. On increasing pressure above 12.8 GPa, the full width at half-maximum of the O–H vibration in Ca(OH)2 rapidly broadens by a factor of 4. The infrared data suggest that Ca(OH)2 undergoes pressure-induced amorphization at 11.7(±1.1) GPa at 300 K, consistent with independently collected x-ray diffraction patterns. In the amorphous phase, a distribution of O–O bond lengths ranging between 2.8 and 3.3 A(ring) is inferred from the breadth of the vibrational band. On decompression, the infrared spectra show a full return to the crystalline form at 2.8 (±1.4) GPa. Neither upon amorphization with increasing pressure nor upon recrystallization with decreasing pressure are there any prescursory phenomena evident in the spectra. In contrast with Ca(OH)2, the isomorphous Mg(OH)2 appears to be stable throughout the pressure range of this study.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

ISSN: 1089-7550Source: AIP Digital ArchiveTopics: PhysicsNotes: X-ray diffraction measurements were performed on nanocrystalline iron up to 46 GPa. For nanocrystalline ε-Fe, analysis of lattice parameter data provides a bulk modulus, K, of 179±8 GPa and a pressure derivative of the bulk modulus, K′, of 3.6±0.7, similar to the large-grained control sample. The extrapolated zero-pressure unit cell volume of nanocrystalline ε-Fe is 22.9±0.2 Å3, compared to 22.3±0.2 Å3 for large-grained ε-Fe. No significant grain growth was observed to occur under pressure. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

As high-pressure technology pushes the multimegabar regime, smaller-tipped diamond anvils are being increasingly utilized. Consequently, well-centered holes with diameters smaller than 100 μm need to be routinely produced in these gaskets made of exceedingly hard metals. We describe the construction of an inexpensive electric discharge machine that can drill metals with holes as small as 25 μm in diameter. This method of drilling is easy to use, far less expensive than other commonly used techniques, and has the advantage of being effective on extremely difficult to machine metals such as rhenium.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -
